so sure my soul
recalls your breath
tho how and when –
I shudder
forgotten here
where circumstance remains

when pulled into
your memory –
as light within
your light –
as vapor unremembered
by the flame

of moments held
so fragile
I dare not speak aloud
of where
the wonder slept –
between us
now

as strangers
to believing –
of another place we came
familiar once
as golden still
the sun

milesbeyondmybreath

was here before
as yesterdays –
bending words to need
listened as the wind
tomorrow told
of graces we might never earn
truth to never end
the reaching for –
when searching for
our soul

of stories
almost always –
another we could write
pages turned
are held within by shadow
pieced together
promises –
once more might I be
in places
I was born
to love you so

ten thousand
lives –
a moment’s verse
what purpose left undone
vows are kept
our passing to atone
a faraway familiar
as the moon became a bride –
whispers
welcome strangers
back to home

sweetly now
the falling
of lines no longer read
– ringing as
the light unfolds again
reminders
of some secret sun
hummingbirds will tell
of journeys –
our returning
would begin

and in the space
of lifetimes
a moment there becomes
a time before
of longing held at bay
as faith in search
of meaning –
eyes that hold me still
the universe
shall bring us back
this way

meanotherplace

there was a place
I stayed too long
as water softly lifted
swept the bloom away
washed my petals far

from where was meant
a garden someone planted
just for me
a spring bouquet
of gladiola reds
and flutes of yellow promise
tilted by the sun
should have known the rain
would fill them with goodbye

dizzy then with longing
his eager crown to steal
folded green
to goldenrod
surrendered to the flood

there was a place
before I knew you
waited something more
redbud turning purple
wishes climbed beyond
meaning swirled in final dance
none of us could learn
seed denied the longing
gone to home alone

was there a moment then
love thought
we might be saved

I don’t know
it isn’t fair
the pulling things apart
rivers keep no memory
of the sea
overflowed the only banks
had a chance to hold
did I float away
asleep on yester dreams

onceIknew

in the still
that holds your memory
once beginning
of this fate
were candles burned
much longer
than the world
could wait

let silence warm
your tender heart
let children
wear your name
eternities
have passed for me
– tho none
I’ve held
the same

Now and then, I am reminded that the words ‘new’ and ‘improved’ are not always the same.

My father has Parkinson’s. It’s been almost twelve years now, though sometimes I forget (as does he). This year has been hard on him. I think he spent too much time in the garden without water in the Spring, and the effects are wearing. He’s lost weight since March and the jeans I got him last Christmas are falling off.

I’m not the only one to notice. At a doctor’s appointment this past week, he was given three suggestions to make his life better. One was the possibility of getting a hospital bed. He asked if I thought it would help him, and I told him I felt that any benefit would be negated by not sleeping next to my mother. He chuckled in such a way that I knew the same thought had occurred to him.

The second suggestion was that he go to physical therapy. I told him that would be good and reminded him that an old friend of mine who used to go our church worked there. He had forgotten and I am sure he’ll follow-through.

She also recommended he gain some weight. Earlier in the Spring, I suggested he drink Boost (or some version to help with his intake of proteins, etc). He eats good; but as a rule, it’s not foods that will put weight on.  I had also read something about how athletes eat peanut butter to help them gain weight (a heaping tablespoon three or four times a day).

‘I like peanut butter. I loved it when I was a kid, but we didn’t have it much. It was too expensive.’ (my tears)

‘I like it too.’

‘My mama would make biscuits and peanut butter for me to take for lunch. It was about a half mile walk. They never made it to lunch. Most times, they never made it to the school. (little boy laugh) I grew up in another time.’

‘A good time, daddy.’

I’ve never had biscuits with peanut butter, but last night, I made a pan of biscuits. This morning, I had one for breakfast (with peanut butter). It was good. But then again, I couldn’t help but imagine how good it tasted to a little boy with dirty hands and eyes the same as mine.

within these times
of letting go –
love is settled softly
with stories
of before
where I
a dream

dreams melt easy
into places of home
a box in the attic
of truths
holding still
as little green stamps
held to a page
would buy us the heavens
– a treasure of will

feathering
shadows to dance
up above
the ceiling takes life
of her own
ushering thought
into meaning returned
wrapped in a blanket
of old

strange
our repentance
our surrender to more
than a dollar made do
with the coming
to whole
to see without seeing
to know
all we keep
where value is kept
in the attic
of soul

softlynow

within the breath
of now begins
another page I write
with only this
– a memory
of flight

flashing lights
betray the dark
and once again
I follow
the coming back
where I shall find you new

swept along
on lullabies –
sing me home
another
time we passed
of moments –
o so few

prayers awake
as secrets take
the heed
of my confession
to speak aloud
the poetry of trust

gather me
carry me –
will me now
to hurry
– my soul is freed
to wear the name
of love

somewherestillwe are
beyond
the world’s indifference
stars are sworn to light –
as dragonflies
along my window sill
reminders of another once
you held me here this way –
quiet spread
– and all the rest
was still

sacred
as surrender
as one your wilderness –
were storms to pass
tho I be unafraid
of what might be tomorrow come
a mystery resolved –
a sorrow
cleaved apart
by plans we made

wait
another life
for me
within these halls confessed
lest parting be
the promise that you need
beyond the edge of circumstance
now we are again –
find me
in your seeking –
destiny

the stained glass
works of art
garner little sunshine
the marble inside
is dust-dulled

the faithful arrive only
for special ceremonies
in the meantime
there is no money to pay
the janitor’s insurance

fees should he topple
from the ladder twenty feet high
attempting to clean windows
I – like many

worship in distant words
a faraway ritual of my concocting
the private practice of prayer
only moves me —
its physical beauty
does not teach patience

nor how to leap
into the arms of a faith
that tomorrow will
indeed be brighter
because I fold my hands

mouthing alleluia
in time with ancient sacred hymns
that yet touch
a secret place in my soul
