how am I to wonder
and still
the morning comes
fresh as tears
to grace the baby green
petals begged to open
sleepy eyes awake
eager now to hear
the story told

of distant fields
and gardens fair –
winded wills and worry –
forests drawn in aprons
of a song
played within the stillness
of one more time
I’ve gone
far beyond the touch
that is the dawn

how is now
I’ve traveled
beyond the reach of dreams –
beyond the safe abode
of tethered night
walked with stars
and tripped my way
into another light –
brushed aside the veil
to free my soul

for moments yet
becoming –
an early morning dew
as last year’s rain
before the crops came in
memories of something more
time and roads
retraveled
– the ways to you
remembered
by the wind

letting go
as I have known –
forsaken now to listen
bells are ringing somewhere –
I can hear
water falling –
lifetimes left
I promised once to find
– a place beyond the night
I hold you near

were it so
the past is not
with tales
of one more season –
years have passed
and still love wakes my bones
surrender claims
the deepest sleep
walls of purple paper –
one more sin
for living to atone

rumors going
round –
someone noticed love
– but couldn’t say
for sure
it wasn’t less

wearing clothes
that someone chose –
spoke when spoken to
holding yet to reasons
unconfessed

wrapped in dreams
or so it seemed –
flowers perfumed so
held to names
and places
was thought where love
should go

but somewhere here
are others still
who tell of love’s demise
was rocked
on planks of cedar
beneath uneven skies

gave a heart
of compass –
would point the ways
to home
forgotten now
the weight of love –
is never waited
long

come the evening
sweet and blue –
as windswept through the window
would carry me
to worlds beyond the words
beyond the reach
of verses
honeysuckle vine –
beyond the reach
of wanderers
the moon

felt the grace
of falling –
somewhere still I wait
as sunlight
lemon kissed
beyond the shade
were petals spent
in knowing
where the light has gone
morning sits
the night with me
again

long rewritten –
to a page
that won’t be kept
secrets folded soft
into the crease
lines to rub
where ink gave out –
fingers without memory
trace the ragged edge
of yesterday

sweet the sound
of almost sung –
names
and dates
and places
sunlight burning
tender through the pines
washes now
the winter –
a moment yet we stay
turned the bed
to face the southern
skies

letters
I’ve been writing
saved my name a place –
walked between my dreams
a mile with you
worried not
the path to choose
or what of time shall fill –

a story
meant for telling
kept for me
the end

tied with dimestore string
proof
of someplace sweeter
another name for wearing
fit the same

as stockings
hats
and easter shoes
a blushing bride all over
reminded of a right
before her spring

within a silence
I’d forgotten how it felt –
strained against another
left unsaid

taken
by forever dreams
beyond my lover tears
fated list I made
for why I was

stayed behind –
kept inside
sitting with my sadness
baking bread
and singing to the night

circles drawn
to restlessness –
let me be the longer
folded into joy
the storms betrayed

echoes of a sorrow
cross the darkest sea –
safe within
the drowning –
reminders now to swim

forever came –
as close as night
to pasture
reflecting life

I lie awake
and listen –

beginning –
eternity is rolled
upon her side
she listens as I whisper
songs she thought

a longing –
was nursed
a hungry cat
and edges there were left
to tell the world
of where the end
was ending –
who would tend the grass
and where the towels
were folded
with the grey

a rocking chair
and angry rings
to curse an ugly table
a crystal bowl
would hold your habits
well –
reminders of another
took my breath
for supper –
turned the bed
and never said
a thing

verses read
all over –
some I can’t pretend
are meant to hold
another fool
as I
forgotten to a season
passed me through
November –
cooled my brow
and left my longing
fire
