heaven

angels come
as flight to find
eager to my heaven
silken feathers
whispering a dream
swelled within the beauty
of lonesome lullabys
comes when still
my eyes are closed
in sleep

tell me then
of faraways –
a memory I’m missing
fingers float
across my violin
voices of ten thousand
ancient choirs now ascending
tiptoe as the light
where night
has been

measured sway
of hands to time –
sacred truth awaking
escaped from once
we were –
already one
signs along the journey
will to understand
dreamed
as you were dreaming me –
angels we become

fleeting

steal the honey
trade my voice –
of Persian poets to linger
rubbing rubber bands
across my rhyme
soothe the beast
of wanting
for wilder –
this retreat
into the nevermore
evading me

of opal song
and rapture willed
beyond this brief existence
uttered soft
a language yet I know
silver words
to cut the gums –
swallowed without question
for where the poison sits
when it is done

mark my way
with berries –
black the pathway ripe
curs’ed be
each memory of briar
dare the day to waking
messy traps
and all –
lure me back with poems
written here

time is but
a squinty eye
staring at the world –
fleeting was his vision
to behold
a history no one could see
paths of fear and fable
blankets pulled aside
to let the cold

listen now
within the greys
shadows sometimes fall
and I shall lean
into your line of love
knowing
as I always have
the tempting taste of sorrows
worn into this wonder
of women wearing wings

will to me
the water
where once the well
went dry –
close the book
when leaving here
but let the cup
remain

painted yellow ~

psalms91

reason grows in patches
fated disarray
as bent into the shade
misunderstood

of summers
were there e’er enough
to make up for the chill
breezes unrelenting
do they know

daisies painted
yellow –
mystery revealed
as glories strain
the steeple every time

lessons
spent on tenderness
tore apart the past
saved upon the tongue
another name

hid within
the oldest psalm –
a secret yet unknown
message from a heart
no longer sung

pen to page
whate’er was lost
shall find us here again –
taken by a sigh
into the sun

. . .

drifting

had I known the way
to know you then –
or knew myself
much more –
than petals almost crushed
beneath my will

as lanterns burned
beyond the wick
destinies unfolding –
beyond the letting on
are holding still

of sacrifice
uncertain
was a time
you came to me
dreaming –
still just dreaming
of today

fragile tales
of how we were –
and where the trees
were young –
how many lives
remembered me
that way

on wishing
there was one dark night
we slept beneath the cedars
and woke
before the starlings
took to air

caught within
their flutter
was a moment
of divine –
moonlight mourned our leaving
stars were in my hair

canopy of evergreen
tapestry of truth –
for where the forest bends
and words concede

shadows shift
against the still
as memories return
–  echoes fill the night
with falling leaves

story

eternity
was gifted me
this morning
just at dawn –
when reason floated
pearl against the light
pastel pages
fluttering
as books were put away
stories almost ended
now begin

between the place
of getting by –
and knowing the unknown
pathways open wide
to worlds apart
fragile as a robin breath
pushed into the day –
as somewhere now
revival hymns
are played

stones
three hundred forty two
around the barn
and back
sorted once by size
and now by time
measured as girl to grow
knee-high to the mountain –
sings (tho she can’t sing)
of holding on

beauty keeps
a patch of grace –
queen anne’s lace and lilac
sheets are frozen stiff
upon the line –
winds are blowing
cool across these memories
of May –
tender now the calling
back to spring

. . .

hereafter ~

soft as a snowflake
whispers of june –
and the buzz on the line
cicadas befriend –placeholder
ask me of rivers
and mountains retreating –
nights filled with story
of places we’ve been

still as the now
to eternity walking –
in beat up old boots
the color of hay
reasons to linger
for the wait of hereafter –
will stars in your eyes
steal my leaving
away

whiskey and wishes
three kinds of favor –
when wrapped in the warmth
of forever somewhere
sweetest refrain
for the coming back only
if ever I would –
was for wonder
to share

hunters and sisters
the universe listens –
wilderness swirls
in freckles of light
ripples of whatever truth
we are making –
rolls ‘neath the gate
in search of the night

luther2011

red tail glides
across the grey –
steely force to wander
silent as a brush
of ancient blues
curves against my coffee cup
whispers of the moon
hiding just beyond
the cedar line

miracle of miracles
who am I to choose
between the life I know
the one I am –
fragrant as wisteria
blooms beneath the frost
wishes for December
nothing more –

beauty plays
within the light
of one more morning after
glows within the essence
evermore
barefoot girl
and virgin snow –
who will find me missing
left as tracks
divine into the wool

. . .

perilous

fortune
never lasts for long
swirling in my cup
chamomile
and curses each goodbye
leaves
and lockets
someone breathed
into a braid of wishes
lilac blooms
would haunt the snow
with briar
by and by

stories
I can ne’er decide
where the past was ended
chapter twenty two
and still I grieve
ashes hold the only proof
letters e’er were written –
secrets kept in
cedar –
fade but never leave

miracle
of almost when
deeper love becoming
fragile as a web
of spinner’s lace
ribbons never lasted long
tied
untied –
remembered
moments of surrender
burdened not by place

sentiment
of bursting hearts –
souls the night comes raining
lanterns of the eastern sky
heaven follows near
as one before
the garden grew
from mystery and maybes
lights along the headboard
ashes falling here

and tell me ~

passions

remember this
some sunny day –
hiding in your closet
folded me with jackets
flannel grey
left alone
with all I’ve known
of cooler nights to follow
pieces packed
in cardboard –
suitcase empty now

photographs
of black and white
almost I was leaving
when the best of all
the times
we stumbled on

remember this
the waking up
in sheets of sweetest linen
floating places west
along the ridge
wing’ed crest of falling
pirouette of angels –
forgotten to the sorrows
written here

in ruby red
where slippers fell
the same as ink to Monday
I signed my name
in cursive next to yours
swirls and loops
and hula-hoops –
take of me for chances
a way of walking
somewhere still –
how can I be gone

remember this
the squeaky boards
of sleepless nights returning
circle now the ashes
with the flame
purple light
as passion glows
warm into the marrow
worried not the seeker
unafraid

destinies
as we conceive –
sit the night for supper
folded now our tendencies
are making room
for grace
love remains
in coffee stains –
ribbons to the saucer
lights beyond
where darkness fell
as wishes on the pond

remember this
of everything –
one more kiss (and tell me)
words to disbelieving –
have kept us here
always

. . .

tenderness of time ~

grampa's winters

were memories
around us pulled
comfort to the still
where once the pearls
of laughter
burned us down

moonlight sits
on dirty panes
spring forgot to clean
when caught up in the living
let them go

hands confessed
of others known –
tenderness of time
places kept beyond the reach
of all we hoped to find
granny's star
mistletoe
but who can know
of words denied to kiss
silver bells are ringing
can’t you hear

packages for wrapping
string the lights around
tend the fire
and let the solace in

cards along the mantle
tell of better days
but written to the soul
a kinder pen
