the best of me
comes late some days
apples
berries
blackbirds
the night hangs wet
against my windowpane

leaves are falling
hear their sighs
of spring
denying winter
would come –
and yet he does
to love again

judge me well
though who can tell
what secrets
I’ve been keeping
some would swear
to stories
never heard

but keeping here
far more than lines
more than
winds to weary
names and faces
graces
undeserved

save the light
still the might
of those who have no
sorrow
those who know
of every trust
by name

somewhere now
a gale of birds
wings beyond
the keeping –
angels every one
where I remain

big enough ~

onceIknew

stories now
my daddy tells
of times before the better
took us by surprise
and shut our soul
of red clay paths
and old tin lines –
mary heaven
showed us
the ways to home
was not so far
to go

no ringing
of the latest news
no clamor to achieve
candles burned
beside
the feather bed
children wrapped
in babies
held as one to one
blessings come
– wherever
prayers were said

no looking back
or leaving long
another chance –
for nothing
would shake our faith
or move the least
to fall
dirty hands
so tender –
eyes caressed the light
dreams just big
enough –
to hold us all

aboveme

stealing me now
three breaths
(maybe more)
as you lay
with your head
on my heart
telling aloud
the story beginning
– light making sense
(of the dark)

maybe
(and sure)
this fate to uncover
was writ
long before
we were one
to know (as we know)
to feel (what we feel)
wrapped
in a moment –
remembered as home

stealing me now
three breaths
(maybe more)

birthdaymorning

daybreak makes
for tangled verse
last night’s
let’s remember
the lay of light
against the night
– a slow and sweet
surrender

as breath
into the winter stilled
poems press another
of long ago –
we willed a place
in time
letters wrapped in ribbon
hide beneath the bed
– verses sweat
to martyr every line

from all that was
to garner this
– sorrows held apart
someone wrote
their name into the fold
the memory
of breaking
fences
fears
and heart
silent hallelujahs fill
the soul

started here

it was a time
reserved for wishing
– the fields were flush
with grain
when a boy
of almost nothing
stood his ground

he dreamed in shades
of fourteen years
a girl behind the glass
found him
as he found her
leaning in

offered up a place to go –
 folded worlds of wonder
took no mind
to what they’d find
tears and joy
and laughter

sailing out
beyond the window pane

three months
down a dusty road
he found the nerve
for asking
far more than this
more than lives could bear
took her for a midnight ride
down across the border
trading rings
and counting stars
between

another then
and moments past
without the need
for telling
what was left
and all a heart might hold
rockabye
and baby –
let the buntin stay
for all we know
was this
our chosen way

now again
the road becomes
a path someone forgot
leaves are falling
scarlet
round my bed
reminders sit in flannel
sheets of gabardine
where he was
she fills
the time between

Author’s Note: In September 1955, a man and a woman shared
their first kiss. He was 23 and she only 14. Three months later,
they married, and two months after that, he was discharged from the Air Force.
Seven days later, he started a job he would work for 52 years. Nine
months after that seven days, I was born. Still they yearn for
one more kiss, and I am blessed on this day – when they celebrate the
start of so very much love.

Story is everything.

what tender chord
is risen
in gratitude
for grace
a truth
to soul remembered
we defend
whispers
hide in velvet ears
lately echoes
roll
sweetly from
the shadows
pulling in

what beauty
dares
the earth conceive
light and love
abound
tis there
I wake
from wandering
– as word
without a sound

she spins
in sleeves
of flannel
worried not for word
counts the stars
becauseby name
(gives them
hers)

cursing not
the seeker
nor winds
to take him far
beyond the light
(still
within her arms)

♥♥

in sweet
she pulls
at shadows
and wanders then
to dream
of wishes made
(and where
their burning rests)

in choice
denied the choosing
fortunes yet
untold
for love beyond
her knowing
(gratefulness)

sacred course to fly

ancient spires
our secrets hold
souls to love before
sorrows wept
in folds of silent joy

whispers
guard a faithful moon
lovers turn into
the still of dreams
forgotten to us

instrumental

the rain has come
atlantis
where are you gone
what legions knew
yet turned
your will away
separated
now again –
by miles
and men and more
yet still when nights
are cold –
I hear you pray

wherein the sin
you might have been
kept your lies
beneath
covers even now
the longer bed
an orchestrated
guillotine
sanctified by fire
broken hearts
around your skirt
are spread

o tell me
once again as I
this restlessness betray
to know the truth
was ever yours
to tell
ashes float
a solemn rift
voices rise beyond
spirits speak
of sorrows –
weaved into the veil

with gratitude
my soul becomes
remembrance of a name –
the taking in
til I am filled –
a place
of silent
fame

to resurrect
these mysteries –
much more than I can say
a truth denied
the words as yet
shall ring
some other day

. . .

memories
are sewn to me
petals on my sleeve
a song –
a music
sweeter than the night
proof when morning finds me
drifting back
from dreams –
nestled in a sweet
embrace of light

comeagain names
already known
maple
rose
and sparrow –
called to us
reunion of the saints
