daddy and me

how gracious time
with all her ways –
to spread a comfort o’er me
when nights
their darkness gathers
to my bed
I recall a time
ten thousand more
as breath when I was dying
hands around my hands
a kiss upon the head

dreams of somewhere
I was yours
for miles
the pathway beckoned
a springtime breeze
swirling blossoms round
til all I knew
was dancing –
two and back again
within your arms
high above
the ground

…

April 6th – Two years since my daddy passed. His real birthday. ❤

gracethismuch

conceded to grace
when nothing made sense
but to journey alone
in the dark

what can you do
when the road turns to dust
and all you believe
is erased
from your view

by the sun sinking now
the burn of the past
as burdens worn low on your back –
is a light to the way
ever too much
to ask

you’ve wondered aloud
uncertain of all
but your unworthy place
in the answer
of love

when dawns
an eternity
you never deserved
a balm to your troubles
a place to lie down

nearenough

let me love you
while I can –
while my hands
can decipher
the map of your soul
the breadth
of your journey
merging with mine
for a moment
untested –
the beginning
of time

let me love you
while I can –
while these bones
can remember
the fusion of wills
fingers weaving
with fingers
toes to curl
forgive me this –
the beginning of all
I’d forgotten
to miss

leftofme

how often now
my soul is fed
with crumbs of yesterday
of memories
I’ve yet to give
away

o precious song
of silent lips
when whispered –
come to me
could e’er the wind
abide
such mystery

a solitude
of aging sands –
by graces undenied
tis not for me the silver
grew –
another youth
to hide

years replayed
and laid again –
o’er those I dare not keep
dreams –
beyond the countenance
of sleep

within the hall
where time is charged
by one still yet
to know –
love becomes a river
to wash upon
my soul

always

As of late, it seems I struggle with words.

No, that’s not right. It’s not a struggle really. It seems more I am resigned to a place unfamiliar (and yet not). It is a quiet peace, perhaps even a place created by grief, but not unwelcomed or uncomfortable.

It is a time of adjustment, acceptance, and clarity ~ a period of understanding that I have wondered might be related to aging, loss, or faith. Regardless, it is not cursed or filled with anxiousness. It is an unexpected blessing, a realization of grace, of love.

I miss my daddy, but it is not an ache that leaves me restless, looking for answers that I already possess. Rather, it is the little things where I find myself wishing he could share it with me (just before realizing that he does). When I round the curve on the road home and notice a group of more than twenty deer in the field near the woods; in wings fluttering along the fence line as I tend the feeder; a light through the window when I awake to the sound of my name.

Blessings.

Time is nothing but an invisible marker, a thread binding us forever to a moment – or rather binding the moment to us so that it is always the same, as near as our next breath. Ours.

We are never without love.

an autumn night
beyond the shift
were time
erased
forgotten now
the way it felt
to soar
the sticky wet
of birthing
was willing us
to die
somewhere lost –
far above the day
we floated
on a whisper
wrapped in ancient feathers
remembering
a time we dared
to fly

sweetly

within the shy
of noonday shade
how many more
were memories left
untended for the keeping
unashamed the letting go
words content
to let another know
of moments
not so distant
perhaps some other life
roads for crossing
over
let the night
free us yet
from tangled dreams
transgressions of before
let me sleep
within your
wanting arms
listen
there the speaking
of night birds
to the moon
– of trembling hearts
resolved to touch
the dawn

_ Middle Prong River and Dogwoods Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee ___

from birth –
the river
was bound to the trees
rocked neath their
branches
each night
sharing the story
tell me again
of weaving together
as stars into light
pattern reflected
in slivers of green
chasing a path
of song to the sea
warmed by the rocks
and swept by the tides
versing the winds
of shared destiny
of a night not so distant
– dreams just the same
as the taste
of forever –
tears without name

when leaves don the color
of twilight descent
when night pulls away
from the dawn
when tears all have dried
will you remember me then
as a time
saved for living
divine

will the birds
sing a chorus –
songs known by heart
to fill up the trees
– as breath
with the breeze

that blows through
your hair
unsettling loves
you’ve forgotten
to remember
somehow

will you wake
with a start –
with a longing for home
miles from the place
was forever begun
might I find you again
by another
someday
a light spilling warm
to my face

elusive as memory
at the edge of a dream
where last I was held
in your arms
untouched by tomorrow
a moment of grace
lingers now
on beginning –
my sorrows
erased

firefly

As of late, I’ve felt the gentle pull of time, tender reminders that the road before isn’t quite as long as the one behind.

Twilight cools on an old porch, as the sun fades. Violets soften in the shadows, lavender etched by lace.

Breath is stilled by the assurance of the stars, a look back to where they shine, unaccustomed to the wish not yet made.

gather me sweetly
as a name first rehearsed
a line
unwritten to rhyme
verse and there
to places
where grace
is held apart –
words
beneath my pillow
o the night
