Of all the things we carry with us, home is perhaps the lightest.

Every year or so, I find reason to be in the area where my grandparents lived for most of my life. Each time, my initial response is the same ‘who moved the house closer to the road?’

In my memory, the yard was huge, as was the orchard and the pond. It was surely a day’s walk to my grandpa’s store (rather than the quarter mile it is now). And how could such a little house and little porch hold so many people, so much love?

In the confines of my heart, the roof pushes against my breastbone and apples fall to the safety of little hands.

We may move, and we may know the feel of many floors beneath our naked feet……..but always, there is something greater we carry with us. We may wander, but we never really leave.

*sigh*

there’s no sign
to point the way
no wear upon the road
but I’d swear
the air is cleaner
in this place

beyond the want
for getting back –
someone waits me now
denied the fault
for leaving –
opened arms of grace

it’s been awhile
these days between
the first kiss
and the last –
years have rolled
as thunder
through my bones
reminders of the summers
we laughed
until we cried
knee deep in the river
that was life

memories

as the essence
of remember
floating golden thru the trees –
fingers reach beyond
the midday sun
fumbling with moments
love forgot to say –
sunlight swirls
in feeling just begun

silence wraps
the weary heart –
promise wears us down
with memory of places
yet to be
quiet proves a slow refrain
of stories never told –
verses fall
into the years
between

musings o’er the reasons
and wondering
the pause –
what of life and where
the leaves are blown
swept on dreams repented
by the way we hold the words
bittersweet –
the flight of love
unknown

light on clouds

do you remember
Sundays –
how sunlight
filled the covers
how warm
the breath of coffee
brewing whispers
to the soul
a lifetime gathered
sweetly
to the fold

do you remember
how it wasn’t
the same as any other –
waffles left
for later in the day
do you remember
making story
from a moment
we were touching
words –
becoming places
we will
stay

saved me

what mirror mine
as daylight breaks
with pencils
once I wrote the sky
forgiving of a moment
I was lost
I was freed –
of ink I never thought
to care
assurance never mine
a stronger hand
than e’er
I thought to lead

pages
lined with story
let them change
as I have changed –
retelling of the past
another me
somewhere
this remembrance
though not for fate
to let
papers split the light
as falling
leaves

. . .

I am forever grateful that my life be told with pencil rather than pen, with moments still undecided by the stars.

rivers
remember
their way to the sea
swallows by memory
come home
across each beginning
to a time
without name –
how sweet each surrender
to places unknown

backward and onward
upward
set free –
ten thousand lives
to recall
mercy is taken
when all else is lost –
grace in desire
to fall

the edge of forever
but a journey began –
willing our way
to return
stars without memory
of a wish
spoke aloud –
long before night
thought to burn

beyond the fear
of knowing
a knowledge greater still
than all the books
remembered
in their prime

beyond the grace
of letting be –
the first sweet breath
of life –
a memory returned
of squandered time

sorrow bears
the taking back –
yet grieves for days
between
when all we loved
remains as tears
divine

what measure this –
the meeting
of ancient light to soul
in stories
tell me once again –
before my bones grow cold

brittle
as beginning they
warmed within your arms
gather me
tether me –
against the sweet foretelling
of alarm

where name becomes
a memory –
some other life begins
beyond this golden sunset
I exist –
remember how I loved
how I’ll miss

the making of each moment
within the nights to come

let me go
how far and still –
already
I’ll be home

trustme

I won’t wait
the evening brush
of clarinet to fiddle –
I won’t deny your leaving
for some other
grace undone

they say
for one
another waits
beyond the rest –
a sweeter sun

yet I have yet to understand
how deep the burn ignites

through it all
a whispered sigh
was a secret passed in dying
dare I wait the coming back –
for the sweet embrace
of light

here –
and I
some other day
will recall the truth
this life betrayed
ten thousand loves –
as trade for one

ten thousand breaths
in flight

breath (2)

I asked you once to come –
when winter was melted
as petals pushed forward
to remember
the home
I described for you
in the silver convergence
of dreams

I asked you come
to stay beyond
leaving
one more time
to hold me together
through another
letting go

I asked you to come
but now –
recalling
has lessened the reasons
for wanting you here
when spring
is returning
– and the winter
so fond in remembrance
has left me
to go

where once I begged you
to come
