eternal

Last Wednesday……not that long ago.

Last Wednesday, I received a call from my ex-sister-in-law. In a matter of just a few days, her husband had fallen, been admitted to ICU, been diagnosed with a failing liver, been given the prognosis that he would not recover, and been surrendered to the loving hands of hospice.

Friday was a long day but yesterday longer, and this morning, at the ripe age of sixty, he passed away.

I’ve had colds last longer than the time it took for a page to turn, and a new chapter to begin for his wife and his daughter who is expecting her first child – his first grandchild.

I reminded my friend numerous times over the last few of just how precious this time is, even at its absolute worst – it is a treasure that some never have and would give up everything in order to know.

It’s a last chance to say everything that matters, to hear everything that matters. To grieve, to heal, to gather…..

Her faith is strong.

I am reminded (again) that (as a rule) we do not have the luxury of keeping our own clock, and like it or not, eventually our days will be done. We know not when, nor would we wish to.

As hard as this time already, I believe it is the moving on that wears the harshest. I imagined her returning home today and opening the fridge on a leftover salad from last week, the remnants of an ice tea not finished, socks in the dryer, shoes beside the door, carkeys on a kitchen counter. It is that which closes around us – the resumption of a life made smaller.

Yet, even in the remembering, we are blessed….. ❤

let me know
when life is come
and started new
without
the warmth that was
a kiss that knew
the way to ease
my longing

grace

what story
left unwritten
haunts the tender hours
the crawl
that makes her bed
beneath my own
what innocence becoming
was the place
I first believed
love would save –
love for us
atoned

what blessing
goes unnoticed
adorned to dusty shelves
wrapped in sleeves of linen
tied in bows
shades –
the same as kisses
warmed beneath the dawn
as winter falls
silent in the snow

Willmeremember

the mail came
and the walk –
not much further
than before
when scented pages
threw a kiss
across the landscape
never threatened
by the rivers
or mountains drawn
between

a whisper spawned
of poetry
feelings
worn to rust
rhyme we never
claimed to understand
the way it was
forever
pressed into the fold
ink became
the memory of dreams

surrenderme

what silent
loneliness could steal
the mysteries of life
solitude
where joys are known to play
who says we shan’t remember
or think beyond
to this
another time
some other sunny day
for all is well
we carry on
and take with us
our lowly best
of love we’ve given
love we’ve known
our eulogy –
our rest

days –
the sands
of almost past
are swept beneath
the shore
where walks we made
hand in hand
(the heart
can still recall)
the gentle pull
of oceans come –
as wind
from distant seas
silence fell
(as whispers) –
confessions
from the fall

sometimes
still I gather
moments by their stems
arranged in peaceful
place
against my heart
where essence
so familiar
blooms
to take my breath
reminding me
the way
was mine

paper spools
as silence gathers
ribbons shine
beneath the boughs
blessings warmed

a moment saved
for brave beginnings
nights behold
some distant star
of one we dreamed –
was love becoming
hope for all –
a story ours

alzheimers, deeper than bones, healing, holding on, life, love, missing, nature, remembrance, safe, truth

Medicine-Woman-Seeking-Solitude-1915-courtesy-Library-of-Congress

You’d think by now
I’d remember…
what words were said (that day)
How many lives
could we have passed
were lost along the way…
I’ve wandered long,
the same back roads
were there before (but when)…
I’ve walked in fields (I know)
where once we loved
(when love began)…

I’ve watched another sky
we watched (was younger then by far)…
Before the whole world watched,
we knew the moon
(we knew the stars)…
Were moments we would lie
awake…(for just a moment more)…
would cling to every
shadow (we became…)

what promise I could make
(I’ve made before)….

For all I know of seasons passed
there’s others I believe…
I may not have the words,
but there is proof…
(I couldn’t leave)…

I have these hands…
you cried into…ten thousand
nights ago…
A world of songs (and I
would always listen)…
(the only) one to know…
between the melodies…
I yearned to hear the lullabye…
the same as mine…
I have the proof
(of reason)….
(here am I)…

Was evermore
I thought had passed…
…mere words (it seems) have not…

…you’d think by now
I’d remember….(this)
what my soul
has ne’er forgot…

Another moon…
another lifetime (pulled away)…
will then I search for
evidence…
these paths (I recognize)…
a somewhere (soon)
as words became..
the least of love (to prove)
will then I find (as I have now)
the truth…within
your eyes….

Author’s Note: I feel some sense of obligation to note the
inspiration for this piece. I visited with a family member recently
who suffers from Alzheimers. Although there are many whom
should be remembered, at times they are not. Yet, without exception,
and for reasons previously unclear, I am received with
a warm and genuine smile.

I do not believe that it is my physical presence that
causes such a response….rather, I believe it is a recognition
of love. I may live long past my dearest memories, but know
I will (always) recognize love….

beyond words

I’m the daughter
of a son
a tender petition
an echo
where promise
once moved on the wind
a wave from the marrow
river of my heart
spoke
in the language
of soul

to your soul

a moment
returning
to one never lost –
how sweetly we feel
when cleared
from the past
remembered as whole
to places we’ve been
touched
without touching
eternally when
we were held
as a secret –
passed without word

from a light
just beginning
to burn
