had i vision then
to comprehend
the magic
you would bring
how sweet the peace
perfected by your smile
had i known
you would be everything
every sunrise
every mile
would make for me
another life
beyond this one –
beyond the fate
i traded
long ago
had i known of you
known of us –
another spring to keep
stories yet unfolding
dreams beyond
my sleep

once before
like this
it was
we waited near to dark
lifting up our prayers
my soul to keep
near it was
to almost
came the sun
one more amen
bruised to find the lesson
of our knees
forgiven to surrender
sure to lay me down
in shadows
where the cross
was just a tree
a canopy of sparrows
bursting full with blooms
rings beneath
the branches
a blessing to receive
heaven sent to find us
graces without end
love became the answer
to our pleas

a redbud weeps
beside the fence –
and i can’t help but wonder
where your feet are planted
all your heart obeys
are there woods
you still remember
paths from yesterday –
how many roads
i scarce can count
brought me back your way
a maple climbs
and all her limbs
are bent to touch the sky
in every turn
i feel the ache for you
lives forgotten
how it was i came
to understand
what this is –
and where my love
is true
a purple vine
plays beneath an ancient
stand of pines
murmurs of
i love you
fill the trees
sometimes i rediscover
all the places you remain –
as near my breath
becoming –
cradled
by the breeze

how sure this fate
awaited –
from nights
i grieved your touch
would morning come
and i not know
to ache
would e’er my thoughts
be settled –
in cursive blocks
of blue
a book resolved
to wishing –
for a love i never knew
would feel this way
as everything
pressed against my page
a story still becoming –
what was dreamed
of yesterday

despite my
resolution
to keep you arms away
a distant sun –
i couldn’t reach by car
a voice
almost for certain
not quite faded
still i grieve
the sound of your hello –
it doesn’t matter
where you are
i’m tortured
by the notion
you would let me go
this way –
you don’t speak my name
don’t feel the same
some days
despite my sore confession
i don’t love you –
still i do
tis not for me to ever
understand
how it is my heart
remembers
everything
i never said
destiny
i dare not lay to rest
everything you are
to love –
is all i am

to make it over
time to do again
what was left
undone
left unsaid
traded for another
life we might have lived
days we might have
passed
sweeter the temptation
to get it right
would earn our trust
take our nights
had we time
again (remember) –
to learn
the way to love
differently somehow
a place of rest
beyond whatever time
and breath
allow

your story –
will to understand
the ways you came
ten thousand lives
to find
missing you
was all i knew
the map that bears your soul –
destinies rewritten
to get me back
this time

save me this
these places –
uncertain where to start
fates converged
to stretch
beyond the blue
save for me
this evermore
as promised yet to none
the stars beyond –
another jealous
moon
