lestIforget

the soul does rise
a golden tide –
with words
and hymns
forsaken
to touch again
the last amen –
revealed by time
repentant

might then you know
how I loved you so
tho never left
uncertain
how deep the night
distilled in light –
how long the wait
for morning

. . .

with ease ~

quite

how it was

I don’t recall the way
so weary –
or the sunset
quite this bright –
curtains drawn
to keep the world at bay

as ever still
tis loved and well –
as I am sure one truth remains
to satisfy this longing
within my heart’s
refrain

what of years
lay stretched behind
dusted now –
forgotten when
will come a dream awakened
o, what will matter then

acceptance, forgiveness, here am I send me, homeless, journey, life, love, moments, path, sharing, soul, spirit, story, truth, what matters most

Most every day, he is there.

Sonny stands on the exit ramp with his dog (Miss Peabody), dependent on hearts that often can’t see him, eyes that rarely meet his.

He has become my friend. I speak to him anytime I’m on the ramp. Sometimes I offer him a bottle of water, a newspaper, a sausage biscuit (for Miss Peabody), or some spare change. I enjoy talking with him, and he has told me more than once how much I mean to him. Miss Peabody rests her head on my window while we talk, likely grateful for a few moments of air conditioning.

sonny

A week ago last Friday, as I pulled away and into traffic, I realized that I had not mentioned my plans to be on vacation the following week. When I traveled the same road that afternoon, I looked for him but he wasn’t around.

The week passed, and yesterday morning, as I approached the top of the ramp, I saw him. I had never seen him in such a state. He was sitting on the guardrail rather than standing, holding Miss Peabody at his side as he looked toward the ground. He didn’t even look up, and just as I stopped, the light changed.

I rolled down the window and hollered, ‘wake up, Sonny’.

His head jerked and he was immediately on his feet waving his arm, all the while juggling Miss Peabody and laughing…

I haven’t talked to him since returning. This morning, someone else had reached the ramp ahead of him and taken his ‘spot’. Regardless, I expect I will see him soon.

We can never know the impact we have on another’s life, or how the size of our own heart can alter the size of another’s. I only know that Sonny blesses my life…..and I think I bless his.

How easy to forget that we belong to one another. Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.

let me know
when you are going
tell my heart
that it be spared
from the ache
that finds you missing
left to mourn
for moments shared
I will grieve
until you find me
carried by your presence home
to a place
that is our passing
lest we ever
walk alone

home

morning waits
to fill the ache –
where once I held your heart
shadows cleft between
the dusk and day
reminders of my sorrow –
threads I’ve pulled apart
memories
to keep my dreams
awake

verses tend
my longing –
as curses rise to fall
photographs of photographs
a promise yet unmade
what heaven
has forgotten us
moments spent this way –
near enough to witness
the loss
of yesterday

. . .

unnumbered ~

had I known
from the start
what the stars had in mind
might have bound
up my heart early on
perceived as transgression
forgiven as such
unnamed to the darkness
just before dawn
where poetry stands
as proof of our days
was here that we first learned to love
had my soul been aware
of another somewhere
pages unnumbered
and bare
carbon impressions
of weakness and light –
fragile remembrance
of sight

story of the soul

there’s a sound
that sorrow makes
in still dark rooms –
a void
beyond the burden
an anguished understanding
would you know
for whom I grieve
daffodils I planted
yesterday

on paths of stone
hearts are rent
life recalls its meaning
with circumspect
reminders
was this the way
we came
searching out our others –
the truth
we gave away

. . .

released ~

prayer

how gracious this
my morning prayer
keeps me here too long
filled with names
from seasons past –
or yesterday
the same as new
forgive
and grant me courage
forgive
and grant me peace
forgive
that I might learning
do the same
for all I’ve known
to love again
and all I’ve not
released

swept

Kentucky made a place for me
with nothing but a sigh
opened doors
and arms to wrap around
I can’t explain
I won’t pretend
there’s more to this
than choosing
more to bluer pastures –
sunsets all day long

was ne’er your plan
a way to make –
one day to come along
whistling as evening fell
carrying your song
what of then
my hand in yours –
calling stars by name
some distance from the mountains
yet near enough for rain

Kentucky wears a golden ring –
keeps my secrets well
I close my eyes sometimes
and hear the carousel
spinning top of wishes made
swirling down the night –
while not so far away
I waltz
in place

setmefree

sometimes now
I disappear
and wake beyond the wanting
beyond the urge
to scatter
all I’ve known

to leave behind
without a note –
passion unrelenting
to slip beneath
the shutter to the door

how many
I have wondered
righteous dreams I spared
the moon to pull –
I sleep
and find you there

. . .

a moment spared ~

hopesanddreams

i’ve made my peace
with living
deciding what to keep
tis love i count
around and ’round
when falling off to sleep

i can’t abide
a moment spared
lest it be divine
i won’t be bent the burden
of truth
that isn’t mine

the day may dawn
tho i don’t see how
for sorrow and regret
let ne’er my tender heart reside
in pain
i’d best forget

what memories
would hurt invade
o’er those most surely blessed
– would cast a shadow
o’er my days
and curse my soul
at rest
