give me to more
than the flush of existence
a song held in place
by the sound of my voice
give me to more than stones
without mercy –
or plans for reliving
a once random choice

much more than words
or promise repeated
back and forth rhyme –
as a measure
of grace
burden and bruises
blisters and babies –
are more now than passing
of time into space

a name seldom spoken
as a thought
might have been –
and sworn to the memory
of love beyond life
a garden
of orchids
jasmine and curses –
as laughter to ring
in the dead still
of night

remembered
forgotten
made more by the journey
and moments no less –
for the ones without say –
where I’ll be missed
as my presence to linger
on paths still becoming
somewhere else –
a new day

much more than a spot
on an outdated map –
or a place without season
another to hold
more than a pocket
for keeping my compass –
or hands
once were holding
found their way
to my soul

know of me ~

come the wave
before the tide –
with memories of the shore
and light when danced
atop the foam –
remembers us no more

past the song
of silence raised –
some fragile dream recalled
when choice to be
so willingly –
would gladly risk it all

stay the night
another day –
shall wake upon the morn
and places
we have parted from
await a time reborn

hold these words
as written – in the warmth
that is your hand
and others –
as the taste of life
once washed upon these sands

know of me
when everything
you thought was real
is changed –
when the winds around you
whisper of the reasons
why we came

dark the wave
adores the moon
as breath beneath the tide
– as rivers flow
the ways to home –
on memories
of the light

winters unforgiving ~

came I here before daylight
alone with this sunrise
to watch the world
made new again –
and brushed across
the sky

more than once
was here I stayed
and woke
beyond the light
to places I had dreamed of
remembered to the night

I wondered
long to chances passed
and turns of wistful fate
of beauty
still becoming –
and I a moment late

tho not the first
I thought to times
my faith was sorely bent
to paths I might have taken home
and roads of good intent

how many dawns
spent looking back
without power to change a thing
to winters unforgiving
awaiting proof
of spring

as we are ~

were ever the distance
from then into now
be more than one lifetime
of living allowed
a sign (without warning)
another sweet smile
of grace in the crossing
as mile welcomes mile

who would know
lest we tell them
of lifetimes before
of living left over
by love – loving more
of a place so much richer
than as this – as we are
given not to a city
a breath or a star

more than name
less than ever
we shall pass – even so
not for years to be counted
or blessings bestowed
would love be constrained
to a time or a place
or touch be recalled
as a fleeting embrace

can it be
I can see
even more – that I feel
what of words rarely spoken
are no less what is real
crossed the night
sans the distance
comes as thought – not so far
can it be I am present
in the places you are

will these voices be lost
to the ages (and then)
might we wake from this dream
remembering when
as will be – it was written
long before we were one
love is more than a moment
to the place
we become

settled in ~

for every time
I wandered here –
to make myself anew
when settled in
with not a care at all
turned to places felt the same –
so sure I’d find my other
balanced as an august
wing to rise

kept the pace
I’d meant to lose –
and walked the wrong side over
passed beneath a bough
of winter shade
remembering another time
we traveled this beginning
and crossed into a place
we couldn’t stay

promise held
as bittersweet
beneath the stubborn tongue
now and then as poison to resign
were other times
regarded truth
far more than understanding –
else lovers sit unnoticed
by the song

worry not for evidence
of ages I have lost –
tho suffered more
than e’er my verse could pay
as births entwined
tho for a while –
were hastened by surrender
to heal of aching hearts
beneath the pain

if e’er again
my journey pass –
as solace to the dreamer
or poems rest
with hands I used to know
give to prayer these passages –
of everafter coming
a long way back
to finding me –
along familiar roads

o daddy ~

was the first
of many princesses –
given faith to wander
and drew the map
would keep me
to his hands

mirrored
by the light beyond –
peace beyond the passing
language of another life
here to understand

of choices mine
the birth to be –
within the chosen hour
and held the two together –
as destiny entwined

this mystery
becoming –
none could tell
and few could see
even those who know me well
are missing me

fearless heart
awakened
by rain upon the roof –
and signs beyond the edge
where night was set

hands to hold
within the still –
mere moments fall away
in giving back
of all I’ve loved
today

get me back ~

lifetimes more
somewhere I know
I left you broken (left you blue)
fortune raised to falling light –
into these arms
of wishes true

wore your tears
against my heart
eighty years and not a one –
you weren’t a part
of me (becoming)
– jealous moon
of curs’ed sun

found a note
you left behind –
and pinned your voice
inside my sleeve
for every time
I heard your name
my breath was stopped
for love (to grieve)

was ever I
to feel this way –
or given grace
again somewhere
(take me back) into this life –
another day
to find you there

dare you break
of ties so frail –
as final payment lingers due
wilted roses
broken fence
and miles between
(I never knew)

where you’d be
this time around –
Kentucky roads
split north and south
the same old stars –
(the same sweet view)
and all the rest
forgotten now

once enough
forever still –
words are folded
(you can’t see)
pages rub (my memory raw)
as night returns
your love
to me

this way ~

meet me
where the sunrise
burns dreams
into the waking –
yellow as the roses
yesterday

were begged forgiveness
fell apart –
as petals on the counter
before the words were gone
and truth betrayed

meet me
where the waters roll
backwards to the glaciers
as cold to polish black
the river rocks

dream
and tell me
where I was
before you found me waiting
still within the first to rise
breath undone
by light

save for me
the final dance
though I am not a dancer
practiced more to verse
than e’er to sway
of arms around me
reaching
to keep my heart aloft –
hands to hold
as wishes tucked away

a picture postcard
kept in place
by something more becoming
for years I will remember you
this way
constellations shining
in the light behind your eyes

evermore resounding
in words we couldn’t say

colors ~

as soft the wind
the grasses lure
and golden flows the river
swayed against the backs
of skyward glance

such it is
the calm retreat
of thought before emotion
as voice remembered
after words
have gone

in the silence
do you listen
e’er your name be spoken here
or prayed the night
in private –
echoes falling
just as clear

as leaves
restore a blanket
spun to ribbons
for my hair –
will breezes blow
our truth to know
in pieces
everywhere

he couldn’t say ~

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain
