 comfort my

were passion
but a line to cross –
a turn of anguished page
(conforming not)
the heart to fear –
or sorrows to assuage

were comfort here
and only this –
why tarry
come to stay
(and bring the kite
we never flew –
dreams we put away)

were love resolved to limits
rules were written
(were they not) –
was there a way
I came for you
(and others
I’ve forgot)

were birth the death
I’ve come to tell –
think not it be
the one
for truth
defines the seeker –
(a journey never done)

let loose the chains
unlock the ache –
raise the broken window high
take this breath
(my only)
as my last

change of me
as shadows shift –
and colors alter form
lest names
be all the proof (we find)
of light
(we shared) before

reverses

slip the ring
from round my heart
curs’ed day for trading
so fragile now
our leaving to begin

take of mine
the cedar chest
fourteen sets of wishes
carried from the attic
to the curb

dare me not
to suffer long
with silver bells and rattles
sheets
to match the curtains
I don’t care

set me sail
with dignity –
starch the winter white
and paper now
along our only hall

destiny awaits
the sun
where once Kentucky yearned
for linens kept
in cardboard –
promise in the barn

. . .

remains ~

blessing

of then
another came
and I was loved
before I knew
the road ahead –
would curve into the wonder
of the blue

of ways
I never noticed
where my sorrow would
remain –
wrapped in linen
joys –
every sweet release
of pain

of life
the willing servant
comes the only path
to keep
witness to the loss
was found a place
within my deep

of choice
the answer always
comes – would love
and die for this
reminded of the scars
but more
the bliss

of then
I have such reasons
to touch – to live
to grow
within this perfect
presence –
another I shall
know

. . .

willing

carve to my cup
hand painted finches
and mid-evil strings
of haiku
ten thousand traces
invisible graces
– truth come of nothing
when nothing
would do

quilt me a blanket
of storyful wonder
three times more red
than ever was blue
stiches so small
the past won’t unravel
wherever the future –
I’m taking it too

loblolly pinecones
cover the ground – as hands
to surrender the keys
stay for the telling
I swore to remember –
of spirits returning
their light to the trees

build me a nest
of lapis and whiskers
copper with sorrows divine
clear me a place
hung high in the timbers –
stay for the grieving
or leave us
behind

the last hello ~

sometimes

between the passing
month to month
may to january
were moments
kept to heaven –
by the way I said your name
the same as wild blueberry
muscadine
and peach –
cut my tongue on briar
burrs to skin

the last hello
unnoticed
thought there’d be one more
or two –
left the door unlocked
the windows bare
fashioned me
a favored key –
and hung it round your heart
kissed the place
of lullabyes
nonstop

of mystic ways
I held no sway –
knew not of the seasons
or whether love
could live beyond this dream
remembered as a whisp
of smoke
floated blue above us
strings to tie forever
to my soul

. . .

til I say ~

filled

they warned me once
of dying –
before my time was come
of children
without mothers –
polished stone

of storms
were passed
before my birth –
carved into my canyons
a story
not yet over
til I say

tis luxury
in heartache –
precious scars
worth bleeding for –
a blessing come
for writing
in the dark

I’ve buried want
for reason –
broke the bed
and cut my hair –
gave favor
to the love
that had no home

pages bending over
lest I read them more
and more –
forsaken by
their meaning
to pretend

summer sweat
and winter rye –
some may say they knew
of vows I took
repenting –
for lifetimes passed
too soon

they warned me once
of dying –

. . .

2011
yes the only
answer –
were questions sure to fall
three feet high
and tearing at my knees

seems the years
grown bolder –
an eager course for fate –
tho not so much
my own

bereavement come

another
kind of wisdom –
 sweetest lessons
born of pain
which is right
was never meant
and there we learn
again

carved into
our yesterdays –
tomorrow stands the door
when swore us
to forgetting

every dream we held
before

wherever love
is written
was for a while we fell behind –
dared our heart conceive
of kingdoms come

misty shades
of living passed
ages into ache
the night is gone
in search of ancient light

another time –
were only this
to lay your head upon

. . .

scattered graces ~

close enough

of retracing
scattered graces –
storms clouds gather me around
blackened feathers
silken wages –
haunt the soul
with not a sound

who would know
 of those to listen –
where you are
tho once for me –
I knew you best
I loved you better
but for the man you couldn’t be

clearer eyes
persuade the heavens
counted tulips through the fire
 given love
the grace for living –
sweet the touch
beyond desire

are you now
tho who can tell me
what of faith
when life is past –

was the love I knew becoming
ever real or just
my last

. . .

my way ~

written to

raptured
by the journey
resistance of before –
icy plains and parched
exteriors

weathered lines
wore me down –
bleach and blind
the same
more for every snowy
white december

breathless
consequences –
of justice we have naught
will leave them there
forgotten
by our kind

sometimes I’m
reminded of ashes
blown my way –
and destinies
now weaved into
my soul

. . .

almost disappeared ~

sweat

restless pattern
of the rain
teardrops on the windshield
passerbys
discouraged by the veil
fleeting recognition
of a story
almost told
though none can hear
the whisper
o’er the wail

the beating
of a gentle heart
trying not to fold –
eyes to search the darkness
for a sign
someone sees
beyond the storms
remembered of her days
were wishes to the gods
for one more time

was drawn against
the falling down
tho who would notice now
the girl she was
is almost disappeared
into a cloud
of memory –
bright beyond the blue
before the sun was smitten
by her tears
