sigh

I wonder
were there rhapsodies
ten thousand years before –
voices meant to carry
across a canyon floor
were there strings
before the bow could sing
an older violin
did dancers sway
in firelight
before the dance began

before the words
came willing
were there whispers
all along –
thought already yielded
unto song

before the books
were written
did lovers understand
the promise held
within another’s hand
the crush of
two hearts beating
as shadows gathered round
a sweeter song
unfolding
without sound

did they know
before the knowing
before their first goodbye
did music stream
unnoticed
like stars
above the night

as violins
of welcome in
were played
then played again
as tender sighs
fell silently
to skin

when the storm
at last is over –
will the earth breathe free again
will the mountains
stop their trembling
such that robins weep
rivers raining red
when the storm is past
will we remember
another time –
a sweeter place
when ashes didn’t fall
to cover grace

remember

the screen door slams
and I’ve forgotten
where I left my favorite cup
an old oak table
bears the faded scars
of somewhere
I was shaken
by habits shared and traded
by stories married
verse and tell me more
a line or two
and I’ll be grateful
for moments I’ve discovered
were ne’ver enough

morning rise

the heart retains
a steady rhythm
cicadas on the glistening lawn –
endearing strum
of ages come to light
branches brushed
against another
starlings into blue
as breath
the winged soul
is given flight

rebirth

I won’t need you
when the sun has passed
into another
sleepless night –
where shadows fall
and nightbirds
grieve the day

I won’t need
the time you gifted
or a memory to curse
when twilight burns
and stars
the dark betray

I won’t need you
when tomorrow
has been washed into the past
on shores
I never wandered –
forgotten
why we came

I won’t need you
when this life is gone
and all I’ve left
is bone –
and cooler now
the lips that held
your name

longing

how sweet
to remember my coming
before
(indiscretion)
a walk ‘neath the pines
filled me with wonder
to coming back now –
from another time
longing
for purpose divine

from touch
came my breath –
and a kiss to endure
would sit in the depths
(the pools) of my soul
forsaken the reasons
for wanting to know
what I knew
from the start –
was my heart
letting go

yesterday's garden

I took solace
in the coming back
to find another way –
a path where none existed
where I lingered
yesterday

I took pleasure
in returning –
to every place I loved before
volumes stacked beneath
the branches
verses scattered
to the floor

I took comfort
with each passing
every life and every stone
dusty fields –
a path forsaken
where flowers bloom
for love atoned

fireflies

put me in a jar
of twilight and jasmine
(never let me go)
hide me away
in folds of scented linen
stories written to yourself
names and places faded
unto years –
(whispers now)
of another time I wished aloud
I remember still
how it was (how it felt)
to hold the stars

lovereturning

I’m the sweetest sin
the first amen –
your silent cross to bear
a fainting sadness
to ease the madness
a moment lingered
everywhere

I’m the first to know
the last to go
beyond the grief of needing
a hand held out
when pressed with doubt
– a voice of promise
pleading

I’m a constant star
where’er you are
a dream to carry the night
I’m the break of waves
a truth enslaved –
from a time before
you knew
of light

mystery

of moments
some forgotten
I’ve wandered back again
how well I knew
and others knew of me
maps spilled together
into another place and time
markers melted
candle wax
and rhyme

roads beyond
the wilderness
I passed between beside
rivers long since gathered
by the tides
mountains thick with laurel
surrendered now to weeds
did once I pass
without a word
a fluttering unseen

between two worlds
are maybe more –
than I with will to count
days no longer matter
to the making
of one last kiss
a first embrace –
a shadow born of thunder
rain – a lover taken
back again
