was here before
as yesterdays –
bending words to need
listened as the wind
tomorrow told
of graces we might never earn
truth to never end
the reaching for –
when searching for
our soul
of stories
almost always –
another we could write
pages turned
are held within by shadow
pieced together
promises –
once more might I be
in places
I was born
to love you so
ten thousand
lives –
a moment’s verse
what purpose left undone
vows are kept
our passing to atone
a faraway familiar
as the moon became a bride –
whispers
welcome strangers
back to home
sweetly now
the falling
of lines no longer read
– ringing as
the light unfolds again
reminders
of some secret sun
hummingbirds will tell
of journeys –
our returning
would begin

we are fireflies
floating in mists of memory
caught in silence
kept with smiles
slight nods of the head
a tear misting the eye
lovers’ intimate knowing
and each of these short-lived wonders
teach us with sparkling glimpses
of truth from their tiny golden lights –
that darkness is a soft pillow
to slow our souls
from the overflow of sensations
as wonders to allow us breath
between the emotions –
and then marvel at each vision
a winking evening star
or a dew covered rose
born of our dreams

Spring did arrive with April’s feathered touch
in yellow blossoms much too rich for Fall –
but waited again the burnt Summer sun,
and grieved not a moment for Winter’s pall.
In melodies written on Sparrow’s wing,
the deep blue umbrella held fast the rain –
so long that time had ceased to remember
the cool December from whence longing came.
What season left behind is ours to keep
another page of eternity sweet –
would linger still in our heart evermore,
as snowflakes melted the first Summer heat.
Were yesterday’s promise so far away –
but want for remembrance of Winter today.

count these days an echo
of ancient lullabies
a passage
made much sweeter
by the night
pressed between
the shadows –
rolled beneath the sun
lifetimes passed
into the failing light
spare the stars
your grieving
else they stay aloft too long
curs’ed dark –
a lantern burning bright
write
for me a reason
this tender world to hold –
longing frees
the poet heart
to flight

was said
there’ll be another time
I wonder if that’s true
when I will find you waiting here
when I shall come to you
when I will read
and you will write
our words will spill the same
how many lives may pass as none
to wonder why we came
you feel it now
I know it’s real –
this longing in my soul
was made for words and words will come
how is that you know
I read it once (you taught me well)
how could that ever be
another time (of all we know)
a place of destiny
there are words
and there are words
that’s how I’m bound to you
as breath to breath
as earth to sun
I know this much is true
I’ll find you when
we touch
we love
we dream
I love that smile
it’s been a while
through times of disbelief
you knew me then
and now again –
the smell of burning leaves
would rivers know
the way to home –
will bring you back to me

my love, let me become your ghost
a trust more discreet
than your shadow, let me follow you
over pathways deserted by human tears
o, to reach for this solitary happiness
let me grow old agelessly within the lifetime
of your images that steal at my breath every night
there, in your eyes the past spins, forever, hesitant
and in my undesired freedom I will sing
of mourning the borders of love’s embrace
if tomorrow
you stop loving me

a song
once carved
by Creator to wing
flew past
my window
the first day of spring
as clover
renewed to amethyst glow
was pushed
from my bed
by the melting
of snow
lacey
white clouds
took blue
by surprise
as wonder returned
from the land
of goodbyes
will heaven
be lessened
when compared unto this
as dogwoods are blushing
the sun’s tender kiss
our days
barely numbered
to these keepers of time
as falling
an angel –
gives bloom to the vine
. . .
author’s note – this dogwood
stands tall beside a creek not far from
where my parents live –
halfway to the place I grew up
she is taller than she
was then but just as wild
she knows my secrets
as I know hers

stay
with me the longer
of days
a mayfly knew
than ribbons curling red
around my heart
stay
and I will promise
another life
or two –
poems seeking
yet a place
to start
stay
the fragile winter
as round the chimney
rings
blue with smoke
burning autumn leaves
stay
the sweat of almost
one july
we ran away –
chasing us a dream
of honeybees
stay
where words are silenced
by whispers now again –
take the key
but leave the night ajar
open to your places
leaving traces
everywhere
morning wrapped
in wishes –
ancient stars
