settledhere

of graces
I am grateful
blessings
overflowed
to fill the page
to fill my years
below

of sorrows
not so many
much more their joy
to find
when name by name
I call to them
divine

lowly
my transgressions
my forgiveness
bartered none
for paths
already grieving
every one

summer lace
and winter sighs
shall hold of me
the light
of graces
I am grateful
for this night

allIknow

how quietly
the noreast winds
wrestle with the pines
whispering
of southern shores
and sea
secrets passed
from one
the other
how was where
and why
the truth is held
in silent reverie

against the boughs
beneath the strain
of seasons
gone before
tho not a one
can tell the story
all
from pieces
held together
by the memory
of wind –
hymns we brushed
against the bark
will echo
past
the fall

lighternowanother time
when ashes fell
oceans blue
with splendor
left upon the shores
a wintergreen
messages
were never meant
this faraway to travel
promise rose
above
the smallest dream

graces come
and graces mine
within the still
of sorrow
are counted down
and back o’er ways
I came
further than
remembered me –
songs I used to wear
blossoms born
of longing –
sweeter
flame

beating

steady these hands
as easy this part
bruise not this soul
with confusion
cradle me now
in thought unimposed
a silence awaiting
my word

meet with my pen
the sweetest intention –
as once tender lines
are faded away
passed as a feeling to
moments eternal –
reminders of living –
a dying
each day

in the slow wake
of shadows
ommission of self –
in truths written down
with our own
(yes my own)
trembling touch
steady me stranger
return as a season –
remains of divine

easy the passing
of time into grace –
pressing the notion
that nothing is saved
but a place in the center –
a voice unrelenting
steady this beating
of beats
within mine

for birth
yet becoming
the long silent word

acceptance

Earlier this week, I received an email from a dear friend – updating me
on the health of her husband (cancer) and inquiring on the
status of a mutual friend.   I responded, and her response
to me left me with a feeling – that I needed to
post this. Even in the knowing, it was
good to find someone else who did as well.

[Obviously, names have been changed; feel free to find your own.]

. . .

Dearest Beth,

Leah is fine, but I so understand your comments regarding Dan. I feel
the same about
Leah. When I call in the morning, and she doesn’t answer,
I immediately wonder if
something has happened. Fortunately,
there are lots of days where there is no power

where she lives or issues with the phone lines in between. Or
days when her night has
been horrid and she has finally
gotten to sleep with aid of medication and she doesn’t

even hear the phone.

She knows I worry, but we’ve reached a wonderful place of knowing
– and appreciating
the gift that is now. If there
is grace in growing older, it is coming to an
understanding of
what matters. We’ll sometimes laugh about stuff we could be doing

but we’re not – quite simply because age gives us the wisdom
to know that the road
isn’t quite as long and we’re not going
to fill it up with things that have no

value.

I’m sorry to hear about Dan, but another part of me is reminded
of a story from
years ago. A dear friend spoke of her father’s passing
with cancer and I commented
how hard it must be to watch a
loved one go slowly. She smiled back and said that the offset

was something so many don’t have – notice. Her family had
been given time to say
aloud everything they wanted to say,
to share what they needed to share. The end was

still hard, but the ‘afterward’ much easier without
the regrets over what had

never been said.

There are a world of people out there who would give
anything for one
more day, one more hour, one more time……..
to say. They had no notice. It’s a

wonderful thing to think we never hold back, but we do……..we
keep from each other the
most intimate of our feelings
and then we have nowhere to put them.

May you find a place most tender.

Love,
Me

Wherever I

of loves
not so many
ten thousand
one more
than a faceless reminder
of where I began

on paths
so familiar
as claimed by my shoes
the shade of my scarlet
to bloom

held to a silence
where nothing
is said
of graces
unhurried release

where distance
is none
but for traces
of time
and a place
they remember me
still

staying

of ways
I have not many
but to be
as I was meant
– some solace
to the fallen
I repent

the blessing
come of letting
– the bliss
of leaning in
to places unforgotten
I ascend

to wonder
where
and what might be
– for this
will I return
as colors into maple
rivers burn

remember me
to shadows –
sweetest breath
within the cold
of breaking –
there the beauty
– taking hold

as nothing more
for only this –
such truth
as love revealed
a sigh
within the silence
holds me still

. . .

Author’s Note: Inspired by All Saints Sunday.  What remembrance
shall hold you yet?

somewherestill

the best of me
comes late some days
apples
berries
blackbirds
the night hangs wet
against my windowpane

leaves are falling
hear their sighs
of spring
denying winter
would come –
and yet he does
to love again

judge me well
though who can tell
what secrets
I’ve been keeping
some would swear
to stories
never heard

but keeping here
far more than lines
more than
winds to weary
names and faces
graces
undeserved

save the light
still the might
of those who have no
sorrow
those who know
of every trust
by name

somewhere now
a gale of birds
wings beyond
the keeping –
angels every one
where I remain

breath

light
wears the first breath
of word
for the poet
a moment unmeant
for the cleaving apart
smudges of carbon
blue and black cinder
stay our confusion –
of ashes
to hearth

in the want
for another –
some knowing unsaid
else silence
these blessings erase
with sorrows grown eager
turning us round –
forsaken for love
would hold us
always

where the next
is beginning –
the past grieving so
as the shutter
of spring –
a flight coming home
to resolve
what is missing
remembered somehow
as the taste of surrender
in words
long ago

sweetly

where
the wind
a moment spoke
in breezes
to the ocean –
a time or two
when trusted you
to stay

whispers
wake me –
all the night
around me wraps
with wanting
for one more time
– one more
yesterday

to live within
this consequence –
sworn to breathless
morning –
sometimes
I feel your presence
moving there

wondering
of where the winds
and where –
the waves are singing
songs I once
remembered
everywhere

. . .

Author’s note: I love the ocean – and the mountains. When I am on the shore,
I can close my eyes, and there – the sound of leaves pushing one into another.
When among the trees, I close my eyes and hear waves upon the sand. The
songs are the same – love speaks a language all can understand.
A story told by evergreen writ upon the tides.

last I knew

there was a place
we were going
never knew from where
we came
our dreams were old
but dying meant
we’d never leave again –
we could take of these
and leave the rest behind

there was a spot
along the highway –
we stopped just yesterday
and counted miles
stones and stars –
the distance to today
never stayed for long
the holding on
was more than we
could take

was a breath before I caught it
pushed away

there were words
denied of meaning
thought denied a place –
wings the width of shoulders
held together
strings of grace

there were maps
to match –
and ways to clear
cedars filled with swallows
and blue –
the deepest blue
beyond the trees

never looked the same
when looking back
recalled another morning
when cotton floated
low above the fields

it seems that way
the way it was –
and I with love to squander
could have sworn I held your hand
and closed my eyes

eternity
was always more
than I could dare imagine –
when a moment stretched
to take of time –
the only me
I know
