hearme

burdens sweat
an autumn night
beyond the shift
were time
erased
forgotten now
the way it felt
to soar
the sticky wet
of birthing
was willing us
to die
somewhere lost –
far above the day
we floated
on a whisper
wrapped in ancient feathers
remembering
a time we dared
to fly

Camera360_2016_8_21_043908

was there
once before
a story unencumbered
a part became of all I know
becoming not the end
of two or more
ten thousand miles
of houses barely standing
weathered paint
and not much more to keep
than hands
together knitted
round a time
was almost lost
where now
the news of leaving
fills the town
with worry for the breaking
and hearts to split apart
nights beyond
the eager reach of sleep
stars were lined
along the sil….
tucked beneath the lace
dreaming not the same
as of you now –
blue the smoke of cedar
rolling down the hill
from places known for stone
and daffodil
remembered
would it matter
just how simple
we were then –
when given words
but chosen yet to kiss
before the day a shimmer
of breath
above the still
– a life recalled
could never end
that way

Author’s Note – A week ago this Sunday, my mother and I took a drive into the ‘old country’, along rivers where once we swam and roads not the same.  We visited the cemetery where so many of my ancestors rest – between a pasture, a (cold cold) river and a valley.  This house stands not far away, near another cemetery.  My mother told me of the people who once lived beneath these aching timbers, when this was majestic place, filled with stories only started and rest far away.

onceuponame

before the night
is scattered
by the first embrace of dawn
for moments then
I float in half awake
with thought to more
than earthly care
visions passed between
– nothing
I’m prepared
to give away

(if evermore)
a moment come
and always at my will
no ordinary feeling
wraps me sweet
within the still

embraced by this
surrender
more than breath –
or hands to hold
love that has no measure
brings a solace
to my soul

sun that begs
these buds to tremble
my sleepy eyes to sight
awakened by a
promise –
writ in messages
of light

lest I wander
past the leaving
and will my spirit
home –
to the heart
that keeps my pillow –
the kiss that is
my own

remembermeback

cooler now
the eastern wind
has come to blow me home –
with memory of forever
I was born

returning
as the falling snow
sticking to the branches –
winter white remembered me
from where I laid to rest

another time –
a sweeter soul
no different for the dying
let me sleep
and seal these words within

the place I was
committed as a softer glow
of setting –
dream me there
of circumstance
and bring my winds
to sing

as breath
was I ever much more
than a wish
given a star
when the sky
fell away
a memory formed
by the coming
back round
to begin
were we then
just beginning again
a soul recalled
to a moment divine
a flicker of flame
made light
out of this –
heaven we swore
to remember

returning

_ Middle Prong River and Dogwoods Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee ___

from birth –
the river
was bound to the trees
rocked neath their
branches
each night
sharing the story
tell me again
of weaving together
as stars into light
pattern reflected
in slivers of green
chasing a path
of song to the sea
warmed by the rocks
and swept by the tides
versing the winds
of shared destiny
of a night not so distant
– dreams just the same
as the taste
of forever –
tears without name

measures

dare me not
these tears to carry
when all about are seas
ancient sands
to fill my worry
– bring me
to my knees
with gratitude
for love and losing
grief a many night
I’ve born –
the truth is more
than grace returning
a light
recalled –
to soothe the morn

solace sleeps
in sheets of light
beyond the reach
of pain
stronger now
the heart
that once was broke
mended by forgiveness
longing undenied
holds the same
eternal flame aloft
giving breath
to shadows
name to evermore
dawn to chase
the memory of night

shine

silver snare
of aged boughs
dust beneath the day
an almost mute
reminder
of another
I can’t say

where and why
it made me blush
for reasons –
none so sweet
as moments
begged my
swollen heart
retreat

to the safety
of forgetting
how it felt
do you recall –
were there stars
and did we grieve
their silent
fall

from grace
were wishes whispered
without fear
for something less
would change
this fragile life
into one
of thankfulness

this prayer
to joys counted
some but once
tho some by name
a light
beyond the searching
where for love
the light became

a golden heat
beneath the snow
where tender
sleeps
the crimson dawn

bucket list ~

blush

The exercise seemed cathartic, meant to pull something far deeper than dreams from the participants. Create a bucket list. Easy enough I suppose, although not as easy as it might be to those with less distance left of the road.

But there was nothing I could think of, nothing worthy of such a contract with the universe. Surely, in putting words to paper, there becomes an invisible thread (a map) connecting now to the future, this to another.

There was nothing I needed to do.

Subsequent discussions debated the matter – a half empty bucket or a bucket half full.

Mine, admittedly, is a bucket overflowing – not big enough to hold what I already have, what I have already known. Even of my sorrows, I would not sacrifice a one for the preceding joy, negating a moment of anguish, loss or indecision.

It is the nothing (everything) variable of love. To love; to be loved. What else could there be? If I climbed Everest, what value those words on stone? Would that be the thing for which I would linger? A memory of sorts that speaks more to my endurance than to my endearing.

Nothing.

Nothing more than to love – to be loved. To empty the bucket time and again until there is no time….

Leaving behind only a bucket never (ever) quite emptied.
