within the last
– an echo
of every time before
a moment left
where there will be
no more
no sorrow spared
by leaving
no midnight come away
laugher spilled
in silence sealed
always
no talk about forever
– it is come
my hopes to steal
verses meant
this broken heart
to heal
no one more day
to linger
in shadows set to stone
– what future lies
in all of love
I’ve known
became
of my confessions
but one
and then no more
within my last –
a whisper
of every life before

sweet
the pull
of letting go
another time
remembered –
as soft the winds
to carry me
away
into the breath
tomorrow holds
a bit
of ne’er forgotten
holds me still
– a star
within the frey
of curtains
to the window drawn
blankets
pulled around
as secrets echoed
fondly
by the night
memory for holding
– lest I keep
the best of these
beyond the reach
of love
into the light

autumn winds
have blown a course
I never once imagined
lines already lost
beneath
the sand
constellations
shifted
beyond the grievous moon
turning from my place
to watch the band
removed
from all the wishing
where yet
an evening falls
distance closing –
echoes touching down
of words
I will remember
who will know them best
– the long night
laying words
without a sound
racing toward another
place I loved
the same –
was here I knew
tho eyes were closed
so tight
believing in
forever –
a life I might have known
had reason
not resolved my heart
to flight

worried
for the ways ahead
a pathway through the dark
where whispers
surely gather
me to home
memories
and might have beens
grace in stories
written
drawn upon my heart
by places known
lay for me
a softer place
just beyond the winter
love is come
and I
resolved to these
the way was mine
as life became
more my soul shall carry
grieving all
shall bring me
to my knees
tho surely this
for all I keep –
the worth
is worth the weighting
for just beyond
are spirits bound
by truth
reminders of forever
one more day
where spring endures
while here I kneel
– grateful for
each bruise

within the reborn
dust of earth –
within these gentle grasses
whispers hide
as secrets gathered all
life begins
anew I find –
most every day awakens
to take my breath
before the evening call
verses read
to soothe the soul –
while memory – her mother
lies awake the night
to hear us breathe
quiet as the covenant
was made
before this passing
prayers are lost
– and still to love
we cleave
. . .

you stayed away
much longer than you meant
but I was waiting
near the window
(you could see me from the road)
and everything was still
the same
though years have bent us both
but something there
is just as it had been (before)
tho moments keep no pictures
of the past
I’d thought a time or two
of where you might have gone
did you make it to that diner
stayed up all night long
(to dance)
what engine held you closer
than I ever thought
I could
did you long for me
(forgiveness)
beneath a desert moon
I remember hearing
somewhere
you had lost your faith
and for nights
I prayed and worried of the road before
whene’er a storm would come
I’d speak your name (aloud)
and stare out at the darkness
everywhere
(and wondering)
it’s been a while
the place don’t look the same
(as then)
the orchard fell a year or so ago
the old porch swing
still sways (beneath the weight of memory)
there’s some things I don’t say
(I wish I could)
come inside
I’ll get some coffee brewing
what pride I may have had
was lost in yesterday
there are latches need replacing
and fields now gone (to seed)
I moved the bed
much closer to the window
I can lie awake
and count the stars
(you gave)
nothing’s changed
tho time has passed
(winters without asking)
no need to say
I’ve never locked the door
some might call me crazy
but most are gone from here
most all my life
I’ve waited for this day
you stayed away
much longer than you meant

quietly come
it is I
to your light
so little afraid –
resigned
to become
more in the passing
of truth into truth
ways to the weight
permission allows
kneeling
before
against
as within
an altar already made
of cypress and sorrows
iron and bone
scars worn to rope
for holding me on
breathless beginning
was come
of an end
when all had seemed lost –
one light drew me
home
