closer now to heaven than the stars, constellations, heart, life, love, smiles, song, soul memory

there is breath
when slumber takes me –
dreams beyond
this dream
constellations
riddled by the night
there are stars
where nothing glitters
but for memory
of blue –
another time
my wishes all for you
there are words
where none are needed
tracks upon my skin
poetry deciding me
to fate
shadows
where the window sits
open to the sun
touch to fill
the silence
before the morning
comes

grace, home, life, love, music, place, reminders of you, song, story, the song remembers when, truth, words

beyond the reach
of needless words
the place
where longing started
a mandolin
to pull me in
silver blue survivors
a fall from grace
tho still I wait
a moment
from all others
a smile within
the memory
of song

. . .

something more ~

Justthissideof sleep

I know the psalms
each word by heart
written somewhere
tho I’ve forgotten why
love resounds
eternally
the best of me
without a note to play
I dare not sing
unburdened bliss –
I give away
the truth
becoming more
than ever someone else
someone still
could say
how it is you made of me
something more than words
something more
within each sweet
refrain

. . .

of morning ~

beyond

who will tell
of morning mists
when I have wandered on
beyond the tempt
of story
into another dawn

who will write
and who will speak
for those denied a voice
who will know
of ways they keep –
by destiny
or choice

what song
the dove
remembers well –
for another one she flies
by touch
a stand of cedars –
holds each star
against the sky

what history
the river lays
along a path of pines
who will bear
their stories home
when light
has tempered mine

closerhome

in the midst of all that matters
least
the sound of pen to page
of breath into an open dream
wings within a cage

a fleeting song
of one to find –
others feel the same
of moments passed within the veil
– love we know by name

beneath the frost

were that I some mistletoe
strung above your bed
a cup of bitter coffee
(long forgot)
survivors of another
time I thought to leave
you begged me wait (the winter)
warmth beneath the frost
I cannot speak
for vows betrayed –
what is (what isn’t) true
how many lifetimes
might I brave –
for one more breath
(of you)

sigh

I wonder
were there rhapsodies
ten thousand years before –
voices meant to carry
across a canyon floor
were there strings
before the bow could sing
an older violin
did dancers sway
in firelight
before the dance began

before the words
came willing
were there whispers
all along –
thought already yielded
unto song

before the books
were written
did lovers understand
the promise held
within another’s hand
the crush of
two hearts beating
as shadows gathered round
a sweeter song
unfolding
without sound

did they know
before the knowing
before their first goodbye
did music stream
unnoticed
like stars
above the night

as violins
of welcome in
were played
then played again
as tender sighs
fell silently
to skin

birds, flight, home, life, light, love, music, mystery, nature, song, the sweet beyond

softly

ten thousand songbirds
swim amidst the trees
echo their songs

a million tiny voices
stir with longing
sympathy
a quiet place where none
exist

so many shadows
forgotten by light
and that which shines
still
cannot hope
to save the rest

starlings soar
music
once an orchestra of many
flutters from the
silence

a cacophony
of trees grieve long
the beauty
was once the song
of songbirds

dreamy

solace
wears a mask of grief
home – a time began
where reaching back
too often
I am found
mesmerized by everything
let my soul embrace
the tender touch
no matter now
how brief

sorrow
knows of other times
of joys
too big
my heart to spare
of wonders
we shall know again –
bliss (o sweet)
forever shared

evening
sits in shadow
where once the morning
sun
was burned
love remains
the proof of life –
beyond the still
a moment
yearned

gravel roads, learning as we go, life, love, postmark, rural, seasons, song, wearing through, you'd think living in Nashville would be worth something

savemedown

was ne’er the first
to let you go
miles on past the promise
you’d stay and I was
sworn to be your baby

a habit
sure to wear you down
a devil in a flannel gown
passions
more than one
to drive you crazy

boots and lace
the dream replaced
kisses not for keeping
but for these
old memories

things we might have said

as proof of heaven
here on earth
graces ne’er
so undeserved
a picture of a picture
on the dresser
of your soul

I’ll make a place
for your returning
dare I keep
these embers burning
reminders
I was sworn
to be your baby
