colors

wake this soul
some distant dawn
warmth before the body goes
before the last
eternity –
speak of love
that I might know

of pages
I was smitten here
heaven held between the lines
wasted come
the morning news –
to steal of days
this mortal rhyme

quiet stirs
in wordless breath –
as sweetly drawn
within
the memory
where dreamed
I loved –
awakens me again

when sworn to less
I cannot bear
the giving up to leave
a change of plans
a path disturbed
of longing
– how
I grieve

remembered

of sorrows
I have many
yet my heart is cleaved
again –
opened wide
to let the others in
starting
as all over
once and more
for every time –
here we end
here the new begins

trading scars
for ancient stars –
constellations
born
to trace the lines
around and deep my heart
take of this
they all
would say –
take and leave me sore
fill me up
with living –
let us start

in stories
yet unwritten –
might I tell of love
the same
when given up my
treasure –
every name
would you know
me then
by something more
than tears to never fall
a candle burned
for sorrow –
for us all

rhyme
and there you wonder
where it went
and what it means
when words are caught
and I can’t say
a thing
but trust the beat
of measure
come in every
word I write –
to fill the darkness
sweeter now
with light

Author’s Note: Inspired in part by the post of a friend.

of songs I couldn’t sing
they sang me well
promised
by the coming back

acceptance

Earlier this week, I received an email from a dear friend – updating me
on the health of her husband (cancer) and inquiring on the
status of a mutual friend.   I responded, and her response
to me left me with a feeling – that I needed to
post this. Even in the knowing, it was
good to find someone else who did as well.

[Obviously, names have been changed; feel free to find your own.]

. . .

Dearest Beth,

Leah is fine, but I so understand your comments regarding Dan. I feel
the same about
Leah. When I call in the morning, and she doesn’t answer,
I immediately wonder if
something has happened. Fortunately,
there are lots of days where there is no power

where she lives or issues with the phone lines in between. Or
days when her night has
been horrid and she has finally
gotten to sleep with aid of medication and she doesn’t

even hear the phone.

She knows I worry, but we’ve reached a wonderful place of knowing
– and appreciating
the gift that is now. If there
is grace in growing older, it is coming to an
understanding of
what matters. We’ll sometimes laugh about stuff we could be doing

but we’re not – quite simply because age gives us the wisdom
to know that the road
isn’t quite as long and we’re not going
to fill it up with things that have no

value.

I’m sorry to hear about Dan, but another part of me is reminded
of a story from
years ago. A dear friend spoke of her father’s passing
with cancer and I commented
how hard it must be to watch a
loved one go slowly. She smiled back and said that the offset

was something so many don’t have – notice. Her family had
been given time to say
aloud everything they wanted to say,
to share what they needed to share. The end was

still hard, but the ‘afterward’ much easier without
the regrets over what had

never been said.

There are a world of people out there who would give
anything for one
more day, one more hour, one more time……..
to say. They had no notice. It’s a

wonderful thing to think we never hold back, but we do……..we
keep from each other the
most intimate of our feelings
and then we have nowhere to put them.

May you find a place most tender.

Love,
Me

Wherever I

of loves
not so many
ten thousand
one more
than a faceless reminder
of where I began

on paths
so familiar
as claimed by my shoes
the shade of my scarlet
to bloom

held to a silence
where nothing
is said
of graces
unhurried release

where distance
is none
but for traces
of time
and a place
they remember me
still

with your name on my mouth

for every life
another spent
– lessons
feathered soft
ancient buttons
loosened by the grey

to where
the just beginning
goes –
to start
without a name
from destinies –
a better plan
is made

for where
somewhere
we’ll find again
the window
through the wood
a lantern
glowing golden
welcome home

mysteries we squandered
by the journey
take us back –
a lifetime more
than e’er I’d pass
alone

ribbons lost
their way into
the oldest sycamore
– longing held
with seasons more
to write

of burdens left
upon the lawn
where’er the dream is gone
– dew is falling
shadows
on the night

because of you

settle me in
as seasons digress
and leaves
burn their way
into snow
reminded of iris
– the color of wings
and a time
passed before
I could know

what was truth
to rekindle
a flame nearly gone –
a song
almost faded

from word
skins are worn easy
as twilight to press
life into passing
unheard

trace
comprehension
of places between
the last on my pillow
– a time
disappeared

starlight is writ
to the back of my hand –
counting my way
back to here

of truth
the soul remembers
as falling
tears became
a promise made
– what more the light
might bring

settled down
these wantings –
of cedar planks
and pine
songs are writ
to circles –
angels sing

back into
the starting
and who would blame
our grief
for seasons
thrice denied
the taking in

winter pulls
the shadowed moon
with longing
for the first –
willing only this –
to love again

within the breath
of now begins
another page I write
with only this
– a memory
of flight

flashing lights
betray the dark
and once again
I follow
the coming back
where I shall find you new

swept along
on lullabies –
sing me home
another
time we passed
of moments –
o so few

prayers awake
as secrets take
the heed
of my confession
to speak aloud
the poetry of trust

gather me
carry me –
will me now
to hurry
– my soul is freed
to wear the name
of love

what worlds
 we wandered years away
with nothing come
between
a star removed
of moments here –
as ancient ones
 to dream

of lives forgotten
plans undone –
by wishes laid aside
for destines
of fear –
a truth denied

what souls
await already –
with knowledge
of our will
they call us out –
and listen for us
still

on frigid nights
the air is charged
with stories from afar
a promise
of returning –
where we are

choosing yet
some other time –
another way we came
to know
before our knowing –
ten thousand
stars
by name
