were there words
i didn’t know
at rest beneath my bed
left to die
another
some fine day
verses i allowed
to be gathered like a curse
can’t feel them here
can’t know of them
lest they came
to stay
i didn’t know
i didn’t know
to bear the crush
of seasons –
leaves in crimson shades
yellow beams
of flight
let me feel
let me see
of things i never knew
words i never
thought
would let me be
. . .

i have waited
with nothing of story
to wait
no pages left barren
i knew yet to write
how was it to know
how much
should i care
when the years
have gathered
black to the lines
crossing the porch
some nights
as i prayed
another would come
sunlight would break
out on the pasture
i loved
as i love
prayed for a moment
to know
as i know
i could be
as i am
everything
. . .
23 Thursday Feb 2023
were there a means
for understanding
some longing
to discern
a place for every hurt
i leave behind –
breath becoming more
than just the memory
of words
a moment you were falling
into my
eternal rhyme
and i remember
what it took to find
you here –
to get you home
tethered to a promise
whispered
soft against the night –
reminders
of the only thing i know
to resurrect
love to get us back
where we
belong
. . .

i want for nothing
much more than this
the way the light
falls all around
as silence sits back
undecided by death
and cold as the day
it surrendered
this heart
i wait
undisturbed
by the fear of goodbye
boards shifting
somewhere outside
i wait with the dishes
i thought not to move
a cigarette
touched out of habit
one night
i want for nothing
but your hand caught with mine
the curve of my name
on your lips
the rush of your breathing
tangled
divine
the way the light falls
all around
. . .

gifted words
a solace immortal –
was a stranger’s voice
the heart of one I know
when lives are lived
indifference
spawns a world of second starts
wherever i am born
was in your arms
i died before
some other time
as longing spent
i promised to return
a whisper buried deep
beneath the bone
let me be
forgiven –
i never meant to go
allowing for a moment
not yet claimed –
words become
a memory –
love I’ve yet to squander
a heart that holds
directions home
my promised
evermore
. . .

had i wishes
yet to squander
graces
mine to give
smiles without a reason
to concede
kisses left for ransom
give and give some more
half the cost of letting go
was every sigh
between
the place we fell
fate for trade
when nothing more was come
grief to stain my pillow
dig the hole
fill my heart with daggers
words i wanted back
to ease the hunger
building
in my soul

all i want
of heaven
is the memory
of spring –
nights somewhere
we lay amid the stars
tracing lives
giving name
wherever flame
was found –
whispering our secrets
every promise
breathed
aloud
all i want
of evermore –
is a place to rest
my pen
fields of ancient flowers
fireflies
a story undecided
words no one has heard
moments we surrendered –
floating
far beyond
the night
. . .

another day –
a current slower
than the years
have washed away
I used to wade
from here to heaven
seeking signs –
a cause to stay
for a lifetime
I was patient
pulling starlight
from my hair
came a night
you sought to dream
and found me there
a slower breath
uneven whispers
floating soft above
the foam
you were my
one consolation
when there was
nothing more
to know
