undenied

dreams melt easy
into places of home
a box in the attic
of truths
holding still
as little green stamps
held to a page
would buy us the heavens
– a treasure of will

feathering
shadows to dance
up above
the ceiling takes life
of her own
ushering thought
into meaning returned
wrapped in a blanket
of old

strange
our repentance
our surrender to more
than a dollar made do
with the coming
to whole
to see without seeing
to know
all we keep
where value is kept
in the attic
of soul

. . .

sweetly

where
the wind
a moment spoke
in breezes
to the ocean –
a time or two
when trusted you
to stay

whispers
wake me –
all the night
around me wraps
with wanting
for one more time
– one more
yesterday

to live within
this consequence –
sworn to breathless
morning –
sometimes
I feel your presence
moving there

wondering
of where the winds
and where –
the waves are singing
songs I once
remembered
everywhere

. . .

Author’s note: I love the ocean – and the mountains. When I am on the shore,
I can close my eyes, and there – the sound of leaves pushing one into another.
When among the trees, I close my eyes and hear waves upon the sand. The
songs are the same – love speaks a language all can understand.
A story told by evergreen writ upon the tides.

the only me I know ~

last I knew

there was a place
we were going
never knew from where
we came
our dreams were old
but dying meant
we’d never leave again –
we could take of these
and leave the rest behind

there was a spot
along the highway –
we stopped just yesterday
and counted miles
stones and stars –
the distance to today
never stayed for long
the holding on
was more than we
could take

was a breath before I caught it
pushed away

there were words
denied of meaning
thought denied a place –
wings the width of shoulders
held together
strings of grace

there were maps
to match –
and ways to clear
cedars filled with swallows
and blue –
the deepest blue
beyond the trees

never looked the same
when looking back
recalled another morning
when cotton floated
low above the fields

it seems that way
the way it was –
and I with love to squander
could have sworn I held your hand
and closed my eyes

eternity
was always more
than I could dare imagine –
when a moment stretched
to take of time –
the only me
I know

. . .

last on my pillow ~

because of you

settle me in
as seasons digress
and leaves
burn their way
into snow
reminded of iris
– the color of wings
and a time
passed before
I could know

what was truth
to rekindle
a flame nearly gone –
a song
almost faded

from word
skins are worn easy
as twilight to press
life into passing
unheard

trace
comprehension
of places between
the last on my pillow
– a time
disappeared

starlight is writ
to the back of my hand –
counting my way
back to here

aboveme

stealing me now
three breaths
(maybe more)
as you lay
with your head
on my heart
telling aloud
the story beginning
– light making sense
(of the dark)

maybe
(and sure)
this fate to uncover
was writ
long before
we were one
to know (as we know)
to feel (what we feel)
wrapped
in a moment –
remembered as home

stealing me now
three breaths
(maybe more)

nearasthis

more or less
as curve to curve
the ease of line
to lace
of soul by love decided
worn to light
wished into forever
arms just full enough
rock me now
beneath this hope
of love

as a moment
held together
wherein tiny stitches
hands have gone
but here the proof remains
a memory of graces
lived inside a circle
spread beyond the making
of pieces cut
just right

. . .

intimacy

of mysteries –
the questions
sometimes more
the answers bear
to wonder what the reason
we were saved

unburdened
by forgiveness
grace we never earned
starry skies
to cleave us from the pain

beholding
to our knowing
of all we were to be
mercy for road
to rise above

dusty cowl
of muscadine
wild their vapor stings
given ease
where yesterday
we loved

nowandthen

forget
of then
remembered when
we might have known some other
ways to go
the long way
leading here
distances becoming
the memory of more
trace to trees
dirty feet
and graces
holding near

the weary one
I’ve known a few
and more
I could not name
are sleeping
with the angels
yet tonight
safe beyond the reach
of words –
wooly warms
and warriors
listen now their prayer
for fearless flight

ages past
as nowhere else
they know
of ways I’ve come
and how the ache
has kept a page
within
salted by my sorrows
lifted high
my bliss
remembered me
of all I willed

birthdaymorning

daybreak makes
for tangled verse
last night’s
let’s remember
the lay of light
against the night
– a slow and sweet
surrender

as breath
into the winter stilled
poems press another
of long ago –
we willed a place
in time
letters wrapped in ribbon
hide beneath the bed
– verses sweat
to martyr every line

from all that was
to garner this
– sorrows held apart
someone wrote
their name into the fold
the memory
of breaking
fences
fears
and heart
silent hallelujahs fill
the soul

nearIam

calm me down
with whispers –
stories of the road
times you called my name
I heard you clear
above the dreams
of might have been
and where you’ll rest
tonight –
as I with plans
one day
to hold you near

silence stales
the cigarette
lipstick coffee cup
clean the break
of one more living shared
long before the sunset
knew to save
her paints –
your fingerprints
were glowing everywhere

dream the stars
from going
with questioning just so
a universe
where love is felt
the same
as sleep along the highway
counting back the miles
– stirred awake
by whispers
of your name
