what prayer
was spilled into the night –
a wish upon a star
sufficient
now to bless me
were love –
the way we are
the way life feels
as sure it must
when heaven calls to be
across the waves –
echoes given wing
this heart to heal
my soul to plead
differences i knew
would come to me
one winter
when i had prayed
for you
memories to garner
touch to find me
now
ages to remember love –
arms to reach
around

a life
resurrected
for a moment like this
to find then of dreams
i survived
to remember my place
a smoldering flame
to recall
how your hand
fit with mine
a silence
made sweet
by the essence of voice
were so many things
left unsaid
flirts with my need
deserved of my touch
like a story
made over
one telling too much
i can dream
to remember
how it was just before
my window fell open
my heart
wanting more –
you were come
without wishing
hesitation forgot
to the way the world
curled
in my fingers

had i time
enough
to make the best –
years beyond these rings
a moment undecided
by the way
the nightbird sings
a road too long
to get me back –
a broken stand
of pines
had i days
to resurrect –
one more morning
to ascribe
breath where mine
was stolen
i remember
had i grace
to give in trade –
an evermore
to save
would my pleasure come
in counting
every kiss where
we align
would i wait
another day
to make you
mine

this
a moment more
than twilight turning red
had i listened
as night birds
drew their sighs
had i known
that heaven makes a place
near enough to breathe
to understand
the depths
where love can be
had i traded
every sorrow
when my grief was newly formed
had i bled of tears
a canyon of restraint
had i known before
you would come
to save of me the best
so far from
this beginning
would i wait

last i knew
the creek was gone
weeds to hide the barn
a falling down
as rivers from the sky
miles beyond
remember this
solace of surrender
silence sworn
to distances between
fuel of forgotten
lives
hastened by a truth
someone stole
my heart
and let me live
loved beneath
the jealous eyes
of jupiter and mars
gathered as a moment
almost
but never gone

save me one last time
or let me dream

when pieces
are lost
when the box i once owned
burned last july
how will i know
what of love
i have carried
when robbed of the warmth
of your hand
wrapped in mine
how will i know
love was for keeping
when the light
on my porch
has burned out
how will i see
through the dawn
to remember
it is you
i have ached –
coming home
for me now
