all I really know, closer, destiny, life, love, remembrance, time, touch, truth

softly

near
this breath
as near enough –
yet closer I will plead
for moments
yet to span
eternity

near
as touch
not near enough –
forever this the same
ten thousand lives
to wonder why
we came

near
as love –
I have no choice
what choice is destiny
nearer – not yet
near enough
for me

. . .

til when ~

yesterhere

dare we worry
the darkness coming
– or tears
we’re bound to leave
a sorrow not yet given –
tis a blessing
I believe

a barter made
for living –
will grieve our losses
soon enough

with silence
meant for breaking –
were not for love

let us take our fill
of passion
and toast the days
til when –
we meet beyond the taking
in the place
where love began

. . .

became the light ~

sigh

across a strand
of gypsy sky –
back the way to wander
silver specs
remembered just one star
and distant nights
of ancient faith
men and cattle lowing
wondered at the light
became the light

miles and miles
within the truth
to find a baby waiting
forgiven not the witness
of a king
lowly as the meek would lay
held as love to promise
one day more than ever would
reasons to betray

a savior born
one winter morn
the first of all worth waiting
was innocence prepared
our hearts to see
one was come
the rest to know
the worst to pay for dying

silver spec
to glisten there
first gift of love
bestowed

. . .

Author’s Note: Now and then, things happen when
we least expect them – a four-leaf clover nestled with another one,
the trust of a hand wrapped with ours, love returning us to a home we
never left.  Sometimes, little miracles become words.

Sometimes, it’s as easy as a light through a morning fog.

Who cares that it’s not quite Christmas…

catcher

what truth is mine
I’ve wondered
a time or two
no less
memorizing lines
from another place in time
where I was mortified
of loving
held in place
by life
staring out the window
as the world slipped by –
gathered into keeping
for another
bye and bye

. . .

once to come ~

breath (2)

I asked you once to come –
when winter was melted
as petals pushed forward
to remember
the home
I described for you
in the silver convergence
of dreams

I asked you come
to stay beyond
leaving
one more time
to hold me together
through another
letting go

I asked you to come
but now –
recalling
has lessened the reasons
for wanting you here
when spring
is returning
– and the winter
so fond in remembrance
has left me
to go

where once I begged you
to come

could it be

in the still
before counting –
the breeze
once a sigh
ashes
leaves
falling down
did we find
our redemption –
a silent retreat
once remembered
can ne’er be
unknown
from a moment
of light
is a flickered
permission –
sparks unto flame
unto stars
lighting the darkness
filling our night
was the place
we were found –
to begin

. . .

verse erased ~

beyondmenow

will I remember you
as sunlight –
swept atop the waves
as tears
my heart neglected –
were never yours to save
will I barter still
this shallow breath
for pages old and faded now –
for one more line
another grace allowed
a place to be
by verse erased
as lifetimes spread to days between
our last goodbye
as fate returned –
the dreamer
from the dream

story of the soul

there’s a sound
that sorrow makes
in still dark rooms –
a void
beyond the burden
an anguished understanding
would you know
for whom I grieve
daffodils I planted
yesterday

on paths of stone
hearts are rent
life recalls its meaning
with circumspect
reminders
was this the way
we came
searching out our others –
the truth
we gave away

. . .

worth worrying about ~

country lifeIt was a long weekend. Or, should I say it was a long Sunday. Due to some changes with our healthcare provider, we had a large group of individuals who were reflected as being terminated when they weren’t. To be honest, I am still in shock at the number of individuals who apparently visit the pharmacy every weekend.

But I also took my baby sister to the ER with anxiety, breathing, dizziness symptoms. I’m sure it’s not unusual to spend two hours just waiting in the ER, but eventually she was seen and sent home. We still aren’t sure what was wrong, and we may never know. It can be chalked up to ‘just one of those things’ or even a fine blend of Zyrtec, Flonase and mid-age weariness.

Regardless, Monday morning was busy before I left home with checking in, giving updates and juggling emails. I was so very grateful that I draw a line when it comes to driving and refuse to answer emails when stopped at traffic lights.

Instead, it was filled with reflection and introspection – about what I’m doing and what I’m not (or not doing enough).

I thought of how much I would prefer (even at this later time in my life) the things I rejected earlier in my life. I was filled with longing – for the little town with the bigger heart, people who I knew the same as my own hand, worry for the few things worth worrying about. I contemplated what it would be like to work at the hometown grocery store, or restocking cards at the only card shop in town. I fantasized about evening bond fires and weekend card games; fishing lines and flannel shirts; feather beds and catfish fries; weekends at the lake; pancake breakfasts and quilting circles.

I imagined a breadth of friends that would know everything about me, and love me (still). Friends who share their best recipes and spare bedrooms; who know the real difference between listening and hearing; friends eager to spend a Saturday morning picking blackberries, shopping at the nearest second-hand store, laughing as we gobble down a second serving of french toast, or crying over a movie we’ve seen twenty times.

Late nights with no make-up; mornings with no schedule to keep.

There’s another life out there; one with a smaller price tag. Sure – I won’t make as much, but it will cost me less – less of what matters; less of my years; less of whatever time I have left to spend.

I may be a long way from that leap, but I’m much closer to realizing there is one to be made – and of a life that surely exists beyond the fall.

in spite of time
my aching rests
with want for one last summer
one late July
you wanted me
I lived beyond the fire
dancing
when the party ended
backward to your arms
forward into all
the grace
you are

. . .

follow your soul

time has erased the
girl in the mirror –
a clarified version
of someone I knew
stares from the corners
leans to the shutter
breaks in the passing
and smiles as I do

at stories forgotten
retold from the ending
tracing old patterns
nobody cares
how we became
for what were we searching –
a touch this familiar
waiting love –
waiting there

miles down the mountain
living aside –
essence remains of
some sweet other time
a faded reminder
of me in the mirror
but for passions
we shared –
love
would be mine
