I’ve heard
them tell
of summer storms
beyond the reach
of winters –
of places where the spring
has gone to stay
wrapped around
a bitter bark –
falling into sorrow
a time to keep
of lifetimes
yesterday

held us here
with promise –
with want for one last time
a life reserved
if ever fate allowed
given will to gather
lest we choose
another way –
beholding not to
consequence
somehow

changing
as were seasons
passing us to years –
golden crowns
with ribbons furling grey
wherein our faith
is measured –
a truth
we carry still
of times we lived
for this –
another day

instrumental

the rain has come
atlantis
where are you gone
what legions knew
yet turned
your will away
separated
now again –
by miles
and men and more
yet still when nights
are cold –
I hear you pray

wherein the sin
you might have been
kept your lies
beneath
covers even now
the longer bed
an orchestrated
guillotine
sanctified by fire
broken hearts
around your skirt
are spread

o tell me
once again as I
this restlessness betray
to know the truth
was ever yours
to tell
ashes float
a solemn rift
voices rise beyond
spirits speak
of sorrows –
weaved into the veil

stories

TO THE DESCENDANTS
OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN TRIBES
by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
(with permission)

If you would look into the last room
of the starry night,
there are powers there with names:
Tannenbow, Valdar, Yaga, and others.
They are your ancestors,
they sneeze with all the waiting for you.

They want to give you sword-making,
show you hidden ore amongst earth’s gasses.
They, like you, are a dust of glitter and light.
The names, the names. . .
call them by name,
for they have gone shadowy
from lack of your remembering,
from lack of your love.

Your Deep Earth Drum still lives,
though more more faint now.
Down there they have a theater waiting,
one that is lit by storms;
it takes only a name to start it.

Some firesides, the good princes show up;
the blind one who steals earrings
during the night shows up;
the wise one who sings souls into Nod;
the long-chin who concocts sweets,
and herbs for healing,
who lays huts of boughs for grieving,
and extracts her cost.

The one who bleeds gold,
breathes there.
The one who releases the bright,
burning fire arrow, lives there.
They are all there.
Your ancestors live!

Quick! the names,
the names. . .
call them by name. . .
before they lose all water
and die.

~*~

The charge of the storyteller is more than one of weaving,
reciting, entertaining.  It is a remembering of the start and a perception
of no ending.  It is the past brought forward into the now,
where it is made sense by those who have waited to be a part.

There is truth deeper than your bones, where the story
lives.  There, the proof of other dreams is feeding your own.

sweeterstill

were destiny
a way become
of roads we knew before
of souls remembered
just the same –
a stranger
at the door

recalled how warm
 our midday sun
burned above the plain
sworn unto another time
 some comfort
to remain

the same as then
how sweet returned
the captive
from the dream
as words to spread
 a starlit night
unseen

babies
left their crying
another faith to press
backward
to the lover

unconfessed

the need for more
as ache deserved
shall one day reach an end
as sun beyond the setting
we begin

. . .

much older than reason ~

home

garner these truths
these fragile provisions
of where
(and I was)
but a sail on the sky
tethered by something
much older
than reason
waters set free
are pulling me nigh

across
to remember
another time (passing)
fitted my breast
the darkest of quills
thicker than moss
these graces of sorrow
soars as I know
I have
(and I will)

store to my being
one more returning –
as flashes
where scars used to be
bury my home
deep (for my finding)
skies once I wandered
my way
back to thee

. . .

stilltheyknow

scatter to west
the weight of my winds
as proof of my lowly
remembrance
so dear was the tracing
of ways we were come
to begin
where we ended
before

from the road
even now
forgotten lays best
weeds spent with briar
and thorn
recalled to our worth
existence somehow
shall hold not my heart
for one moment
more

how fitful
this dreaming
this almost becomes –
as you martyr yourself
while I wait
skilled at forgiveness
tho never once asked
the nails almost bent
in surrender
of late

darling
the well
needs repair in the autumn
let not the leaves
have their way
to find what was needed
are souvenirs still
carved into places
time can’t betray

for another
once offered –
begged without word
the meaning of life
from a star
shifted the covers
while silence snuck in
left me a note
of your going
afar

the hinges
have rusted –
and there go the rhymes
tho echoed
by living –
the sharing divine
of a path
not so separate
as the ways you have been
a kiss waiting tender
your coming
again

were tears
left to dry
I’ve forgotten my placeplaces I am
and remember only
your smile

as proof
of submission –
to find you again
in the softest
surrender –
this staying
a while

a truth
so familiar
as once I was yours
and knew not the taste
of goodbye

light
has a way
of returning us home
– love gives us
reason
to fly

desguised graces

of stones
four hundred more
than mine –
the path to you was traded
forsaken as the sin
that held me here

to know you
as I knew you well
how sweet the coming back
became of longing –
one more passing
near

became a story
told by hands –
silence has her way
of folding into
destinies the same

were places I’d forgotten
how the hell
you made me feel
years have gone
and taken me
to blame

where are you
what words are come
what taste is on your lips
as truth to lie awake
beyond your will

the leaving
makes a deeper cut
than e’er the welcome home
arms have waited lifetimes
to be filled

asIamknown

far beyond
the aching branch
stars are watching now
as line by line
touch by touch
we learn
to live within the knowing
we’ve questioned
all our lives
nightbirds wing
our whispers
to the dark

. . .

last I knew ~

intome

poetry
keeps one more line
as folded bits of you
evidence
to graces
wearing through
cleaved apart my mystery –
held me until then
when last I knew
– once I’d be
again

guarded apprehension
solace works the same –
as years erased
were I
another flame –
sweat beneath the covers
wept aloud at times
for choices
gone the way
of useless rhyme

silently to wander
beyond the feel of light –
tis there
I hold my rest
and take my flight
beholding as to everything
some meaning
to discern –
how much of me
remains
for me to learn
