trustme

for a time
before
was forever here
as close as breath
to the wind
as near to nothing
everything true –
eternal soul
awakened again

from the way
I came
down some other path
to walk a day
in your sun
to gather strength
as shadows fell
silent ribbons
undone

from the first
I knew
as am knowing now
of a moment
living apart
from the place
where love
remains with me
written somewhere
on my heart

was there
once before
a story unencumbered
a part became of all I know
becoming not the end
of two or more
ten thousand miles
of houses barely standing
weathered paint
and not much more to keep
than hands
together knitted
round a time
was almost lost
where now
the news of leaving
fills the town
with worry for the breaking
and hearts to split apart
nights beyond
the eager reach of sleep
stars were lined
along the sil….
tucked beneath the lace
dreaming not the same
as of you now –
blue the smoke of cedar
rolling down the hill
from places known for stone
and daffodil
remembered
would it matter
just how simple
we were then –
when given words
but chosen yet to kiss
before the day a shimmer
of breath
above the still
– a life recalled
could never end
that way

. . .

Author’s Note – A week ago this Sunday, my mother and I took a drive into the ‘old country’, along rivers where once we swam and roads not the same.  We visited the cemetery where so many of my ancestors rest – between a pasture, a (cold cold) river and a valley.  This house stands not far away, near another cemetery.  My mother told me of the people who once lived beneath these aching timbers, when this was majestic place, filled with stories only started and rest far away.

onceuponame

before the night
is scattered
by the first embrace of dawn
for moments then
I float in half awake
with thought to more
than earthly care
visions passed between
– nothing
I’m prepared
to give away

(if evermore)
a moment come
and always at my will
no ordinary feeling
wraps me sweet
within the still

embraced by this
surrender
more than breath –
or hands to hold
love that has no measure
brings a solace
to my soul

sun that begs
these buds to tremble
my sleepy eyes to sight
awakened by a
promise –
writ in messages
of light

lest I wander
past the leaving
and will my spirit
home –
to the heart
that keeps my pillow –
the kiss that is
my own

as breath
was I ever much more
than a wish
given a star
when the sky
fell away
a memory formed
by the coming
back round
to begin
were we then
just beginning again
a soul recalled
to a moment divine
a flicker of flame
made light
out of this –
heaven we swore
to remember

returning

One of my favorite people passed last fall, and yet it feels no different than when he was here.

I believe George was one of the most engaging people I’ve ever known, and he thought I, one of the wisest.

I must note that’s not a part of the reason for his being one of my favorite.

Our relationship was built on the simple notion that it was allowed to be. When we talked, there was no room for agenda, responsibility, or ego. We loved one another, but the words need never be spoken. We knew – in our souls, in our hearts, in our bones.

Funny how it happens that when you rid your relationships of competition, jealousy, expectation, rules – you make more room for the thing that matters most – LOVE.

I once commented to my daddy that it was amazing how love worked. You could love as much as you thought possible, but if you allowed it, each and every day you’d not be surprised to find that you loved even more.

Even the poet has no perception of just how much the heart can hold.

. . .

beyond the reach
of worry
beyond each new
regret
the heart remembers
how the soul
can sing

how is it
becoming –
a memory true
as the near perfect shade
of chestnut
of root
the filter of lilacs
lavender
moss
as a dream
now surrendered –
tendered by loss
as another I held you
another I wept –
long past the edges
writ for me here
in scripted
assurance –
promise and vine
paths given way
to the margins of time
a keeper unseasoned
by love
at its best
purpose made sweet
by forgiveness
confessed
let me to know
of a place
not so far
as the essence
of lilac –
a night in the stars

softer

for every now
a little while –
when yesterday
we wept
grieving in our joy
for one more time
when held aloft
our whispered wish
echoed off
the night
pierced the sunday
somewhere
all the same
a veil of no one
notices
how time is kept
beside –
a moment rare
tucked safely
into dreams

it was the way
I felt
when I dreamed
of nothing –
not the road ahead
nor the turning round
to ease the path
of forgotten lessons –
light from somewhere
just beyond
my hands to grieve
as hearts to flutter
dare my feet
to dance again
was here we swayed
in sweet communion
– a waltz
recalled as light
to dream

homereturning

As I get older, I’m more and more aware of time and the measured beats by which it slips away – between our fingers, loosed within breaths, tangled between the bed and wall………. All that we’ve held, but for fraction of eternity, and yet, still, until there is nothing left of us for holding to.

Eventually, we are no more than the sum of those who have loved us, those who grieve us when the night is long and the earth so very cold, who glory the sound of our name, regardless the passing of days (or lifetimes) between.

This morning, I spoke with a dear friend whose father passed yesterday. We’ve talked before about daddies and love that seems most cherished between a daughter and father. When she came to me today, it was with her arms open and eyes spilling over. She knew I would know, that I would feel the pain of her loss the same as I’ve relished the wonderful fullness of her life before this day.

She may not feel it now, but in a few days, that fullness will be her salvation. It will be the reminder of just how rich we can be, with only the presence of love in our lives, spilling to encompass everything we know.

In that fullness, I pray for her tears of gratitude.

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed.  Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude. ~ Denis Waitley

how far from this
were days we journeyed
paths grown over –
weeds divine
mark the way
where once we tarried
beneath the bounty
of love’s design

how softly sings
the morning rain –
a pit of willing patter
as tears along
a length of tin –
buckets from a ladder
rain me down
drown me here
lest I the same become
a threat of storms
beyond the creek –
as rivers from the sea
sorrows
I have given claim
as paid with joys for me –
let it rain
tell I am clear
then let it rain
again
