from the first
a whisper came –
beheld me to november
to wishes
(you remember)
touch divine
a barefoot side of heaven –
as once I thought you knew
a dusted floor
where sunlight split
the pines
a cedar box
of rusted fame
with ne’er a truth to carry
the key is gone –
but for the lock I saved
china plates
will nothing match
these shades of sarsaparilla
blessings of
another time –
forgave
crooked boards
and needs to tend –
tho who will understand
the ways I came
to walk these fields alone
tempted into trouble
morning warms the same
the night so still –
that all the stars have gone

were memories
becoming this –
pieces not for barter
shall keep to nest
the coldest night we’ve known
guarded not for staying –
we kept inside too long
ancient fires to burn away
ashes from the stone
songbirds weep
for something
lost upon the winds –
music plays
tho I can’t hear a thing
wasted now the wanting –
for all I should have said
– the chill is come
to wrap around
my spring

silence partakes
of all that we matter –
streams through the kitchen
and runs down the hall
forgotten the sound
of laughter repenting
ignorance waits
to steal from us all
weak from the struggle
stronger the scars
are folded as wings
paper white –
the last time we noticed
was the first
we were loved
as silent to speak
in defense of the night
were morning left over
love coming down –
as black turns his face
on the dawn
little we know
the end just beginning
as destiny wills us
remember –
move on

numbers
and night birds
roosting in willows
crickets are crooning –
just past the light
echoes of where I was
one time too often
as lowly came home
another someday to bed
and spread to my quilt
hands to remember
touch not so young
I betrayed
kisses the first
will I know – will I ever
how many the last
will become

in the last
that would come
a southern magnolia
dusting the ground with her grace
felled by an instant
of uncharted treason
– who am i now
to remember this place
not far
yet forever
a night more shall be
passed in between
while we sleep
counting to memory
the passage of time
tis there i am yours
and you mine
held to each other
as soft winter rods
leaving our words
for the wind
a reminder of somewhere
we must have been other
to wonder
will wander –
to find us again
as pages
made holy –
this lesson divine
is more than a telling
how two became one
what of tomorrow
the past has betrayed
where will i be
when – at last
you are come
. . .

when bent the oak
to catch the sun –
the slightest truth undone
became of storms
as leaves might sometimes fall
innocence to touch the ground
truth to bear them up
wind to carry
lovers one and all
when moved the rush
of willing waves
cold their fearless cries
as dashed upon the rocks
a centaur fell
green as first the mossy banks
held their secrets long
pressed the way
along the summer swell
blossoms rest
beneath the bark –
pines are lonely here
still reach their bony fingers
toward the light –
tell me there
another tale
of where and when
and whether
we passed before
as shadows of the night

lullabies seldom
we tether by word
just a feeling
of wanting
with not much to say
tiny white stitches
hold us
together –
feathers to fly us
away
will I
sometimes
be remembered
as spring
as blushing to laurel
the ways we became
in joyful surrender –
tell me again
of places you know
where stars
have no names
. . .

who are you
the winter cried –
as green began to gather
taken by surprise
his woolen cloak
who are you
to come for me –
robbing me of stories
white as comfort
lay atop the sheets
who are you
with sharpened bill
to bury in my bosom –
left of times before
one seed remained
a messenger
of almost light –
December
freed of fortunes
now to break me open
with your sun
who are you
to find me here –
knowing (as you know)
tears already melted
– rivers
wear my name
. . .

if ever
i were asked to give –
of everything i own
were sorrows but for tears –
a garden grown
names repeated quietly
indifference to the night
– of touch
the heart reminded
by failing light
would e’er i know
or e’er i dream –
no cause for letting go
of places
i was meant to love you so
lest ashes blow
or winters grace –
some wreath upon my door
or longing fit
as hands i held
before
would e’er i curse
the sure release –
of moments gathered here
of lives to come
but none as this –
so dear
my knees to bruise
i know they will
i fall most every time
repeating words
of gratefulness –
for all was once
(is ever) mine
