last I knew

there was a place
we were going
never knew from where
we came
our dreams were old
but dying meant
we’d never leave again –
we could take of these
and leave the rest behind

there was a spot
along the highway –
we stopped just yesterday
and counted miles
stones and stars –
the distance to today
never stayed for long
the holding on
was more than we
could take

was a breath before I caught it
pushed away

there were words
denied of meaning
thought denied a place –
wings the width of shoulders
held together
strings of grace

there were maps
to match –
and ways to clear
cedars filled with swallows
and blue –
the deepest blue
beyond the trees

never looked the same
when looking back
recalled another morning
when cotton floated
low above the fields

it seems that way
the way it was –
and I with love to squander
could have sworn I held your hand
and closed my eyes

eternity
was always more
than I could dare imagine –
when a moment stretched
to take of time –
the only me
I know

. . .

because of you

settle me in
as seasons digress
and leaves
burn their way
into snow
reminded of iris
– the color of wings
and a time
passed before
I could know

what was truth
to rekindle
a flame nearly gone –
a song
almost faded

from word
skins are worn easy
as twilight to press
life into passing
unheard

trace
comprehension
of places between
the last on my pillow
– a time
disappeared

starlight is writ
to the back of my hand –
counting my way
back to here

nearasthis

more or less
as curve to curve
the ease of line
to lace
of soul by love decided
worn to light
wished into forever
arms just full enough
rock me now
beneath this hope
of love

as a moment
held together
wherein tiny stitches
hands have gone
but here the proof remains
a memory of graces
lived inside a circle
spread beyond the making
of pieces cut
just right

nearIam

calm me down
with whispers –
stories of the road
times you called my name
I heard you clear
above the dreams
of might have been
and where you’ll rest
tonight –
as I with plans
one day
to hold you near

silence stales
the cigarette
lipstick coffee cup
clean the break
of one more living shared
long before the sunset
knew to save
her paints –
your fingerprints
were glowing everywhere

dream the stars
from going
with questioning just so
a universe
where love is felt
the same
as sleep along the highway
counting back the miles
– stirred awake
by whispers
of your name

started here

it was a time
reserved for wishing
– the fields were flush
with grain
when a boy
of almost nothing
stood his ground

he dreamed in shades
of fourteen years
a girl behind the glass
found him
as he found her
leaning in

offered up a place to go –
 folded worlds of wonder
took no mind
to what they’d find
tears and joy
and laughter

sailing out
beyond the window pane

three months
down a dusty road
he found the nerve
for asking
far more than this
more than lives could bear
took her for a midnight ride
down across the border
trading rings
and counting stars
between

another then
and moments past
without the need
for telling
what was left
and all a heart might hold
rockabye
and baby –
let the buntin stay
for all we know
was this
our chosen way

now again
the road becomes
a path someone forgot
leaves are falling
scarlet
round my bed
reminders sit in flannel
sheets of gabardine
where he was
she fills
the time between

Author’s Note: In September 1955, a man and a woman shared
their first kiss. He was 23 and she only 14. Three months later,
they married, and two months after that, he was discharged from the Air Force.
Seven days later, he started a job he would work for 52 years. Nine
months after that seven days, I was born. Still they yearn for
one more kiss, and I am blessed on this day – when they celebrate the
start of so very much love.

Story is everything.

somewherestill

of truth
the soul remembers
as falling
tears became
a promise made
– what more the light
might bring

settled down
these wantings –
of cedar planks
and pine
songs are writ
to circles –
angels sing

back into
the starting
and who would blame
our grief
for seasons
thrice denied
the taking in

winter pulls
the shadowed moon
with longing
for the first –
willing only this –
to love again

she spins
in sleeves
of flannel
worried not for word
counts the stars
becauseby name
(gives them
hers)

cursing not
the seeker
nor winds
to take him far
beyond the light
(still
within her arms)

♥♥

in sweet
she pulls
at shadows
and wanders then
to dream
of wishes made
(and where
their burning rests)

in choice
denied the choosing
fortunes yet
untold
for love beyond
her knowing
(gratefulness)

little duck

water settles
deep my sin –
as seasons over stone
as dreams of drifting
far above –
another to atone

green
the crush
of emerald banks
lace against the clouds
echoing a moment
of tender
felt aloud

keeps me here
reminding me
of days –
tho none the same
truth is sworn
to silence
and ne’er forgets
my name

rememberedmehome

I’ve heard
them tell
of summer storms
beyond the reach
of winters –
of places where the spring
has gone to stay
wrapped around
a bitter bark –
falling into sorrow
a time to keep
of lifetimes
yesterday

held us here
with promise –
with want for one last time
a life reserved
if ever fate allowed
given will to gather
lest we choose
another way –
beholding not to
consequence
somehow

changing
as were seasons
passing us to years –
golden crowns
with ribbons furling grey
wherein our faith
is measured –
a truth
we carry still
of times we lived
for this –
another day

. . .

of moments left ~

storybook

ivy claims
the dusty boards
run beneath my bed
beyond the dream
roots are taking hold
a somewhere
I’ve decided
is where I’ll spend
my nights

while keeping here
the best
of letting go

anxious breath
of moments left
of lifetimes there
we knew
calamine
and flannel
birch and bear
cold the ways of winter
let me hold you
closer dear

charcoal swans
are gathered
to the rise

silence
tells me everything
about the ways
you’ve come
and where you’ll go
when morning
shades my eyes

paths
of almost nothing
weave ambrosia
into light
and I am swept
with where you were
tonight
