purple dreams

whatever now
the thought has been
that I might die the winter –
and go to sleep
beneath the frigid wind
warmed below
an icy shawl –
tears would never melt
or blossoms see
their way again
to grow

of princes come
for me before –
and waited long this night
returning me a path
I’d never been
worn in places
some would say
they saw me fly one morning –
held within a stream
of northern lights

iris stands
two hundred strong –
naked in surrender
as dreaming
burst to life
another day
when words were fallen
easily –
as whispers to the dawn
withholding yet a place
to lay me down

. . .

ways by which we came ~

truth

were consequence
our one defense –
for ways by which we came
into the revelation
of our will

sing of me
when rivers fret –
your final journey home
were there my name –
in silence lingers
still

forgiven this
surrender –
to another truth I seek
glowed beyond the restlessness
of night –

carved me by the willow
into the evergreen
forsaken not the message
of your light

sit me down
in blossoms –
the color of your song
and wrestle me
to life within your lead

lay me bare
to lessons –
of living to discern
as sweet
the fall of berries
crushed by need

. . .

another ~

unto

if I were born
another place –
and never heard your name
or memorized the music
of your voice
would the night arrive
unnoticed
as wings above the pines
would I leave my prayers
for coming back
behind

if I were loved
some other way –
and stayed my will to know
of lessons almost ended
by my days
would lips be sealed
and not for one –
remembered as a kiss
buried with the memory
of refrain

if I were here
some other day –
familiar comprehension
as words to scatter
ashes to the wind
the failsafe of forever
eternity begins
within a dream
another fragile death

folded to a locket
buried with my sins –
reminders fall
around me
in the dark
verses haunt the pages
wherein another waits
held against a name

I dare not say

. . .

til I say ~

filled

they warned me once
of dying –
before my time was come
of children
without mothers –
polished stone

of storms
were passed
before my birth –
carved into my canyons
a story
not yet over
til I say

tis luxury
in heartache –
precious scars
worth bleeding for –
a blessing come
for writing
in the dark

I’ve buried want
for reason –
broke the bed
and cut my hair –
gave favor
to the love
that had no home

pages bending over
lest I read them more
and more –
forsaken by
their meaning
to pretend

summer sweat
and winter rye –
some may say they knew
of vows I took
repenting –
for lifetimes passed
too soon

they warned me once
of dying –

. . .

less afraid ~

whispers

last night
forever dreamed
and I awoke
to ancient fields
less afraid
of dying yet to know
rehearsing lines –
traced me back
the way I meant to go
sewn into my pocket
by ascent

blackbirds
thick
were circling
graces into light
home the heart to roost
amid the flame
long the time
for moving on –
shadows dancing still –
remembering
a bluer smoke
by name

morning brings
another cup
evidence of falling –
from places
not so far
as nothing changed
sleepy eyes
alert for signs
in every leaf – a lesson
left beneath
my window
another dream
awakes

. . .

remains ~

stone

were left mine
to give
a place on your skin
one light
when the dark
gathers ’round
were time emptied mercy
as passing into
til only now faintly
my call

were ne’er mine
to barter
yet still might I plea
one selfish restraint
to forgive
counted not twice
the days in between
or burdened my tongue
with your name

had I but choices
so few to regard
were come of my will
not regret
direction decided by moments
so dear
grace for the journey
enough

were stars left
for wishing
would cleave from the black
the last –
else forever be gone
and I without measure
or means to recall
love never spoken
the same

regarding the rest
of somewhere I know
lifetimes are weighted and still
verses revised
shall sit you the night –
a memory of love
to remain

. . .

scattered graces ~

close enough

of retracing
scattered graces –
storms clouds gather me around
blackened feathers
silken wages –
haunt the soul
with not a sound

who would know
 of those to listen –
where you are
tho once for me –
I knew you best
I loved you better
but for the man you couldn’t be

clearer eyes
persuade the heavens
counted tulips through the fire
 given love
the grace for living –
sweet the touch
beyond desire

are you now
tho who can tell me
what of faith
when life is past –

was the love I knew becoming
ever real or just
my last

. . .

forever (more) ~

scattered

were coming back more
than asked of forgiveness –
no one would blame me
for running (away)
picking through pieces
were left of the ruins –
fashioned to story
with nothing to say

longer the leaving
than ever I wanted
destiny cooled in a cup
by the sink
wishes and wondering
(how will I know you)
when lost are these verses
of breathing to ink

you and your highways
while I – to the back roads
dust on your face
are briars (my own)
willed to remember
nights without shadow
reach me
(to teach me)
another way home

a place on the map
a weathered remembrance
heaven and earth
were switched in our stead
light streamed
as moments of angels
(and demons)
pressed in our pressing –
and stored ‘neath the bed

tho winds
yet were blowing
to seasons (unnamed)
by graces retracing
ten thousand (too few)
sunrise decided
in our rush to discover
time without memory
of (just) passing through

leave me the river
and take of your oceans
I’ll keep the lantern
(and give you the sun)
where are the stones
we laid on tomorrow –
coming back sweeter
into love
(we’ve become)

. . .

fragile eternity

beyond
these distractions
of pillar and pause
easy financing
of all we could want –
will finds a way
in the silence for speaking

yet muffled the voice
of the heart

wrapped in confusion
experience worn –
each to its own time and place
fated regard of
temporal illusion –

were not for the seeing
we saw

wasted as time
stole away with the clock
woke but a moment
too late
counting possessions
from memory they were
and swore not to dreaming
again

lest something
be missing
was not on our list
how could forever be gone
when kept on the shelf
with things
we have not –

lifetimes forgotten
to live

close ~

rails

of mysteries
unraveled –
hours into lives
leaving naught a sign
of where we were
rings into an aged oak
rails no longer sing –
winking now to sails
beyond the dark

evidence of faraway
sits in rust and briar –
almost gone
and who is left to tell
dusty roads
and no one else
knows the ways we came
to understand
truths another held

as pieces
of forever –
fold into the apron
stones are falling
someone let them in
doors to squeak
against the hinge
hold my hand
and sway

lunas tease the seeker
from the din

bittersweet
the ancient hymm
sang us once to death
as melody laid soft
upon the snow –
fleeting life
remembering the reasons
come again

close the night
and lets pretend
we know
