OF ALL I’VE KNOWN
AND THERE A FEW
WITH NAMES
I DON’T REMEMBER
A SCATTERING OF STONES
AGAINST MY HEART
EVERMORES
FORGOTTEN NOW
THE WAY FOREVER LINGERED
TOOK TO ROOST
A HOME BENEATH MY BED
ALLOWING SOMETHING
MORE THAN I
POSSESS THE NEED TO ALTER
BOXES FILLED –
PARCHMENT PAPER HEARTS
OF FADED LINE
AND ONE MORE TIME –
THE LOWLY EVIDENCE
OF MOMENTS
WITHOUT WORDS
TO SPEAK –
FOR FEAR
THEY MATTER ONLY
IN MY DREAMS

A week or so ago, a friend made comment about her search for purpose.

It reminded me of another forever friend who posed the same question a few years back. As her days increased, she wondered whether she had accomplished the purpose for which she was created. It was difficult for her to imagine because she wasn’t sure she knew what it was.

At the time, I remarked that maybe her purpose was intertwined with mine – that our divine purpose was to know each other and love one another.

Quite simple really. Quite noble as well.

When asked a similar question a week ago, my only thought was to everything we know of life and living. If there is but one sacred instruction, it is to love.

If we love, then everything else finds its place – and other commandments are wasted.

So, surely, love is our purpose. Love changes the weight of all our days such that even the smallest tasks become amazing accomplishments. The least of us becomes more than we might have imagined, might have planned, might have dreamed.

With love as our purpose, we become more than just the sum of our days.

stay
where I have lingered
a whisper on the wind
a fragile light
along the window pane
dream
where once
I fell to sleep
calling out your name
stay
that I might
love you here
again

of yesterdays
when I was five –
older yet than most
with eyes
pretending
no one
dared to swim
oceans bare
a fleeting snare
waves and wings
remember
of paths
already knowing
us to find
get me home
some other way
a dream beyond
september
hands to reach
across
into my own

will
and I wonder
to places unknown
forgotten the weeds –
my way back to home
a secret
unspoken
by lovers and thieves
echoed by crickets
knees
touching knees
a hymnal
of feathers
as light through the pines
souvenirs left by
the rain
where was I going
who waits the dawn
with promise
of heaven
to love me
again

Author’s Note: I love the woods and I love the shore. A couple of years back, while sitting on my porch, I closed my eyes and raised my face to the sun. But the breeze, he told me something more. In that moment, I noticed the song that is the fluttering of leaves. It is the same as the waves on the shore. I wonder who knew it first, but wonder not at the love that allowed them to share it.

how tender
these blessings of
sapphire and pearl
oceans singing
of leaves

comein

someone made mention
of rings on the table
habits worn clean
to the bone
a rusted out latch
keeps no one from leaving
a whispered reminder
of reasons
to stay
where the fences
need mending
and water runs cool
sprung from a river
two miles ‘neath the porch
we watched the sun rise
another
one day
when spoke of intention
promise undone
by a change in the
weather
warm cotton gowns
I dared not replace
with the pretense of love
the essence of summer
left on the line
and a glass
of the best I knew how

once was
a man
I never did know
my daddy
before
he fell into love
whiskey
and fifty two cards
more than most
a heart split apart
by the last
get me back
to a place
not for keeping
returned me
to find
forever had never
been lost
all that was mattered
to the ways
I had come
without need
for a map
or a star
wished upon

reasons
and seasons
worthless regard
for the way
the rain sang
of the desert sometimes
telling anew
with words
scarcely heard
spent in beginning
a search
for the last
place we were almost
torn from the story
redeemed
by the memory
of none

the wind
yet remembers
the weight of my willing
another I was
but a girl – only ten
crickets and
tadpoles
blackberry winters
barefoot as
lifetimes
recalled to me then

spirits
carry me
home by the river
out past the waiting
once promised
for us
a truth
undecided
as roads without name
an echo of someone
I used to be –
loved

Red vintage forest

as I
the road
remembered back
beneath the velvet pines
where once were we
to fit as one
so dear
to touch again
with will the same
as knew
I held your name
beyond the
cast of shadows
a verse
against
my heart

for every time
the times between
somehow
seem longer now
as years before
the winter came
to carry
ash before the first
to fall
snow white paper birds
are nestled there
words of
come to me
without a sound
the warmth that held
a waiting kiss
hands and hearts
and home
seeds
where once we planted
as blossom
we are known
