whate’er has gone
will find again –
morning
twilight
leaning in
across the ways
beneath the floor
were heavens
once I held
before

as now I see
the truth become
with want for I –
the only one
to know of words
– a bitter
taste
life is best
with none to waste

as once we knew
another now
where wishes fell
and kisses lay
sweet the breath
of almost none
would love
be missed
we gave away

might presence steal
the shadows grey
as sun across
our yesterdays
hold me here
touch me yet –
recalled
to ways
I’ll not forget

o_the_sweet

of dreams –
the start of many
mary falls around
til quiet fills
the waiting coffee cup
numbered –
our beginnings
bless’ed every one
breathed between
the want
and ne’er enough

bested by my knowing
sleep may never save
legions undefeated
by my name
startled by
my restlessness
guard to sorrows deep –
embers cool
and there
a sweeter flame

a ways become
of turning home –
moments unconfessed
are left within
a season’s letting go
fragile now
the pieces
carried by my heart –
breath against the windows
of my soul

crossed I once
an empty field
before the evening
blue
– worried not
for where the path
might lead

would restless
bring me home to find another
captive as a wing
within my wish

trace me not
from memory
of this (to come again) –
from where I was
returned
when prayers were said

before the night
was pulled to shade
a whisper ceased
to matter –
yellow held her hands
above the flame

where black
the spinner
cursed the taste
of silk

shadows shift
beneath the grey
wherein the light
was less
than I could pass
remembering
to see

. . .

back again ~

would for the worst
the rest betray –
the coming back
to wander
would trade for none
the imprint won
by promise torn assunder

reborn again
a lifetime more –
and cast them out
as vile
removed the burden
judgement made
for every firm denial

a dime or so
would three or four
be wealth to one of these
or kindness fit
as words so soft –
each sorrow to release

into this lowly circle
was drawn for us
in time –
forgotten not the reasons
– every coming back
to find

the one to wait
with arms held wide –
eyes are blazing bright
remembered for
another day
beyond this chance
delight

were not for them
or for the clouds
who passed
the way with you –
were angels watching ever
come to know the world
you knew

. . .

evening falls ~

vespers

autumn winds
have blown a course
I never once imagined
lines already lost
beneath
the sand
constellations
shifted
beyond the grievous moon
turning from my place
to watch the band

removed
from all the wishing
where yet
an evening falls
distance closing –
echoes touching down
of words
I will remember
who will know them best
– the long night
laying words
without a sound

racing toward another
place I loved
the same –
was here I knew
tho eyes were closed
so tight
believing in
forever –
a life I might have known
had reason
not resolved my heart
to flight

. . .

small and still

how is it
words were come
when there was nothing
left to say
names already written
to my heart

fade to light
so easily –
pull me from my dreams
dared to sleep
– remember me
this way

touch
not soon forgotten
graces understood
miles to go –
and still
I wander on

driven by a madness
settled as a saint –
counting
out my blessings
every one

take of mine
my moments –
as want for any less
change is sure
tho I shall
linger here

eased against
forever –
weighted by a sigh
held by something
greater still
than I

justhere

left me here
the signs of age –
a road already worn
the ways of some
an ancient oak
retold
and I
for one
could never guess
the wisdom
you would carry
proof revealed
– some heaven
here
below

scattered ‘bout
these weary days
this plea
for something more
than e’er a page
a rhyme
could keep us fed
learned into
this passion
wherein your name
is kept
folded near
each page
upon my bed

sapphire tears
are hidden
by a questioning of light
of fear betrayed
with love
I couldn’t say
of where I’d be
when morning found
me watching
for a sign
when worlds beyond
our knowing –
fell away

. . .

opened wide ~

remembered

of sorrows
I have many
yet my heart is cleaved
again –
opened wide
to let the others in
starting
as all over
once and more
for every time –
here we end
here the new begins

trading scars
for ancient stars –
constellations
born
to trace the lines
around and deep my heart
take of this
they all
would say –
take and leave me sore
fill me up
with living –
let us start

in stories
yet unwritten –
might I tell of love
the same
when given up my
treasure –
every name
would you know
me then
by something more
than tears to never fall
a candle burned
for sorrow –
for us all

rhyme
and there you wonder
where it went
and what it means
when words are caught
and I can’t say
a thing
but trust the beat
of measure
come in every
word I write –
to fill the darkness
sweeter now
with light

closerus

bowed against
a vow unspoken
hands are holding
(now I know)
where the path
was meant
to wander
sweet and golden
sure to home

somewhere
yet
they seek
permission –
tho granted
not for one (as I)
lives are weaved
of blissful
sorrow
borrowed
threads –
each sweet goodbye

who shall
want
for this reflection
breath to wait
the fading light
souls we saved
ten thousand (mattered)
are rushed
by faith
into the night

grateful

before
and still
I have as then
a reason
to remember
the winds are calling
– even now
I rise

to watch
a wave of feathers
course a southern moon
a sea of countless
graces
for my eyes

closing now
where silent sits
in dusted rafters
– soul
gathers unto places
I belong

heart
of one
I know as more
time shall ne’er erase
the music
of becoming –
sacred
song
