memory of me ~

of pages
I can’t keep apart
for too long
at a time
when thought of moments
talking to the night
familiar as these counted sheets
mountain breeze
between them
ran my hands along
a forgotten
stretch of life

– and married there
a scribe
before the veil had come
couldn’t know of this
the story we would write

flesh to burn
and I don’t know your name

familiar taste
of sunlight spilling
lazy through the clouds
as you were there
and I as truth began

a reader wants
a poet loves
might I be less
than either
changed into a promise
none could speak

tho sweated to a page
(for tracing)
words to resurrect
each far away
is haunted
by your touch

as stillness sits
beside my bed
reading me a story
e’er I would choose
some different
yet to be
or beg to breath this moment
moonlight falls anew
softer now
the memory
of me

made to one ~

forget me the season
now given to memory
much more than I keep
lest I touch to the flame
and run with my body on fire

stir not to ember
the last of those kisses
but to cool
even now
I can’t speak of them here

or recall to becoming
the light pouring in
were we ever not here
in this place of forgiveness
had I known
(did I know) all along

the past would not pass
without us to leave it
and who would be fooled
would be cheated
by such

as stays now
the secrets of living undone
by the one I thought not
in the going unto
and a place far enough
from the one I lay down

as names given more
to the moon
did I know (couldn’t know)
of the sweetest embrace
and hands (made to one)
would not do

already my faith
to be worried (away)
as a time not so long
in the space of a breath
much more letting go
scarlet threads
(wear me knot)

are forever
reweaving
forget me no more
as breath (once returned)
to your soul

I shall be
no more than verse
no more than thought dispersed –
an empty page
to curse
as navy blue to linen –
carbon to the grail
margins now become
the truth I live

taunt me not with destinies
and nights
I could not sleep –
but stayed awake to dream
else words become –
a testament to passing
deliverance from death
longing as a substitute
for life

of places where you live –
none the more
than in my heart
with a window to the world
that is my dream

verses tied with pieces
of tomorrow’s wiser sun
as the fireflies came
crying to the sill –
begging me to go
beyond the wood

to mountains
brushed with ashes –
softly fell a whisper
was settled neath the porch
of standing still

for lifetimes (did I know)
when wished the brightest star
to bring you safely
to remember –
the destiny of thought
to bring you home –

the way of spring
of secret paths
worn into november
touch the same as breezes
wrapped a favored song –
as rain against the tin roof
of my soul –

laughter spinning stories
of a line or two we wrote –
before the storm
was settled in our bones

of all the places
you remain –
this one –
my longing stills
sometimes late at night –
I hear you sing

glass to wear ~

of fairytales
I’ve heard them say
there is no prince returning –
dare I let my braid
down by the wall –

where once (a summer)
there you stood
with nowhere else to wander
awaiting for our story
to unfold

remember how it all seemed
more (than we could
make it happen) –
and dreamed I once or twice
of far aways

castles (meant for merlin)
camelot of sorts –
bridges fell across
my evermore

closed my eyes
and gave a wish –
to stars beyond the dipper
lay me down –
give me glass to wear

let me sleep
ten thousand years
if there your kiss will find me
standing at the window
where you wait

same as I ~

in the canyon of my soul
you are echoes born of love
and secret told
for centuries anew –
as love remains a reason
for believing life is more
than sighs resolved
to catch the universe
there I know
and there are you –
the same as I within
a mystery repeating us
the place becoming now –
a road without an end
is just beginning
lilacs sing of magic
in the pines

wishing well ~

came a thief
who took the mountain
took away the peaceful stream
gave a silver plated nickel –
to the beggar
for his dreams

took the ways for which we wandered
left us nothing for the fight
took the heart (was once so tender)
pulled it (pleading)
from the light

was a thief
who took of pardons –
spoke in tongues (we strained to hear)
promised wine (a crystal fountain)
somewhere far
(not far from here)

spoke of highways
thru the heavens –
told of trust beyond the veil
sold us courage from a bottle
jaded cup (a wishing well)

from those moments
came another –
one more chance to turn away
another dollar for our wishes
stars we loved –
at once betrayed

for the hope of more
than vision –
righteous want
for more than will
took the last of mortal conscience
lifetimes passed us –
standing still

came a thief
in prophet’s clothing –
golden robes (of fated sun)
took of breath –
the soul’s impression
left behind the empty one

north ~

beyond the place you tary
in the ribbons worn by pain –
and the scars I love
I kiss them in my dreams
you come to me
and I to you –
in perfect imperfection
to touch the words we’ve given
jasper wings
to know of north
you surely are –
home within my longing
as sparrows rush the night
and sense the way
the same as these
were given you –
hands to trace you backward
winds to sail
and I your name to hear
dream of me in fields of clover
call for me that way
and I shall walk on oceans
to your door
to lay against the crooked boards
that rise to give you reason
touched against the places
of your love

cleave my heart ~

had I strength
for understanding
what was meant of what was said –
had I courage (more demanding)
might I shed a tear instead
might I shatter
in submission –
plead my case to kinder ears
give of all (I have not answer)
what of truth has brought me here

the deepest night
deceives the shadows –
stardust falling from my hair
who was I (how could you know me)
a place of light
unnoticed there
dare I speak of breath so holy
let me not my faith deceive –
come the answers to the questions –
for moments still
as I believe

tis who I am –
the dreamer seeking
proof of love – the power to save
a gentle hand
(as I remember) –
beg me not to turn away
from that bright flame
within the sorrows –
taking more than I can give
blossoms once forgot (a garden)
grows beyond the will
to live

lay me down
without confession –
drive the nails where none can see
bite the tongue
if e’er shall utter –
there my name so tenderly
take the blood – take the telling
I shall not move
from this sweet gale
give me faith to overflowing
for one I knew
(I knew so well)

had I sense
to stay this mercy –
to raise my flag – at last
resigned
to cleave my heart
from all that matters –
and pledge my pen to hapless rhyme
verses meant to stay the ages
stretched between –
before and now
love endures (within my being)
as nothing less
would grace allow
