our story

what judgements now
the pillow makes –
of those
ten thousand more to break
hush the telling
of what our own –
so busy now the tongue

tary not
on grand design
to make of self the more
by fate
would lay aside the robes
of grace –
and gather yet
the rags of hate

would envy die
or greed consume
the righteous in resounding
how far the victor
falling – was not for wrong
the right

hear this prayer
was only one –
when held a sinner chained
returned to love
by one divine –
let love our truth
reclaim

Author’s Note: In light of this week’s announcements and
headline ‘falls from grace’. We sink no lower than the
moment we bend to pick the stone.  The only story we write is our own.

close enough

of retracing
scattered graces –
storms clouds gather me around
blackened feathers
silken wages –
haunt the soul
with not a sound

who would know
 of those to listen –
where you are
tho once for me –
I knew you best
I loved you better
but for the man you couldn’t be

clearer eyes
persuade the heavens
counted tulips through the fire
 given love
the grace for living –
sweet the touch
beyond desire

are you now
tho who can tell me
what of faith
when life is past –

was the love I knew becoming
ever real or just
my last

. . .

forever (more) ~

scattered

were coming back more
than asked of forgiveness –
no one would blame me
for running (away)
picking through pieces
were left of the ruins –
fashioned to story
with nothing to say

longer the leaving
than ever I wanted
destiny cooled in a cup
by the sink
wishes and wondering
(how will I know you)
when lost are these verses
of breathing to ink

you and your highways
while I – to the back roads
dust on your face
are briars (my own)
willed to remember
nights without shadow
reach me
(to teach me)
another way home

a place on the map
a weathered remembrance
heaven and earth
were switched in our stead
light streamed
as moments of angels
(and demons)
pressed in our pressing –
and stored ‘neath the bed

tho winds
yet were blowing
to seasons (unnamed)
by graces retracing
ten thousand (too few)
sunrise decided
in our rush to discover
time without memory
of (just) passing through

leave me the river
and take of your oceans
I’ll keep the lantern
(and give you the sun)
where are the stones
we laid on tomorrow –
coming back sweeter
into love
(we’ve become)

. . .

lost in the leaving ~

choices

a wave
through the window
as life pulled away
for moments
your hand on the glass

reasons I’ve yet
to remember the same
– lifetimes returning
too fast

to eyes out of focus
grace without fear
to know
as I know
what was waiting
me here

were you lost
in that leaving
or felled by the light
as the sun burned a scar
to the glass

questions
unanswered

by distances come
in a blink –
was eternity known
left as a warmth
on a still fragile day
reason –
much harder
to own

a gift
when hands
found truth
in the touching –
a wave reconciled
to the last

trust

were there storms before
we lasted –
and now the signs are gone
scars remain
but not with thought to loss
or changes due
their coming back
stories writ by time
sweetened now by tenderness
and truth

forgiven are the choices
were come the sake of love
would not I know
I’d make the same again
flush against the feeling
blossomed by the bliss
wishing long on stars
still hang the sky

lace is streamed
from evergreen
robins crowd the yard
where morning bread
was scattered from the porch
silhouette of winter shapes
the fences falling down
I sit awhile
wrapped in solitude

a quilted patch
called living
no pattern but of love
tiny hands once stitched
and cursed and made
destinies to warm me
more I’ve yet to see –
coffee cold
but still it makes me sing

where we were
we are the same –
as silence keeps the dawn
showers fall
and there the seeds
redeemed
quietly the sunlight stirs
life in shades of cedar –
witness to the waking
pulls the love
around

. . .

close ~

rails

of mysteries
unraveled –
hours into lives
leaving naught a sign
of where we were
rings into an aged oak
rails no longer sing –
winking now to sails
beyond the dark

evidence of faraway
sits in rust and briar –
almost gone
and who is left to tell
dusty roads
and no one else
knows the ways we came
to understand
truths another held

as pieces
of forever –
fold into the apron
stones are falling
someone let them in
doors to squeak
against the hinge
hold my hand
and sway

lunas tease the seeker
from the din

bittersweet
the ancient hymm
sang us once to death
as melody laid soft
upon the snow –
fleeting life
remembering the reasons
come again

close the night
and lets pretend
we know

one to break ~

pardon

if e’er the time
of compromise
or choice
I couldn’t make
to cut into the petal
for the robin’s sake

as pardon for the mayfly
a summer more
in sleep
gathered not to locust
seven deep

tis not my way
for choosing
the perfume o’er
the fin
feathers – which to fly
and which to swoon

glories seem to find a way
when all the rest
have died
to fashion of a web
tho not of gloom

were one to break
I surely would
for grief of places gone
as Friday
mourns the Monday
all week long

as fields
denied the flower
remember her always
purple dress
and swaying with the breeze

consequence
of letting go
the universe allows
but who shall know
of choices
I am none

were e’er the time
be written
for one more breath or bud
take of me
and let the seeds
burst red with love
divine

. . .

and mandolins ~

swoon

build a nest
above my door
and I won’t make you move
already there
is family on the porch
feathered friends
and mandolins
breast to breast
to stone –
twilight takes
whatever
I confess

stitch a coat
from verses wrote –
letters to the trees
are lying now in wait
beneath my bed
sealed with ruby smudges
such a perfect shade
of kiss –
willed to rhyme
made silent by a sigh

. . .

dreamscapes ~

sometimes

in the wake
of a dream
a tear to my face
so quietly
tenderness come
spoke without speaking
knew what was known
and wrapped was my faith
in once more
alone

pressed
as the fairest
of bloom to the page
perfumed reminder of us

dust

what will it matter
when time passes on
the imprint of moments
we stood
in this place
and watched as the sun
burned a hole –
coddled by bourbon
and lace

wisdom has found
a place on my pillow
while knowledge sleeps
out on the porch
makes not a peep
as eternity falls –
swept as the last
perfect star to be saved

e’er will I wonder
of distance not far
and places forgiven
as witness
to change
hands barely touching
remember it all

how I envy
their innocent streams

tellme

as it was written
so are we now
reach out and gather
these words to resound
in the coming and going
in seed yet to bud
gardens denied
disbelief

traces revealed
in the living undone
breath even now has a way
of deciding the places
my soul shall retain
as silver makes haste
– time
disappears

as one
with the universe
sung by its tune
laid side by side for a while
choices defending
the feel of the road
as somewhere
they wait for me now

mystic
a winter white stag
keeps a bride
on the meadow
and sometimes
he finds her in dreams
they speak not of hours
or measure of more –
and waste not a tear
for goodbyes

for patience ~

holding

december sits
in last year’s clothes
somewhere in the closet
patent leather shoes
and gabardine
woolen slacks
I hate them so –
you’ll never see me
wearing
gloves to match my scarf
to match my coat

barefeet stretch
into the cool –
boots along the hallway
bend me down a pair or two
will keep me here
til spring
winter winds
my story know –
talking through the window
frost the mirror –
tempt my soul to wing

dimestore pearls
and chapstick hearts
pictures crowd the mantle
proof of days
were seasons past the same
roses stand with brittle heads
bowed to prayer
for patience –
lacey lips are calling me
by name

practiced hands
deny the cold
to cup the fragile blossoms
breathed again a miracle –
as memory of the sun
softest hope
remembers now –
the promise of another
summer rain to save us
beyond december
comes
