fleeting

steal the honey
trade my voice –
of Persian poets to linger
rubbing rubber bands
across my rhyme
soothe the beast
of wanting
for wilder –
this retreat
into the nevermore
evading me

of opal song
and rapture willed
beyond this brief existence
uttered soft
a language yet I know
silver words
to cut the gums –
swallowed without question
for where the poison sits
when it is done

mark my way
with berries –
black the pathway ripe
curs’ed be
each memory of briar
dare the day to waking
messy traps
and all –
lure me back with poems
written here

time is but
a squinty eye
staring at the world –
fleeting was his vision
to behold
a history no one could see
paths of fear and fable
blankets pulled aside
to let the cold

listen now
within the greys
shadows sometimes fall
and I shall lean
into your line of love
knowing
as I always have
the tempting taste of sorrows
worn into this wonder
of women wearing wings

will to me
the water
where once the well
went dry –
close the book
when leaving here
but let the cup
remain

caneyfork

in the breath
forever caught between –
they held me in their hands
waiting in the stillness
for the clouds to part
for lungs to memorize the cold –
thunder gathered thick
before the storm

then someone said “amen”
and they let go….

and I drifted
like a psalm –
a puff of smoke
spread like morning fog upon the water
held by the wind
rushed by the waves
to gather me home

forever one with the river
forever one with their song
some sat down
others ran beside
forever one with the current
one with their hands

never having to say goodbye
the river took us all

. . .

and tell me ~

passions

remember this
some sunny day –
hiding in your closet
folded me with jackets
flannel grey
left alone
with all I’ve known
of cooler nights to follow
pieces packed
in cardboard –
suitcase empty now

photographs
of black and white
almost I was leaving
when the best of all
the times
we stumbled on

remember this
the waking up
in sheets of sweetest linen
floating places west
along the ridge
wing’ed crest of falling
pirouette of angels –
forgotten to the sorrows
written here

in ruby red
where slippers fell
the same as ink to Monday
I signed my name
in cursive next to yours
swirls and loops
and hula-hoops –
take of me for chances
a way of walking
somewhere still –
how can I be gone

remember this
the squeaky boards
of sleepless nights returning
circle now the ashes
with the flame
purple light
as passion glows
warm into the marrow
worried not the seeker
unafraid

destinies
as we conceive –
sit the night for supper
folded now our tendencies
are making room
for grace
love remains
in coffee stains –
ribbons to the saucer
lights beyond
where darkness fell
as wishes on the pond

remember this
of everything –
one more kiss (and tell me)
words to disbelieving –
have kept us here
always

sweetestblush

swayed beneath
the mistletoe
my daddy brought me
Sunday –
was wound atop
a cedar tree
and rescued by his bow
was not a place
for ribbons
just the scent
of something magic
a life so sure
of living
would find in me
a kiss

of chance

of reasons
I’ve forgotten
where the stars were crossed
but kept within my blood
their very names

drew a map
from north to south
west across the plains
east as far
the oldest sun shall rise

spoke of times
an ancient place
beyond the reach of knowing
sisters spin
in silken webs
as shadows of disgrace

fated fears
and let’s begin –
truth to resurrect
tho buried now
beneath my holy place

crossed again
the story line –
wherever
west is gone –

pulls against my center
at odds against
the stars

time after time ~

almost touching

starting to see
without sense of the loss
seasons rushed by
nearly blind
caught in the passing
of love into life
forgotten to paths
fell behind

making our way
from pages turned brown –
stories retold now again
passions made true
as embers to burn
than e’er was the flame
to begin

starting
and leaving –
letting us in
long after time
has forgiven our trust
roads cross the same
on the way back to here –
nights never looking
for us

bursted
from light –
at edges unknown
were moments for keeping
this way
dreams bare the promise
we dared never speak
of love –
such a small price
to pay

waiting
for reasons
confessed to the wind –
dearer this fate to allow
remembering wonder
of living relearned –
winters
a part of us now

. . .

without words ~

disturbance

lifetimes becoming
the only way how –
I could know
all I know
in the presence
of now

melodies played
on the strings of my heart
music I lost long ago
purple wallpaper
and who ever sleeps
in blankets the color
of snow

mercy and mayflies
failed me before –
but somewhere they wait
up the night
cause for no worry
and work with no pay –
dreaming
becoming
a winter in flight

signs on the road
are covered with vine
poison –
and something less sweet
berries and beautiful
go now their way –
split by the path of before
we could meet

paradise deals
in permissions to love –
moments when all becomes clear
names burned away
by the warm glow of life
fingers worn down
by the tracing of years

pieces forgotten
stitched into one –
mornings grown close
to the little white lie
told when nothing makes sense
time leaves a scar
on the coming back safe
lifetimes lived o’er –
our lowly defense

tiny gold teaspoons
blossomed to light –
are home to the songs
(without words)
I recite

watching

as eternal
my beholding
to the places still I go
tho pushed between
these edges
sharp and deep
as truth was
held beneath the tides
to bring the drifter home –
and set against
the lover’s sacrifice

as dark
the ways to travel
and worried there alone
of where the stars were leading
(let them lead)
casting long
our tattered nets
into the sweet divide
made between this world
and those beyond

fragile
as the ancient cord
barely seen at all –
tho stretched to hold
of all together now
as one to understanding
let here the thread be cut
as each was sworn
another time
to be

longing
keeps a whisper
to remind us of the rest
when songs were sang –
and hearts
knew only one
garner me
the sacred cup –
let my body rise
beholding to the night
would come for me

. . .

stolen

of these
and no more
I would swear
my allegiance –
and let not another tear fall
would pass unafraid
to the edge of the knife
with courage to suffer
for all

restless to wander
the last one arrived
to places I already know
held as a child
whispered a lover
of somewhere I passed
a long time ago

were doubt
and regret –
of sorrows to sew
shared of a vision unseen
written to secrets
will live in my stead
and curse not
the hours between

my heart
keeps apart –
moments so dear
forever decided
as stars without shame
fell not the distance
of years into light –
or splintered by thought
into flame

in secret
contemplation
the snow is piling high
and every ounce of oil
has burned
to grey

resemblance to our destinies
is surely not our fault
we took such care
to wipe the proof
away

of miracles
there must have been
more than one
remember when
convincing me of something more
than signs

but the book is left
unopened –
I’m sure these aren’t my cards
the joker laughs
til I can scarcely sleep
bury me with potions
leave the window
cracked
and when the birds are roosting
let them be

cut the trees
the young will thrive
and when I’m grey
the best survived
a dozen more
than the summers might
have saved

to winters
we are taken
the hunter without grace
when everything is turned inside
to white –
the sacred lace

the first
to say I’m sorry
the last to say pretend
the fields are bare
and soon the time to go

remembering
the spring is come
as the reddest buds return
I’ll put my apron back
and time will slow

wrapped inside a promise
with nothing much between
the magic lent to circumstance –
the sweet desire
of dreams

cowboys sewn to flannel
each bittersweet regret
shadows fade
to scars the shade of night

illusion of a moment stilled
by fireflies and letters
tender indiscretions
to take the place
of light
