stay
as once you promised
when the snow was deeply come
another time when ash
was falling down –
when the wheat was dry
one summer
afternoon
mid July
swarms of honeybees
beyond the barn
stay
let me love you
for this eternity
were these words
the price for hearing
silently
I will listen
til memories
have taken all I am
and filled my empty heart
with destiny

dream
and I will find you here
sleeping in my bed
wrapped in light
wherever longing sits
stay the night
pray me down –
sighs are all I need
to make me yours
would prove your heart
a thief
gather me
wildflowers –
write to me
in stone
speak as if you never
meant to go
burden me a future
a fate we dared believe
sail me home
on waves I cannot see
. . .

what’s your hurry
getting nowhere
I can’t say it matters much
but I sure
wish
you’d ease your leaving
stick around
for one more touch
baby
I’m already missing
another chance for staying on
tho I’ll be safe
inside your crazy –
when nights are dark
years
too long
stick around
I’ll make you love me
tell your fortune nice and slow –
trade a dream
for one more morning
stick around
baby please
don’t go

The morning unfolded slower than usual. I sat on the porch and watched the feeder, or at least when I wasn’t checking my watch. I needed to go; I couldn’t keep my students waiting. Where are they; don’t they know………
When I could justify no further wait, I rose from the swing – just as a tiny yellow bird arrived to the feeder. I have no idea what kind of bird he is……….and in retrospect, I’m fairly certain he didn’t eat. He merely stopped, raised his head and pushed forward a song which must have been crowded in his little body………. Then he was off, sailing beneath the branches, beyond the fence into the field……….disappearing in a blur of wildflowers.
I smiled, took my last sip of coffee, and closed my eyes……..*thank you* There, my blessing………. If nothing else in this life, this is sufficient. This – payment enough for my trials.
I don’t know about you, but for me, life is filled with these reminders of just how divine the way we’ve come. Tho, surely I’ve made some wrong turns, eventually they brought me to this place. A place of understanding and perspective, reality bound with strings of almost but not quite moments.
Is it faith that convinces me it is as it was meant to be, or something more – a nagging recollection of home?
Maybe it is as simple as timing. Perhaps we have to leave in order to really miss a place; to travel to figure out how beloved the starting point was. Maybe destiny has more to do with our dreams than ever our plans, such that we move on auto-pilot sometimes, held in place by a north star we can hardly see.
Pulled back into alignment by a tiny yellow bird.

stay
tho I won’t beg you
one more story
might you tell
one more star
to catch me sleeping
where I fell
one and then
another –
I can’t promise
where they’ll end
til morning breaks –
and there I ask
again
please
and for another
might I give
of all I own
– or save my tears
for leaving lest you go
somewhere
near –
daylight creeps
across an empty bed
hearts prepare for keeping –
words we
left unsaid

further than most
were daring adventure
and wandered I more
to those moments
of flight
truth held by silence
together (this ever)
and yet for the soul –
to remember me now
as writing to places
undone by the rhyme
and what was the vow
worth holding in trust
awaiting again
this reason to come
of somewhere
a life
never planned
awaits in the fold
of venus to clovers –
as love without need
for a time
or division of meaning
what of mine yours –
as the face
now framed
by the sun
in the dawn
where my dreams
are gathered to seed
and I –
but a pillow of stars
