our story

what judgements now
the pillow makes –
of those
ten thousand more to break
hush the telling
of what our own –
so busy now the tongue

tary not
on grand design
to make of self the more
by fate
would lay aside the robes
of grace –
and gather yet
the rags of hate

would envy die
or greed consume
the righteous in resounding
how far the victor
falling – was not for wrong
the right

hear this prayer
was only one –
when held a sinner chained
returned to love
by one divine –
let love our truth
reclaim

Author’s Note: In light of this week’s announcements and
headline ‘falls from grace’. We sink no lower than the
moment we bend to pick the stone.  The only story we write is our own.

written to

raptured
by the journey
resistance of before –
icy plains and parched
exteriors

weathered lines
wore me down –
bleach and blind
the same
more for every snowy
white december

breathless
consequences –
of justice we have naught
will leave them there
forgotten
by our kind

sometimes I’m
reminded of ashes
blown my way –
and destinies
now weaved into
my soul

fragile eternity

beyond
these distractions
of pillar and pause
easy financing
of all we could want –
will finds a way
in the silence for speaking

yet muffled the voice
of the heart

wrapped in confusion
experience worn –
each to its own time and place
fated regard of
temporal illusion –

were not for the seeing
we saw

wasted as time
stole away with the clock
woke but a moment
too late
counting possessions
from memory they were
and swore not to dreaming
again

lest something
be missing
was not on our list
how could forever be gone
when kept on the shelf
with things
we have not –

lifetimes forgotten
to live

almost disappeared ~

sweat

restless pattern
of the rain
teardrops on the windshield
passerbys
discouraged by the veil
fleeting recognition
of a story
almost told
though none can hear
the whisper
o’er the wail

the beating
of a gentle heart
trying not to fold –
eyes to search the darkness
for a sign
someone sees
beyond the storms
remembered of her days
were wishes to the gods
for one more time

was drawn against
the falling down
tho who would notice now
the girl she was
is almost disappeared
into a cloud
of memory –
bright beyond the blue
before the sun was smitten
by her tears

grampa's winters

were memories
around us pulled
comfort to the still
where once the pearls
of laughter
burned us down

moonlight sits
on dirty panes
spring forgot to clean
when caught up in the living
let them go

hands confessed
of others known –
tenderness of time
places kept beyond the reach
of all we hoped to find
granny's star
mistletoe
but who can know
of words denied to kiss
silver bells are ringing
can’t you hear

packages for wrapping
string the lights around
tend the fire
and let the solace in

cards along the mantle
tell of better days
but written to the soul
a kinder pen

who am I
they wonder
though I shall not concede
or give them more than rhyme
to understand

lace was never denim
pearls are thrown away
and verse will always win
the morning fight

dreams are more
than one night stands
and more than someone telling
of places faraway –
much closer now

time is something less
than lines –
gifted to the reader
spilled into the yellow
indigo

of pictures in my wallet
some are older than my sins
and graces come
whenever I am here –
I’m there again
swept up in my passions
alive in yesterdays –
and lying in the room
reserved for dreams
I sail away

it’s the wonder of temptation
the lure of letting go –
and late nights
when the kitchen’s warm
I swim in world’s below
my feet against the hardwood
my spine against the wall –
someone speaks in riddles
echoes ringing
from the fall

reminds me of another
and times I couldn’t stay –
met me as was coming back
o’er reasons unbetrayed
by silverware and secrets
where winds uncertain blew
across and back
my recollect –
of things I never knew

in the mist
that was my yesterdays
ten thousand silent birds
– beyond my will to hear
are singing now
but for the night
of wing’ed flight
to worlds beyond my birth
was never meant
a path to me somehow

speckled green
and tattered blues
patchwork bursts of reason
stitched with time
but worn the rest away
hung to line
the veil between
here I am and ever
– someone speaks
and I don’t know their name

shutter speed
as autumn peaks
to fall beneath the cedars
climbing up
to make my bed beyond
little lights
to prick my skin
– who am I to tell
when left outside the gate
a moment long

pressed into
the winter wheat
smelled of other courage
and where our
dreams have gone –
I couldn’t say
leaving takes the
longest time
when all the crops come in
– the mist is rising slowly
to melt my fears
away

silent rhyme ~

tis not for warmth
these hands are folded –
or curved to catch
the morning light
moved as silent birds to daybreak –
across and with
each sweet delight

was not for grace
or prayers unspoken –
steeple pointed toward the sky
felt the sound
of angels gathered –
just beyond the reach
of I

beyond the pool
of secrets spilling –
kisses rise from words the same
breath was given rhyme
for telling –
loving wings these hands
became

the dreamer’s map
of north star guiding –
someone asks (as someone knows)
what of hands
were made for speaking –
what of words
we meant to hold

of a day
unremembered
(not the same) as before –
and numbers turned over
as a note by the door
of the things
worth our missing
when the light burned away
and darkness came long
to recover our place

as we stood
with our arms round another
(we were)

of these stones
to be written –
and dates (we don’t care)
what is real
of the world we created (one day)
reality burns as the quiet takes hold
(and no one remembers)
your name

as music
resounding
from distant refrains –
dance cut of cedar and pine
wishes (laid down
by the side of the bed)
and love
sworn to find us
(divine)

who are you (now)
I can’t say for sure
was there ever a time when I knew
the light(ness of being)
the fire burning (yet)
as wilderness grew
in your place

still (as the one)
forsaken (no more)
as a word bent to ear
(on the ways) to become

I shall live as a story –
of how we were then
(when I lived)
as I loved –
you (remember) again
…
