all I really know, dreams, life, love, moments, time, truth

take me back
the way we came –
so I might see the sun
left to live
in stories
dreams
of deepest elm

so I might reach
for heaven –
the memory
of lace
folded into dust
another morning
come

take me back
if you can find
the road that was
remains
pressed against
the mountains –
caverns
without name

take me back
remember me
into the place
where light was born
fashion me a star
above the trees

. . .

could be ~

could be
all i need
is forever to surrender
another dawn
to rise
within your arms

could be
all i need
is a way
for getting over
eternity to wash
ash to snow

could be
all i need
is a sigh beneath
my shiver
breath upon the fire
i made my home

what is it
my love
that keeps you away
moored by the night
to the edge
of the day
sworn your allegiance
to making up dreams
grieving each star
gone astray
while here
on my porch
I sit with the sun
taking my coffee
alone
wondering yet
how it is
you remain
so far
from the place
you belong

breaths between eternities, death, life, love, memorial, memory, moments, soul, story, time

I recently attended a memorial service for my aunt, who has spent the last nine months in some state of ‘coming home’ – from Salt Lake City to Tennessee. It was a wonderful time for sharing stories and memories. And while we might have shared some of them back in March, I found an advantage in the delay – memories and stories unencumbered by the immediate weight of grief.

For me, it meant I could share funny stories without breaking down, speak without a catch in my voice. In response to one story of my uncle’s driving, I noticed at least ten people actually in tears from laughing so hard. My aunt would have loved it!!!!

The minister whispered to me afterward, “I’m growing quite fond of these delayed events.” Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but I believe it’s because they come at a time when memories aren’t part of what breaks us, but rather part of what is saving us. Perhaps it’s another lesson in perspective, viewing truths through a more compassionate eye.

Personally, I think we could use a bit more of that.

when blue
my ashes fall
on meadows far from here
or drift atop a wave
deep and grey
remember me
another time –
as a wind I came
to you
whispers of forever
given you to save

nights I prayed for this ~

and gone, blessings, fleeting, fragile intimacy, life, love, moments, story, time

lest I reach
across the dark
chasing shadows
chasing you
lest I fall
without permission
to be saved
when I speak
of longing scattered
by years
wherein we lay –
might you wonder
of a promised
one more day

lest I sleep
and give our story
to sheets
they never tell
of the ways I came
nights I prayed
for this
lest I dream
and no one notice
what was left behind
of me –
lest my truth be lost
to words
beyond my need

. . .

still to go ~

age, covid, death, fragile days, life beyond our life, moments, reality, seasons, time, truth

what of this
was ever mine –
in living I laid claim
when ages pass
and tears are dried
who will know
my name

how long before
my voice is fade
and every word denied
would that this verse
be written o’er
or washed beneath
the tide

how long have I
a day
a year –
whatever grace allows
to keep what I
am keeping –
names I speak aloud

so many now
the gates are loosed –
tis not for me to know
of dreams beyond
this dreaming –
places still
to go

. . .

for graces to grieve ~

were living
made heavy
by times we let pass
days we forgot
for graces to grieve

were love
but a memory
carved to our soul
a place
we remembered
to be

gathered
to story
the weight of our years
moments deeper
than skin

were longing
the measure by which
we remain
a name
breathed in silence
amen

i’ve danced
with a flame
drank verse from your mouth –
squandering moments
excuses to fate
were it not for the moon
words fell to skin
were it not our forever
to wait

breath, forgotten, life, love, moments, secrets, sharing, silence, skin, trust, truth

in the pause
of grey November –
bluest feathers
ashes fell
into secrets
I remembered not to tell
lest they soar away
pearly blue
wingeds seeking flight
floating into echoes
all can hear
will another sun
be realized
things I whispered there
written to your skin –
upon your soul
will I remember silence traded
when I’ve forgotten
every word –
will love become
the only voice
I know

. . .

silent conversations ~

near the end
he wandered –
could scarce remember me
a vanilla shake
then
he’d start to fall
searching for a memory
within a stranger’s face
a picture of a picture
permanence displaced
tho now and then
those liquid eyes
would speak when words were lost
in silent conversations
we’d say it all –
the best of best
a world made right
love –
and there’d we stay
wrapped within the moment
of ten thousand
sweeter days
I’d whisper
as he fell in love
with a voice he knew by heart
arms that reached
to find him –
with every precious
start

. . .

Author’s Note: In the months before my daddy passed, there would be days when I visited – days when he didn’t know me. Yet, he would allow me there, watching my hands as I touched him, my mouth as I spoke…… I’ve often said that every girl should be allowed at least one moment when their father falls in love with them. ❤ And here, we stay.
