the truth of love’s returning ~

whathavewebecome

you spoke
at length
of choices made
and more to come
with winter’s breath –

of storms
and some dark night
beyond the gale

but I didn’t fear
for what might be –
for days between
and endless

for dreams beyond
the reach of memory

you spoke of tears
and I of mercy
one for one
and all assured
we’d find our way
where there was none

but the truth
of love’s returning

I’m not the one
who waited –
while you were lost at sea
the one who stood
atop the moor
and grieved each day
for thee

I’m not the one
who cursed your touch –
who begged the spirits rise
to bar your soul
the leaving
across a jealous sky

I’m not the one
who wore your name –
or bore your children’s pain
the one who whispered
lullabies –
with tears for each refrain

I’m not the one
for losing sleep –
resigned a life of letting go
I’m not the one
forgetting –
how I lived
and loved you so

life beyond the leaving ~

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

how is it
I’ve grown weary
of the way you sip your tea –
the way you smile so unaware
of grief
that anchors me

every day –
in ten thousand ways
tho I cannot tell you why
the nights grow cold –
and I remiss
at telling you goodbye

as it was
before – as cannot be
your hand a comfort then
your voice – a whisper pining
a soulful welcome in

I wonder if you notice
or do you wonder as I do
of life beyond
the leaving –
a barter carried through

has it been years
or more to count
this distance now I feel
words without the strength to speak –
a hurt that will not heal

. . .

Author’s Note: Before you get concerned for me, I feel the need to explain. This isn’t about me, but rather the result of a conversation with a dear friend – one who has stayed beyond the leaving.

a lily’s portion ~

homeIcome

would e’er I spring
from ashes
another dream to chase –
beyond the veil
where sleeping hearts
embrace

some other world
of mystery
recalls what once was lost
a sweeter kiss
than I could keep –
no matter now
the cost

for grief –
a lily’s portion
shall forgive
what I have done
erasing all I understood
was but for one
I come

a witness
though immortal –
as silence from a sigh
bound to this remembering
– as was fated
so am I

the answer of love ~

gracethismuch

conceded to grace
when nothing made sense
but to journey alone
in the dark

what can you do
when the road turns to dust
and all you believe
is erased
from your view

by the sun sinking now
the burn of the past
as burdens worn low on your back –
is a light to the way
ever too much
to ask

you’ve wondered aloud
uncertain of all
but your unworthy place
in the answer
of love

when dawns
an eternity
you never deserved
a balm to your troubles
a place to lie down

none shall keep me ~

follow

of sorrows
none shall keep me long
or barter me
a choice
a way beneath the branches
weaved of briar
lost beneath
the grieving moon
seeking us
sometimes
pulled beyond
the edges
of a memory forgot
spurns the fading twilight
of every
might have been
names are chiseled deeply
to my soul
where once a secret shared
lights are falling
round
by love
a faint reminder –
of another
great unknown

the beginning of time ~

let me love you
while I can –
while my hands
can decipher
the map of your soul
the breadth
of your journey
merging with mine
for a moment
untested –
the beginning
of time

let me love you
while I can –
while these bones
can remember
the fusion of wills
fingers weaving
with fingers
toes to curl
forgive me this –
the beginning of all
I’d forgotten
to miss

all that is certain ~

holythis

it seems a day
or maybe more –
since the aching
of darkness
remembered to light
since the morning
came softly
in search of a reason
a place to keep memories –
a broken down gate
sits at the parting
where all is forgotten
but the sweet velvet brush
of heaven on skin
a whispering promise
of silent surrender –
of all that is certain
given whole
to the night

breath

do I need a reminder
of places I’ve wandered
above a blue canyon or a babbling stream
would I barter permission
though fated in passing
to remind me of wonder
the color of dreams

what good would it do me
to garner a ticket
for a ship left from port
such a long time ago
to sail on a journey
beyond every sunset
to touch on the memory
of pleasures I’ve known

were once souvenirs
beholding to treasure
of moments twice breathed
into life – into truth
would I be any richer
with a picture of heaven
than the memory of wings
beating soft on the roof

the book of my seasons
sits low on the mantle
pressed by my soul
into beauty I’ve touched
near as a lifetime –
the echo of always
knows no remembrance
would compare then to love
