when the lights are gone

I’m convinced that love finds us, attracted to us as moths to a certain fire, wishes to a star.

Last week was a crazy week. Two ladies in our office lost family members – one a mother, the other a grandmother. And even though the coordination of support isn’t really a part of my job description, I wasn’t surprised that it was a job that found me….. When I hesitated, I was met with a pleading look and the words, ‘but you know what to do’. That wasn’t in reference to the art of ordering flowers or food, but in reference to doing things not out of habit but a deeper understanding of what really matters to most people (regardless of who they are or what it is they think they’ve lost).

I was reminded of how many times over my life I have been asked to pray for someone. Trust me, I don’t have a direct line, but what I say and what I feel are the same. If another hurts, I hurt and so asking for some relief seems easy. When I say, “you never lose love”, it’s not some pat answer for tears. It’s more than what I believe; it’s what I know.

One of my favorite stories about my dad is much the same. He worked at an airbase for most of his life, retiring with more than fifty years in the same little office. He started as a teletype operator right out of the Air Force, and was head of communications when he retired. But he was there during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the base was on the list of potential targets. One day his boss called him in.

“Bob, if something happens, I need you here.”

“I’ll be here.”

“No, you need to promise me.”

“I promise, but you know it doesn’t matter who is here. Tom and Joe are trained the same as I am. Any of us is the same as any other of us.”

“No, Bob, it has to be you.”

My father promised, and as he was leaving, he turned back to look at the Commander.

“Why me? Why do you need me here when you have a full staff of trained technicians?”

“Because if something happens, I want someone here who God will listen to.”

I love that story, but I also love that I’ve come to understand something from many years of listening to my daddy pray. I’ve come to understand that God always listens. The rub is that there are so few people willing to talk. Some strain against the ties of formality and decorum; others against doctrine they know nothing about.

For me, my relationship with God is without limits set by man (or even by words). If I tried to describe it ….well, I’d make it less. I just know that it works. I hum under my breath, and am reminded time (and again) that I am not alone. I am never alone. The heart speaks and I listen. The soul whispers, and I listen.

As far as helping during a time of grief, I know that food speaks louder than flowers, and sometimes the right thing to say is easier than we think. “Tell me about your mama.” Our arms are never filled enough, and the heart that remembers only (ever) to love will find its place……….and those with need to mend will find it as well.

Love. It’s not just something we do.

. . .

what is now
we’ve come to find
endearing as the heart
to swell
as oceans
once a tear began
love returned
the soul to home
another life

proof

a length of thread
worn golden here –
laced and stitched
and braided
as endless as the summers
gone before
were truths
already taken –
lie awake
we come again

backwards into falling
morning dreams

are hastened
by the twilight –
frosted with the dew
a fleeting kiss
where breath forgot to take
our name as taste
to autumn lips –
nights we lingered so
above the place
remembered
to our soul

caught in spells
of once I was –
and begged me not to go
beyond the break
of love
into a word I couldn’t say –
a time we passed
along and still
looking for today
a fortune green
of four leaf kind
stars betrayed our realm

crossed and back
returning
to begin

whereIamknown

twilight
and one more
destiny filled
by the red crimson glow
of a place by the hearth
warmed me the same
as another
I wandered
to forget all I knew
I had known

like the sweet sons
and fathers
of every goodbye
so sure they were gathered
somewhere
lessons for others
lay side by side
asleep now in dreams
of before

delicate chords
to silence lay claim
betrayal of truth written here
as anything less
than a sacred I will
as lips tasting still
every sigh –
every tear

ages to pass
as moments of treasure –
and who will be left
still to know
the way the sun
perched on the edge
of forever
held by a breath
letting go

GeorgiastillEarlier this week, I noted that a dear friend was having a birthday. He turns 91 today, and I’ll call him this afternoon and we’ll fill the space until I’m  home. I look forward to the conversation, and yet am also painfully aware that it might be the last time I talk to him on his birthday. As he gets older (we all get older), it’s a realization I can no longer ignore, and whatever ‘last time’ we shared becomes the last time ever.

There’s something obviously sad about that, and yet I wonder whether we wouldn’t be better off to treat every time as if it were the last.

Years ago, I attended college about an hour down the road from home. I lived on campus, but went home every chance I got. Most weekends, I was back mowing grass or working in the garden. For enough times that I can remember, I’d leave on Sunday afternoon and get twenty miles down the way before turning around. It would suddenly occur to me that I didn’t tell my daddy I loved him, or didn’t hug and kiss my mama. Maybe even then, I felt the pull of that ‘last time’.

Perhaps that’s the real wonder of living in the now – such that every time is the first and every time, the last – such that this (this between time) is all that matters.

Let us spend it lovingly.

the last time that we spoke
leaves were falling down
lines I could have written
to that day
but all I knew (of verses)
was the way you said my name
as sunlight split apart
in pools of grey

the last time that we spoke
was a promise
not to grieve
the taste of tears
a moment here (always)
no one more kiss to hold us
for days (for lives) between
lines I could have written
to that day

the last time that we spoke
of secrets yet unknown
so much I should have said
(I didn’t say)
about the way I miss you
when leaves are falling down
lines I could have written
to that day

Sometimes, in the midst of a crazy day or a crazier week,
I get an email from my brother,  ‘meet you below the falls in five minutes’.
And just like that, I am somewhere else,  breathing in the cold spray from high
above, as laughter echoes off canyon walls.

Even now, I close my eyes and hear the wonderful music
that is bare feet on flat rocks.

From the first man
to hold me –
I learned how to love.
Was patience
taught me to stand.
I’ve seen the whole world
from the throne
of your shoulders –
wrapping my heart (with your heart)
in your hands.

A faith
ne’er regarded
as less than was due –
a purpose for life (for love)
to repay.
A story so rare –
it could never be told
– yet blessed (o so blessed)
by the giving away.

For love
of a woman –
no more than a girl
removed from the path
of goodbyes –
found in your heart
a destiny come
by the way
your hair
fell (like stars)
to your eyes.

Wealth never
counted
by quarters and bills –
is held to the heart
so fragile (so few)
as a life
made to matter
in moments of love –
photographs faded
and worn nearly through.

Was more
than a promise
to love without end –
what was given by grace
to your name.
From seed
grew a garden
of dogwood and briar
– blackberry,
cedar, and thistle
the same.

What worth might
I gather –
no greater than this
is calm for my soul –
(as a shelter
of wings).
There’s nowhere
I’ve found near as sweet –
as riding to dreams
on the arms
of a king.

. . .

It doesn’t take much effort to be a father; but
o, what it takes to be a daddy.  ❤

fallingwishes

of places
they know you –
I so rarely go
for fear
they might mention
your name

and stand around
talking –
while dinner gets cold
lulled by the fusion
of luna to flame

by fate’s
intervention –
the illusion of time
– and clothes I don’t wear
anymore

dreams
are made less
by the way they must sound
when told by another
we knew
from before

when nights
glowed fluorescent
with stardust as dew
a faraway presence –
of light
shining through

will see me in ways
I’ve forgotten to be –
held by a smile
on its way back
to you

tempered now
the pull of hearts
as one into the beating
became of oceans
rivers down below
as moonlight
on forgotten fields
where wild
the blossoms swimming
are held as one
without an eye to see
or soul to sense
their mysteries
much deeper than the seed
a solace of surrender –
where breath becomes
the breeze

When does it end, she wondered.

I hate this wallpaper. I wish I could remember who it was that thought this was a good pattern for me.

(probably your mother or someone else long gone)

It’s a good thing.

She wasn’t going to pee. It was obvious now. She’d tried all the usual tricks: turning on the faucet, focusing, even pressing against that little bowl right at the base of her spine.

It isn’t really a bowl; I’m not sure it has a name.

(does it matter; it isn’t working)

No, but then again, she hadn’t really expected it to. When she tried explaining it to her doctor, he grunted (she was sure) and gave her a look. You know the one – the one that says you’ve convinced yourself of something that isn’t true.

Maybe I should change doctors.

(really)

Yeah, well, that wasn’t going to happen unless he died. But she’d thought several times that it made her uncomfortable for him to know her so well.

(shouldn’t he)

How long had it been?

Almost forty years. How was that possible? And yet, with each visit, she saw the proof in him that she was getting older. She had toyed with the idea of finding someone else, it was never a thought she took seriously.

Who could I trust?

(who do you need to trust; trust with what; the fact that you no longer have hair where you used to and what is there, isn’t the same color)

Still.

Still she didn’t feel quite the weight of years as long as there was someone who knew how she got to ‘here’. She read once of a device that would allow you to carry all of your medical history with you, on a string around your neck. But what about the other history, the stuff that couldn’t be seen with an x-ray or pulled from strands of dna? How did loss look under a microscope? She was proof that some scars couldn’t be seen.

She bit the inside of her mouth, as if somehow the tears would spill forward to her tongue instead of down her face.

. . .

Author’s Note: Why I don’t write novels – she’d never get out of the bathroom.

eternitieshere

I met you
on abandoned roads
where no one goes but friends of mine
are keeping up pretenses
for how it used to be –
swore to never say your name
but when choices came
I called you up
once or twice wondering
how you managed
just to be
the sweetest of a time
forgotten now

I met you
eastbound and northern
on trains that never touched –
but passed within a shimmer
of yellow paper dreams
on rails that sighed in my voice
stretched beneath
and miles beyond
ten thousand giant cedars
wing’ed ones –
remembered us to
song

I met you
on the coming back –
a story for repeating
you said you knew me
when
you knew me how
held as one an august night
as gentle rains
descending –
morning broke
in dust and smoke
its creamy winter skies
