reason slips
a negligee
of bloom across
the floor
a lowly sigh
of lullabye
beckons me
once more
as firelight
and where was I
before the heavens
gleamed
another me
made famous
in your dreams

lord knows
the fields are empty now –
by summer burned away
and I wonder
do you miss
the tender nights
do you think about
forever –
a sunrise such as this
when clouds compete –
a winter quilt
july
do you dream
without permission
awake within a sigh –
stumble out of ribbons
to the porch
do you speak of me
into the still
where morning waits
the night
do you watch
the road –
and curse the moving on

yesterday I chattered
as silence spilled around –
gave my everything
to make it go –
to ease the ache
of restlessness –
charming as I wrote
of all I sought
and all I claimed
to know
til loosed again
from wanting
– ties that swore to bind
years confessed
a faultless void to fill
my every spare
with something more –
empty with surprise
– content to
make my home
within the still

there’s something here
more than life –
or the mourning of beats
strum
strum
strum
from the depths of becoming
a devil –
a saint
worried anew
o’er things we have lost
tho tied not a fret
to the things we have not
– ways we let go
or the path walked upon
forgotten the promise
made long ago
prayers rarely granted
by those without sin
to those without measure
for where love
begins

there are moments
just this side of sleep
where in silence
I confess
to every word unspoken
every sin of carelessness
relieved the weight
of waiting –
of promise left to waste
surrendered to my memory –
gathered unto grace

i’m a frayed
recollection
smokey and grey
a vision of promise
by life
overlayed
secrets and signs
hands you once knew
like a path
through the darkest
shadows of you
as lone silver skies
valkries in flight
removed at the slightest
illusion
of light

frame this horizon
with all I have witnessed
crowd to the corner
where heart meets to soul
bear me the weight
no more than a memory
of destiny traded
to a dream long ago
laundry and laces
cracked oatmeal glasses
parts given way
as collections laid bare
black and white stories
are telling without us
faded a photo
of a photo somewhere
who is that boy
at the edge of the smiling
where now his reasons
though lost once before
held by a longing
bigger than pardon
when left his horizon
my own to restore

whisper light
into my heart –
breathe against my breast
write your verses tender as a sigh
low that I might harken
when nights to lonely fall
as stars beneath
an ancient heaven
sprawl
speak
so only I can hear –
make your story mine
relearning truth
from kisses –
life where
souls entwine

departed
as the want for more
when seasons passed between
the shoreline
and the essence born of dreams
silence swirls
in shades of pale –
shadows skirt and scatter
were not for this
a promise
once we made
to come again
to know anew –
the power of surrender
as crushed to shells
along a distant strand
beauty hides
in early tides
flowing outward
ever –
to meet the sun
once lusted
by the light
