last i remember
the stars had no names
and a wild endless blue
was your name
on my lips
surrender made do
with the past
it is gone
like a wave built of clouds
where our dreams
linger on
forty
and something more wondrous
than this
than years folded soft
on the night
last i was taken
you found me somehow
out past the waves
where stars
are allowed
pointed
and endless
cradled by blue
– fate
rearranged
by your hands

never worried
for the leaving –
fences broken
(should i care)
for days
beyond the harvest –
without want
to meet us there

no fated
circumstances –
would have me leave
the gate ajar
had i known
you were missing –
i might have wondered
(where you are)

had i slept
beneath the window –
beside a memory of us
washed my sheets
til they surrendered
the world
our dreams (forgot)

nights
became
a bed of whispers –
trading truths
i couldn’t hold
tempted wings
unfurling presence
across the spring
(across the snow)

we were here
once before –
no way
to ever doubt it
there was light
that set you burning
a flame
i fell into

we were here
almost forever
the moment i was saved
honest as the day –
the day
we came
no way around
the way you made me
certain

we were here
tho i’ve forgotten
where we ever went astray
i’m forgiving
of the fate
that took you back –
fate that left me searching
for a time
we were here
gathered up in words
we couldn’t say

for this moment
i traveled –
with rocks in my shoes
fate unrelenting
a path stretched before
to find you
remembered
a love still to learn
as the barn
stood ten thousand days more

for this
i was tempted
in this i found grace
as witness to heaven –
is all that i know
what was come of a promise
to wait
for you here
as saved from my birth
to be written
below

fell from the ethers
to altar my way
stolen from dreams –
my reluctance
to move
forward and backward
as cedars bent low
a kiss
awaiting memories
of you

from places
love was started –
without want
for something more
than a hand to hold
a tender want
to feed –
was there
when first you understood
how wrong a right
could be
how hands once
open wide
could close a door

from places
long forsaken
someone learns
to speak our name
as stories spin
life begins
from destinies untold –
lines are crossed
no going back
on this returning home
want no longer
waiting us –
another hand
to hold

it’s that time of year
orange bleeds
to fill an empty stand
leaves are falling
i want
nothing more
than to take your hand
lead you through
the yellow
crimson gold
were tennessee
still playing rocky top
i’d take of every chance
to beg you stay
one more fall –
saturday
with me
i’d take of evermore
to beg you stay
when alabama comes
to tennessee

it rained
and i was carried
out beyond the gate –
beneath the trees
an ocean
to embrace
i thought of you
another spring
and how it felt
to sail
beyond the reach
of sailors –
silver tides
it rained
and i remembered
nights where
in your arms
a pounding on the roof
whispers caught
between a moment
fell into
and waking far away
with only these
reminders
of the rain

another leaf to press
spinning once

and how it was you came

was everything
and you
the one denied
oceans
seas
rivers
someone knew
before was i

you waited
my remembrance
of surrender
just this way
leaving every season
to confess
ages fell between
here am i
as once before –
take of me forever
take of me
the rest
