howcouldyouknow

for what
was life becoming –
when for this one I yearned
a breath between forevers –
made sweet the souls
return

a kiss
I scarce remember
once cooled upon my lips –
saved into my being
as proof of love
like this

time rests
beneath the cedars –
and pulls against the moon
resolving all we dared
to touch –
yet leaving way
too soon

. . .

now as then ~

to this

from this beginning
now as then
we guard the truth with love
forgetting all we knew before –
were life
not full enough

as once we were –
a promise made
sealed within a kiss
forsaken all the days
between –
returned the heart
to this

. . .

another now ~

a name upon my lips, kiss, life, love, memory, promise, sometimes, soul learning, time, truth, words

remember

the fated card
of once again –
a place where love could be
with strength of will
the hope of time –
is gifted back
to me

want dissolved
is still recalled
as clear was then –
another now
defined by words
I do not know –
by graces I allow

someday –
a fleeting promise
as tender was a kiss
burned into my memory –
as a name
upon my lips

. . .

forever

when first you knew
to touch me here
I was helpless
to resist
did you realize
when you closed my eyes
as barter
for a kiss
did you name the stars
for nights like this
or wonder
for lives between
renewed to find
the way we came –
to be
what love would be

. . .

mornings like this ~

softlyhere

my heart’s
gentle strumming
wakes me at two –
with reminders of all
I had meaning
to do

early
as daybreak
evening did fall
and I like a sinner –
brought down
by it all

as I lay awake
dreaming
a smile finds my lips –
prayer
saved for mornings
like this

. . .

another first ~

gathered mine

the first kiss
your last goodbye
held as mine
‘neath jealous skies
where truth was sealed
by wordless sighs
lies
too old
to remember

the way we came
from roads before
with want for none
but grace for more –
than a hand could hold
a heart would store
in boxes old
and bursting

given place
a rite of rest
one promise sweet
tho unconfessed
with all I am –
with nothing less
than a song
you taught me
whisper

into the still
surrounding now
when by ten thousand
deaths
I vow
another breath
somewhere
somehow
in fields by heaven
seeded

another first
‘neath amber skies
where angels dance
by firelight
where truth was sealed
by wordless sighs –
lies
too old
to remember

. . .

Author’s Note: Pieces of this have haunted me over the last couple weeks. Not long ago, I wandered to an old road not far from where I grew up. I could see clearly that an industrial park was hedging bets on every spare inch of land. But on another day (another life), the trees barely parted for the lane, and beyond was a field deep with wheat and dreams. I don’t know whether ‘parking’ is a southern thing or not. I’d hate to think that we’re the only ones with an appreciation for summer nights on a lacey quilt – witnesses to heaven beneath a blanket of stars.

belonging

for another day
a lifetime rent –
for wishes undenied
one last kiss –
one verse upon my brow
too many more
than I endured
to save for any less –
the way I came
much sweeter than before

I only dreamed
to finish here –
until the dying came
until my waiting freed
one more goodbye
– will then I dare
remembrance
of things I might have changed
had winter passed
with not so harsh
a claim

alone

moonlight glows
ruby red
upon these paths of clay
a giant sleeps
beneath the coming day
dreams are without pardon –
a name upon my lips
reminds me of a lifetime
I surrendered
for a kiss

unknown

whisper light
into my heart –
breathe against my breast
write your verses tender as a sigh
low that I might harken
when nights to lonely fall
as stars beneath
an ancient heaven
sprawl

speak
so only I can hear –
make your story mine
relearning truth
from kisses –
life where
souls entwine

rebirth

I won’t need you
when the sun has passed
into another
sleepless night –
where shadows fall
and nightbirds
grieve the day

I won’t need
the time you gifted
or a memory to curse
when twilight burns
and stars
the dark betray

I won’t need you
when tomorrow
has been washed into the past
on shores
I never wandered –
forgotten
why we came

I won’t need you
when this life is gone
and all I’ve left
is bone –
and cooler now
the lips that held
your name

. . .
