yesterhere

confused
by a promise
I’ll come back to find you
warm as a whiskey –
slow let me learn
of moments made sweeter
of a morning
left broken –
to memories scattered
let me return

to a time
I was willing –
and there you were welcomed
as shadows to dancing
whispers goodbye
telling of dreams
red swirling sunlight –
a cascade of reasons
for your hand
holding mine

. . .

beneath the frost ~

beneath the frost

were that I some mistletoe
strung above your bed
a cup of bitter coffee
(long forgot)
survivors of another
time I thought to leave
you begged me wait (the winter)
warmth beneath the frost
I cannot speak
for vows betrayed –
what is (what isn’t) true
how many lifetimes
might I brave –
for one more breath
(of you)

forgotten now to seek ~

last night
I rediscovered
another way to you –
beyond the gate
between the evergreens

on paths
where truth was hiding
pressed as falling leaves –
maple stars
a canopy of dreams

fortune tends
to places
I’d forgotten now to seek
destiny where darkness sleeps
beside a memory

how am I to reconcile
verses lost to living –
broken boards with candlelight
it’s raining
all the time

heaven left a letter
on the table by the bed
loving arms
warm to us
again

will we remember ~

might another war
come anyway
despite our fervent prayers
might shadows claim
the corners
where the best of yesterday
is folded into linen
and pressed against a page
guarded as a name
we dare not say
where darkness waits
to fell us
with denial of the dawn –
where sunlight sits
on golden fields
and flows through open doors
will we remember
how we suffered –
when fate returns us home
forgotten
to our memories –
from beginning
every one

. . .

in another place
I held you –
beneath a golden sky
– traced your lips
where once a kiss
was mine
waiting as you waited –
as promise
turned to flight
words became a victory
would see us thru
to light

now and then
a song I hear
above the sound of falling
a lesson much the same
as stars deny
eternity and almost
were you there
to promise someday
we’d find our ways
across this great
divide

how often here
I wonder why
and question more than listen –
to answers come
sometimes while still
I sleep
beneath a road
of diamonds –
a path to evermore
glistens bright
with souls
I swore
to keep

beyond this day
of forgotten wills
night to darkness cleaves
a canopy of stars
where all
will shine

watching long
the narrow path –
searching familiar skies
grieving still
for one more
only time

how many now
the roads behind –
as promise laid before
a velvet stretch of moss
beneath our toes

the fading sun
reminding us
of all we’ve left to leave
before in some –
another time
we know

another time

how bare
these fleeting seasons
wherein our passion lies
as dungeons black
was there the martyr fell
confessing
to the almost
didn’t make the news
a love without the need
or strength to tell

between the will
for one more day –
an hour
more or less returns
taken from the ending to repent
sins denied their pardon
cling to me at night
– longing warms
despite my best intent

wishes
I’ve decided
are rarely worth the rub
as moments seed the heart
with lets pretend
a boy I knew
my best to love –
flames anew sometimes
when breathed aloud
a silent might have been

If you know me, you’ve come to understand that much of what I believe to be true I learned early, nurtured by love, and surrounded by nature. I rarely read anything without finding another perspective, one in which the lesson is made clearer, sweeter, with a foundation as dear as old roots and ancient stars.

Yesterday, I read something about grief and immediately determined another point of reference (simply of love).

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of camping. Earlier this week, mama and I talked about some of those times, those which are as near today as they were then (close your eyes, brother).

One such endearment lies within the process my mom and dad had for getting us to bed at night. Mom would take us to the bath house earlier in the evening (before dark), and we would return to sit around the fire after supper. As it got later, at some point, daddy would fill a dishpan with warm water and would, one by one, wash our feet and carry us to the tent. What a wonderful memory!

Truly, in retrospect, I’ve come to understand that this was likely an effort to protect the tent from dirty feet…………yet, still……..

The thing I read about grief compared death to the extinguishing a lamp before going to bed. But my immediate point of reference was to nights around the fire. If you’ve been camping, you know that people tend to retire slowly rather than all at once. I recall lying in the tent, listening to conversations taking place around the fire, mesmerized by shadows dancing on the canvas.

What a lovely thought, to think of those who’ve gone on, knowing they are as close as the next room, just beyond the canvas. While we linger around the fire, tending to life, they have retired to dream……….where they wait for us………….

For another dawn, with air so clean it surely is the breath of God, and of bacon frying over an open fire!

. . .

beyond the will
where living still
a fire burns
the brighter

acceptance, as easy as breathing, beauty, blessings, divine this, family, forgiveness, gravel roads, home, knowing, lessons, letting go, life, love, nothing is ever lost, only, sacred intimacy, simply, truth, understanding

Try as I might, from time to time I need reminding (or, as my Ma Hutch would have said, ‘a skillet to the head’). I can get so caught up in the drama that I forget the bottom line. I neglect the one thing that matters most.

If there’s a rule by which my daddy lives, it’s simply this. “Don’t ever let a problem become bigger than a person to love.” He makes it seem easy, to be honest.

And sometimes, it is easy. Like when everyone agrees or we’re all focused on that single one brilliant thing that takes our collective breath away.428e9a870d81a921d

But most of the time, opinions get caught in the middle. Egos stand in the way. Perceptions about things that no one even witnessed – well, a lot of things get in the way. And before you know it, we’re arguing about whether it’s too early to plant watermelon or too late to start a movie.

And the thing (love) that was absolutely the most important thing is somehow ‘managed over’, reclassified into the ‘not so important’ file in error.

That’s not to say that love is forgotten (I love you; it’s the liking that hangs me up). It isn’t. It’s just a second thought, something taken for granted that never should be. It’s the lone footnote that should have been the title.

My mother meddles in things that aren’t her business. My sister struggles with demons almost 30 years old. My children and grandchildren have lives of their own, plans of their own. The moon turns a jealous eye, and before we notice, another season is passed – another time not to come again.

But if we’re lucky (so blessed), that thing that mattered (love) – it remains. When the voices are lost in argument, opinions have burned away, and the quiet settles soft like the snore of a sleeping child – it is there (still).

So, today, before I respond too quickly to an email or a text, I remind myself that nothing is bigger than my love for these. Nothing I will allow.

in fields
where yesterday
forgotten
petals crush the ground
with the memory
of every winter
frost

bring me round
one more time
before the blossom fades
let me breathe
the sweet perfume
of love –
was never
lost
