homeagain

for heaven
might I hesitate
the giving of my all
or barter here
for one more yesterday
when willing met
with needful dreams
one night beneath
the boughs
sealed within the silence
of truths we couldn’t say
as proof allowed
in making less
soul to bind my weary soul
words
the stars mistook
for let me in
whispers to the
forest floor
swirling luna flight
breath
where once
your ache
became my skin

. . .

lessons of love come before ~

knowmenow

of late
I’ve grown cold
to the ways of the world
bruised by the
easing of time

subdued by the splendor
of dreamless
intent
names rubbed away
by pieces of light

fixed to my window
by lacey white sparrows
winged past the
curtains
one night
as I lay

silent beside
the remembrance
of more
cursing the lessons
of love come before

a moment inclusive
of always

hands
O how lovely
they loved

. . .

dirty and red ~

whereandIwas

where comes
the assurance
nothing is lost
though winters seem longer
by far
than the first time
I knew you
lines barely crossed
a road wearing
somewhere
dirty and red
neath the night
I was waiting
to carry you home
with stories of always
and stars
in my hair

. . .

beyond our knowing ~

left me here
the signs of age –
a road already known
the ways
of some
an ancient storm
retold
and I
for one
could never guess
the wisdom
did he carry
would lift us up
some heaven
here
below

scattered ‘bout
these weary days
this plea
for something more
than e’er a place
of rhyme
could keep us fed
learned into
this passion
wherein your name
is writ –
folded fast
each page
upon my bed

sapphire tears
are hiden
by a questioning of light
of fear absolved
by love
I couldn’t say
of where I’d be
when morning found
me watching
for a sign
when worlds beyond
our knowing –
fall away

. . .

the only me I know ~

last I knew

there was a place
we were going
never knew from where
we came
our dreams were old
but dying meant
we’d never leave again –
we could take of these
and leave the rest behind

there was a spot
along the highway –
we stopped just yesterday
and counted miles
stones and stars –
the distance to today
never stayed for long
the holding on
was more than we
could take

was a breath before I caught it
pushed away

there were words
denied of meaning
thought denied a place –
wings the width of shoulders
held together
strings of grace

there were maps
to match –
and ways to clear
cedars filled with swallows
and blue –
the deepest blue
beyond the trees

never looked the same
when looking back
recalled another morning
when cotton floated
low above the fields

it seems that way
the way it was –
and I with love to squander
could have sworn I held your hand
and closed my eyes

eternity
was always more
than I could dare imagine –
when a moment stretched
to take of time –
the only me
I know

. . .

bedroom eyes ~

waitingdestinies

joseph
takes the twelve o’five
and wonders once again
to times removed –
a storm is moving in
of other girls
and weekend worlds
who would tell their mother
they’d met a guy
with bedroom eyes
one day

a sold out car
and not too far
to go before the leaving
clouds are gathered now
he understands
of one who waits
the other side
sits the night alone
searching through
the paper –
for memories
of home

for lines
to fit her story
tells she hasn’t told
a touch to bear
– some other hand
to hold

the cold night carries
whispers
in wait for words unsaid
joseph sees beyond
the road ahead

with wonder
when he’ll find her
when at last –
the cooling rain
a seat no longer empty
– a want to match
her name

. . .
Author’s Note: Inspired by my continuing fascination
with the ‘while I was waiting for the bus invitational’. Thanks
for the kick, Stephen.

hereaplaceIknew

lead me
soft –
this quiet calling
as willing to belong
floats the night
so tenderly
to song

veil of pretense
chords of light –
hands prepared to play
hearts to listen
distant drums
as borders rubbed away

silver green
eternal dawn –
another place I go
sweet the night
to pass between –
awakening
my soul

. . .

something more to dream ~

hometome

across
into
ten million miles
wing’ed lovers fly
eager as the pull
to home –
of once familiar skies

never knew
the way –
never felt the same
was something more to dream
to love
as I was loving you –
every mile between

as memory
committed now –
to feel what is your song
the weathered beat
of rhyme
is versed – equaled
by
my own

as thunder
rushed from lightning
falling back in time
the universe has made
a place –
for leaving words
behind

. . .

not so very ~

callis

how near
the moment
passed outside
the window left undone
worlds apart –
yet only here makes sense

the distance
not so very –
as the promise of once more
were spirits come
to witness us
again

between the next
the last of never
was – a midnight pause
sighs are met with wonder
what we might

do with one more lifetime
trade for one more night
forgiven now
the sun
to leave us blind

of falling in
or coming back
no other to consider
the truth was always here –
and I was home

stay awhile
don’t be shy
I’ll share with you
my mother –
years will find
us closer anyhow

touch
enough for memory
will swell my heart
the moon-
save this place
perfecting us
to love

somewhere
eyes are watching
the heavens
for a sign –
winds to bear me
easy
to your arms

. . .

where the night doesn’t go ~

proofstillcomes

in the rush
of a northern atlantic come home
across endless lives to embark
listen me over
start me anew
as wings beating life
from the dark

store me to winter
rouse me to spring –
sit me to rock
where the night doesn’t go
read me to poems
I’ve forgotten their taste –
somewhere I’m waiting –
still me to know

soften my fall
with the strength of your arms
glistening tears
of surrender betrayed
fix in my soul
every memory of you
waiting to fly me
away
