proof

a length of thread
worn golden here –
laced and stitched
and braided
as endless as the summers
gone before
were truths
already taken –
lie awake
we come again

backwards into falling
morning dreams

are hastened
by the twilight –
frosted with the dew
a fleeting kiss
where breath forgot to take
our name as taste
to autumn lips –
nights we lingered so
above the place
remembered
to our soul

caught in spells
of once I was –
and begged me not to go
beyond the break
of love
into a word I couldn’t say –
a time we passed
along and still
looking for today
a fortune green
of four leaf kind
stars betrayed our realm

crossed and back
returning
to begin

. . .

red gardenia
painted lily –
fences grieve the leaving me
for somewhere
just beyond remember
essence nests
in mystery

without the thirst
as need for sorrows
were mine to suffer
mine to hold –
starlight casts a spell
of knowing
across the meadow
deep and cold

braided fates
and boots for walking
fragile yellow buds
abound
wrapped in sheets
the wing’eds envy
heaven
wears a cotton gown

letmebe

she remembered
every snowflake
as memory to her tongue
knew by taste
of oceans –
might a tear become
carried by
the faithful Mississippi
knew her song
and every port
by name

a mystery
of histories
frozen into word –
breathed against
a broken window pane
distant
as the night
from where it started
sorrows coming down
to match
the rain

. . .

dearest me ~

promisestokeep

beyond the reach
of worry –
the muddy feet of dreams –
sunlight paints the floor
and junebugs cry
while racing thru
the kitchen
a river golden green
mistaken me for windows
opening

to make a song
of summer
glories into vine
purple dress as gypsies wore
in circles dancing round
holding hands
together
telling lies

of dearest me
in letters bound –
by scarlet ribbon fate
a fortune left in dishes
cardboard home
beside the ghost
of wishes –
last year’s Christmas tree
soiled linen graces
neath the sink

someone meant
to warn me –
someone said of luck
the crickets sing
of broken hearts too much
one more sun
than I could think
of reasons not to go
when all the windows
open
to the night

. . .

one kentucky (after all) ~

leavemenotforothers

I’ve seen my share
(was home to) bluer pastures…
seen fences (rusted wire),
barns that rose from ashes
to the stars…
I’ve lost it all
beneath the blue
Kentucky (fell one summer…)
but still I see the stains
upon my fingers…
(the smell of winter hay)
will always be,
without the need for getting
over —
Was not a hurt (awaiting)
to be healed…
a moment to be filled
with something more…
There’s no need
to carve another over this –
tis only one
Kentucky…only one
as this within my heart,
the weathered barn….
(sleeps with warm tonight)…

Wasn’t love the same
yet I’m amazed
at those (who raise the match)…
would seal the scars
with tar and bind their eyes
from looking back…
Would deem all memories
(the same)…
and deep within
an emptiness (holds the only proof)
here love was kept…
a house no longer furnished
(piano no one plays)…
Names are never uttered
lest the pain become renewed…
tis a ritual
of painting (over everything)…
til truth is nothing more
and nothing (just the same)…

Only love remains –
one Kentucky (just as blue)
moments kept apart –
restored to pasture…
(september sun)…
Stars were never less
for their shining…
never dimmed (into the black)
on which they burn…..

The bluest grass
still grows beyond the
meadows (I can see)…
and love
will never be a place
to get beyond…
Forever (both)
become much dearer
(initials carved in wood)…
poems penned to leaves
(the scent of maple)…
a key returned
the tender world (of me)….

. . .

Author’s Note: Time is an arrow, and yet (yet) some words
stay with us longer than others. I’ve likely written thousands
of things in my life, and this remains one of those most dear.

back to me ~

bravelittleme

dare I now
to close my eyes –
illusions of the same
somewhere
there
a whisper
of my name

falls around
as mystery
I never could concede
to know the ways
to home –
and back to me

hands to reach
a kiss just so
who am I to tell –
the taking from the leaving
when both
have fit me
well

a sky this blue
another gave
one day –
from all the rest
to know of truth
I carried –
a blessing
unconfessed

eases now
as once I knew
the touch
of letting go –
hands were reaching
softly –
eyes were open
closed

. . .

not for counting ~

sweeping

you told me
(just today) you cried –
one night while I was gone
you cursed the moon –
for hurts (we felt)
alone

familiar
this returning
to questions unconfessed
dreams are
calling softly –
(dare I rest)

with verses
once I wrote
(I saw you on the lawn)
and fell asleep
your name
upon my tongue

secrets
not for counting
– blessings
(more than these)

you said
you cried –
for moments
(caught
between)

. . .

magic

o tender heart
what distance tears
the keeper
from the seeking
what words
were never heard
(I hear them still)
tender as
ten thousand
tiny wings above
the timbers –
(call me home)
surrendered
as I will

o longing (stay)
within this breast
of all I’ve not forsaken
to know you then
– the path begins
anew
where and why
the truth
(is never gone
from us forever)
returning me
across the night
to you

. . .

resolved ~

something matters more

tiny pearls
were wishes made
one night before the summer
was rained upon
the meadow –
let me in
whispering a story
lived I not for long
chances took
and I am here
again

silent
spools the ruby red
feathers to the limb
while just a bit
aways
the blue
becomes
resolved to something
bigger
floating to the ground
swept beneath
the sleeping winter
dawn

. . .

whenIcallyourname

wrote of one Kentucky
one blush
became a bride –
of hills and empty spaces
sketched between

the coming back
to hold you –
in threads of willingness
found me here
believing
in a dream

fell awake
beneath the stars
cut of purple light
names and dates
– places
I was known

startled
as a winter lark
backwards through
a storm
silence
finds me better
left alone

once before
as surely soon
I’m bound to
understand
the bliss of leaving
home –
to come again

bittersweet
the ache
that has no memory
of loss –
just a feeling
left of blue
Kentucky
winds
