rememberthis

did I carry you
a sigh upon my lips
across ten thousand winters
to remember
only this

another time
an endless sky
stars we knew by name
leaving us to wonder
why we loved –
why we came

for every life
are moments cleft –
paths we walked upon
denying death the evermore
where memory is gone

did I carry you

almosthomenow

frame this horizon
with all I have witnessed
crowd to the corner
where heart meets to soul
bear me the weight
no more than a memory
of destiny traded
to a dream long ago

laundry and laces
cracked oatmeal glasses
parts given way
as collections laid bare
black and white stories
are telling without us
faded a photo
of a photo somewhere

who is that boy
at the edge of the smiling
where now his reasons
though lost once before
held by a longing
bigger than pardon
when left his horizon
my own to restore

before as now
the same as then –
do you remember where and when
the world was new
but so were you
awake to
understanding

afraid and stilled
at finding truth
was never meant to lessen youth
or ease the heart
tho torn apart –
resolved the soul
to hurting

only love
can calm the storm –
years from where we started from
reminders of a time before
calling us to love once more –
cured only by
the aching

how many times
the coming back –
across ten thousand years
to realize
what wasn’t real –
how life could disappear

like everything
we wished for –
when came the time to leave
holding still to all we loved –
dreams we dared
believe

they never said
nor once confessed
the truth of love’s restraint
to fold across
eternities
wherever life remains

a beginning
never ended –
just beyond the reach of fate
love released of wanting
beyond this sorrow –
waits

do you stutter
when surrender
finds its way
onto your tongue
is promise left to bleed
outside your door
when the choice
for everafter
makes a case for one more day
a longing sweet
as any
come before
do you dry your tears
while sorrow
makes a home inside your soul
do you lie awake
to wonder
over words
that you haunt you so
is there anything
remembered –
of the life you dared to dream
were your plans for love
forsaken
in your quest for all
it means

daddy and me

how gracious time
with all her ways –
to spread a comfort o’er me
when nights
their darkness gathers
to my bed
I recall a time
ten thousand more
as breath when I was dying
hands around my hands
a kiss upon the head

dreams of somewhere
I was yours
for miles
the pathway beckoned
a springtime breeze
swirling blossoms round
til all I knew
was dancing –
two and back again
within your arms
high above
the ground
