chance

a slivered edge
of promise
threaded to a scar
has severed now the line
that held my fate

pressed into
the satin sash –
folded thrice
or more
til words are split
along my yesterdays

as penance
to the keeping –
treasure weights the shelf
above the proof
of tears
we fell between

the sweetest
vow remember me
penned into my soul –
remnants of
a love –
I used to know

…

distances allowed ~

Last week my mama called with the news – an old friend was gone.  Certainly before his time (yet not). He was nine years younger than me – the same as my baby sister.  In fact, my very first job was babysitting him and his two younger brothers.  It was sudden, unexpected – his heart gave out during the course of a night.

He lived alone; slept alone; died alone.

It’s a formula that breaks my heart, and one sure to haunt his girls with what ifs and who could have known.

And yet – he wasn’t found in the hallway or the bathroom floor. He was on his side, as if the moment was first presented as a dream.

Such news moves us for surely we know the echoes of such emptiness. We grieve with the broken, and grieve for ourselves, as we are reminded (again) of the frailty of life, of the breath that stalls, cleaving us from this world, from every might have been.

It’s not the dying that scares us, but the running out of road. It’s not the trip we never took, or the book we didn’t write.  It’s the half dozen eggs in the fridge, yesterday’s mail on the counter, and laundry not yet dry. It is the heart that will wonder to words never spoke, our last time forever the last. It seems as tho the things of little weight in life – weigh the most in death. Faith gives us assurance of another sun, but it is an assurance unfamiliar to this life.

We breathe, and we shed unseen tears for a loss greater than our words. Days pass as memories soften, such that one day we are surprised anew by the passing of life into fall.

I’d swear
there was a time before
I memorized your kiss
wrote your name
in cursive
next to mine

waited one more
always –
of reason to recall
and traded me
a winter
for your touch

you claim
to know my stories
when nights
I find you there
walking all alone
on roads
I go

torn between
the now and then –
were distances
allowed
a light we burned
– another
shining bare

memories
relearning –
the warmth that is
your soul
come again
to carry me
to home

…

delivered from rust ~

leftmewaiting

were there more
than one season
a flood before draught
a whisper of knowing
lines never
crossed

in the telling
compelling me
backwards to place
recorded my will –
on wallpaper scrolls

history layered
by news of goodbye
to welcome
the best of me
home
delivered from rust
the remains of a sigh
a moment denied
the pulling apart –
is worn by my soul
into dust

as longing recalls me
– remember
these steps
in returning
of time to the shelf
as lies from the meaning
of all we had learned –
blessings
to follow us
back through the dark

candles warmed
as smoke rings to glass
the pull of the moon
looking in

were ever another
a reason to die –
seeds I was planting
somewhere
before spring

fashioning shadow
from passionate bud
beholding in me –
their purpose became –
blackberry
thistle
and where have you gone
crushed in the leaving
by sweet
muscadine –

awakened to fall
by a dream

mysteriesmine

so sure my soul
recalls your breath
tho how and when –
I shudder
forgotten here
where circumstance remains

when pulled into
your memory –
as light within
your light –
as vapor unremembered
by the flame

of moments held
so fragile
I dare not speak aloud
of where
the wonder slept –
between us
now

as strangers
to believing –
of another place we came
familiar once
as golden still
the sun

. . .

a light we never knew ~

whereverstillyouare

shall I break
as thunderclouds
above the place you dream
or pull my winter shawl
across your grave
forgiven all
but just the one
betrayal to my love
a dawning unencumbered
by my name
shares the fate
of children
as light we never knew
was come of breath
an early death
to save
as hunger from
 our last embrace
reclaimed to wilderness
remembers us
to silence
we became

lettersfromhome

Sailed I once
into your blue
and fell as ash somewhere –
washed with rock
along the canyon carved.
Homeward
(closer) to the sea
you carried (lifted) me.
Guarded I the seed
became your kingdom.
No more than one –
one tiny grain –
but there a garden grew
with trees so tall
they skirted heaven’s rafters.
Another home
was anchored there
with view to lands above –
No less than kings
love resolved to love.

Sailed I once into your blue
and fell as ash somewhere.

. . .

just beyond ~

beyondtheseplaces

end of day, end of time
both have now arrived
we must believe
love will outlast us
somehow, mysteriously
cast beyond what we have always
understood, in the ethereal
spheres, in the chaos
of a million heartbeats
rhyming here and now
with a splash of eternity’s wish
and in the single moment
everything stops to change
irrevocably, will you stifle a tear
as my hand grows cold
and my fears fade into
your solitude?

we cannot speculate
about dreams between the sun and moon
starlight’s secrets or the depths
of a single human soul
life is a tiny frozen fragment of an iceberg
what remains invisible coerces our faith
into a destiny called beyond
we hear our heartbeat articulate
its incessant pumping red emotion
recalling the flush of today’s triumph
or yesterday’s merciless failure
we puff our lungs with stale air, and mask
a fleeting wish for a hermit’s habitation
a place where dreams stimulate us,
and spin desire into a worldly orbit
like a crazy laughing merry-go-round —
will we never learn to calculate
the distance between two words of love?

or something more ~

meanotherplace

there was a place
I stayed too long
as water softly lifted
swept the bloom away
washed my petals far

from where was meant
a garden someone planted
just for me
a spring bouquet
of gladiola reds
and flutes of yellow promise
tilted by the sun
should have known the rain
would fill them with goodbye

dizzy then with longing
his eager crown to steal
folded green
to goldenrod
surrendered to the flood

there was a place
before I knew you
waited something more
redbud turning purple
wishes climbed beyond
meaning swirled in final dance
none of us could learn
seed denied the longing
gone to home alone

was there a moment then
love thought
we might be saved

I don’t know
it isn’t fair
the pulling things apart
rivers keep no memory
of the sea
overflowed the only banks
had a chance to hold
did I float away
asleep on yester dreams

. . .

spinning ~

doyouknowmenow

count these days an echo
of ancient lullabies
a passage
made much sweeter
by the night

pressed between
the shadows –
rolled beneath the sun
lifetimes passed
into the failing light

spare the stars
your grieving
else they stay aloft too long
curs’ed dark –
a lantern burning bright

write
for me a reason
this tender world to hold –
longing frees
the poet heart
to flight

. . .

unremembering ~

was said
there’ll be another time
I wonder if that’s true
when I will find you waiting here
when I shall come to you
when I will read
and you will write
our words will spill the same
how many lives may pass as none
to wonder why we came

you feel it now
I know it’s real –
this longing in my soul
was made for words and words will come
how is that you know
I read it once  (you taught me well)
how could that ever be
another time (of all we know)
a place of destiny
there are words
and there are words
that’s how I’m bound to you
as breath to breath
as earth to sun
I know this much is true
I’ll find you when
we touch
we love
we dream

I love that smile
it’s been a while
through times of disbelief
you knew me then
and now again –
the smell of burning leaves
would rivers know
the way to home –
will bring you back to me
