undenied

dreams melt easy
into places of home
a box in the attic
of truths
holding still
as little green stamps
held to a page
would buy us the heavens
– a treasure of will

feathering
shadows to dance
up above
the ceiling takes life
of her own
ushering thought
into meaning returned
wrapped in a blanket
of old

strange
our repentance
our surrender to more
than a dollar made do
with the coming
to whole
to see without seeing
to know
all we keep
where value is kept
in the attic
of soul

nowandthen

forget
of then
remembered when
we might have known some other
ways to go
the long way
leading here
distances becoming
the memory of more
trace to trees
dirty feet
and graces
holding near

the weary one
I’ve known a few
and more
I could not name
are sleeping
with the angels
yet tonight
safe beyond the reach
of words –
wooly warms
and warriors
listen now their prayer
for fearless flight

ages past
as nowhere else
they know
of ways I’ve come
and how the ache
has kept a page
within
salted by my sorrows
lifted high
my bliss
remembered me
of all I willed

birthdaymorning

daybreak makes
for tangled verse
last night’s
let’s remember
the lay of light
against the night
– a slow and sweet
surrender

as breath
into the winter stilled
poems press another
of long ago –
we willed a place
in time
letters wrapped in ribbon
hide beneath the bed
– verses sweat
to martyr every line

from all that was
to garner this
– sorrows held apart
someone wrote
their name into the fold
the memory
of breaking
fences
fears
and heart
silent hallelujahs fill
the soul

calm me down
with whispers –
stories of the road
times you called my name
I heard you clear
above the dreams
of might have been
and where you’ll rest
tonight –
as I with plans
one day
to hold you near

silence stales
the cigarette
lipstick coffee cup
clean the break
of one more living shared
long before the sunset
knew to save
her paints –
your fingerprints
were glowing everywhere

dream the stars
from going
with questioning just so
a universe
where love is felt
the same
as sleep along the highway
counting back the miles
– stirred awake
by whispers
of your name

started here

it was a time
reserved for wishing
– the fields were flush
with grain
when a boy
of almost nothing
stood his ground

he dreamed in shades
of fourteen years
a girl behind the glass
found him
as he found her
leaning in

offered up a place to go –
 folded worlds of wonder
took no mind
to what they’d find
tears and joy
and laughter

sailing out
beyond the window pane

three months
down a dusty road
he found the nerve
for asking
far more than this
more than lives could bear
took her for a midnight ride
down across the border
trading rings
and counting stars
between

another then
and moments past
without the need
for telling
what was left
and all a heart might hold
rockabye
and baby –
let the buntin stay
for all we know
was this
our chosen way

now again
the road becomes
a path someone forgot
leaves are falling
scarlet
round my bed
reminders sit in flannel
sheets of gabardine
where he was
she fills
the time between

Author’s Note: In September 1955, a man and a woman shared
their first kiss. He was 23 and she only 14. Three months later,
they married, and two months after that, he was discharged from the Air Force.
Seven days later, he started a job he would work for 52 years. Nine
months after that seven days, I was born. Still they yearn for
one more kiss, and I am blessed on this day – when they celebrate the
start of so very much love.

Story is everything.

she spins
in sleeves
of flannel
worried not for word
counts the stars
becauseby name
(gives them
hers)

cursing not
the seeker
nor winds
to take him far
beyond the light
(still
within her arms)

♥♥

in sweet
she pulls
at shadows
and wanders then
to dream
of wishes made
(and where
their burning rests)

in choice
denied the choosing
fortunes yet
untold
for love beyond
her knowing
(gratefulness)

rememberedmehome

I’ve heard
them tell
of summer storms
beyond the reach
of winters –
of places where the spring
has gone to stay
wrapped around
a bitter bark –
falling into sorrow
a time to keep
of lifetimes
yesterday

held us here
with promise –
with want for one last time
a life reserved
if ever fate allowed
given will to gather
lest we choose
another way –
beholding not to
consequence
somehow

changing
as were seasons
passing us to years –
golden crowns
with ribbons furling grey
wherein our faith
is measured –
a truth
we carry still
of times we lived
for this –
another day

tearsarefalling
might I help you
to remember –
of moments (all but gone)
how sweet the rain
(of words)
against the moon

of graces given
heart and soul –
(and when will you
return)
to chase the chill
another rhyme to bloom

as whispers
pass unspoken
the same
(most every time)
a promise scattered far
on ancient wings

willing us to wonder
did you know
(how could you know)
of birds
the same as night
ten thousand sing

their way across
a paper sky –
(once you told me why)
tho everything
(my everything)
has changed

deeper now –
the places kept
are tempered
into bone –
with all I know –
(familiar
falls) the rain

nearenough

what worlds
 we wandered years away
with nothing come
between
a star removed
of moments here –
as ancient ones
 to dream

of lives forgotten
plans undone –
by wishes laid aside
for destines
of fear –
a truth denied

what souls
await already –
with knowledge
of our will
they call us out –
and listen for us
still

on frigid nights
the air is charged
with stories from afar
a promise
of returning –
where we are

choosing yet
some other time –
another way we came
to know
before our knowing –
ten thousand
stars
by name

mindful I
of places
you’ve remembered me
before
and times you can’t recall
you knew my face
within the crowd
beneath the lights
floating in the dark
– another love
with lifetimes
to retrace

the truth
from lines
already made
into your weathered brow
crissed and crossed
a map
along your hand
pardon my intrusion
into futures unforseen
– destines beyond
the one you planned

stars have watched
a many year
in want for just one kiss
dreaming spent
for reasons still unknown
eternities are painted
to places
you can’t see –
and here I am
reminding you of home
