findingme

let me go on
sweetly –
let pains this path distill
as sorrows met
with dandelion sighs
let me go or keep me
I don’t care – won’t beg you stay
the road is turning
north on
southern skies

let me go
or let me linger
let me teach
or let me learn
where light is spilled
yellow by the gate
grieve me not the leaving –
had I known where this
might end –
a day beyond
the first I was
to wait

let me go
I won’t bother
asking more of you
than this –
the weight
that is your stutter
on my skin
stay another moment –
I’ve forgotten all I said
free me
with this loosing
let me go –
again

Was a moment
I remembered –
to know we were the same
as destined
I was come
to wear your name.

Safe within
this prophecy
of light His hand to write
– stories yet becoming
of our life.

Of lifetimes
not so many –
even now the past
so dear –
as where we were
when first
I held you near.

The first to keep –
these hands to know
of graces to remember.
Love –
that first sweet breath
of spring –
still lingers
on December.

Author’s Note: Written for the grandparents
of a dear friend – celebrating 76 years together.
Happy forever, Charley and Lyz.

proof

slow
the sure release
of night into the dawning
as breath
above the rim
of coffee black
as prayer
into the ethers
of another sunday after
as bibles wait to blessings
taken back

praises be
to one who knows
the best of us
is lacking –
forgiveness rarely come
without regret
the weight of words
remembered
as a bitterness to taste
haunts the soul
unwilling to forget

love
as I am hoping –
seals the broken streets above
curtains drawn
as proof of time’s retreat
garner us eternity –
of life beyond our own
where even now –
our name
is something
sweet

asonetoone

ease me to going
carried once more –
as ash on the lips
of a far away wind
grieve
not the leaving
bear not the blame
or sit long the night
with my name

forgiven
the passage
of death into light
in breaking again
to living I came –
sworn to remember
the sorrows I’ve known
to ease one –
another we waited
this long

to be
as in being
a promise once made
to ease of the ache –
a salve
to the pain
to listen
(I listen)
I hear what you say
as I lie awake
crying
your tears

stillme

thought you knew me
wind and rain –
a year without a summer
as fortune spun
of maple
– silver plum

barns awaited filling
was there
I held you softly

fit me
as I fit you well –

back against the dawn

slow the will
from starting
a spare of winter graces
 nightime fell to whispers –
 love me more

as garnered
by surrender –

one last golden autumn
as I am come
the ways

of summer storm

keepsmereturning

I hang on words
verbs and adjectives
that distill time’s crazy hold
on my life
souvenirs kept
in spiral bound notebooks
with tiny locks
so easily broken
like dreams
or promises carried forward
from past generations
a chapter neatly finished
but always incomplete
tonight I unplug the yellow bulbs
strung to seasons of evergreen
sons of the tree
that rose silently one year
in splendid happiness
crystalising the summit of my childhood
the night you disappeared
and distress replaced your love
too young then
I neglected to listen to your words
thinking surely you’d be around
to speak them hundreds of other times
and now –
older than you were that year
I’ve forgotten
even the sound of your voice

sworn
to believe
the seasons have passed –
how many ten thousands
are stilled by this one
rolled into years
without reason
to count
how many forevers
this sun

as legions
forgiven –
to lie at her heart
soft in the shadow of still
faded as cotton
gathered to light –
are songs from lips
ever sealed

yet
when the morning
stands from the dark
silence – their voices
abound
dew glitters sweet
on petal and pine –
as passion wells up
from the ground

deeper

of scars
all but faded
the beginning is lost –
no reminder is left
of the pain
of stories we started
forgotten us now
were given us choice
to remain

more than a few
are sealed within lies –
a place I was going
when fell by the way
given to truth
I thought would oblige
souvenirs kept
with the blade

crisscross
remember –
threads into silk
moments reweaved
by their coming apart
letters have worked their way
into skin –
scars running clean
to the heart

were for choices
I to blame
and lengths forgot to go
history repeating
in everything I know
could this be all
would hope hold fast
when every faith is failed
what light shall reach
the sailor lost
to shine within the gale
tis all we have
this one – this more
this ache of circumstance
believers come
and sinners lose their way
faltered in surrender
of one the other held –
drifting past the darkness
into the grey
led us to temptation
gave away our best –
held to proof
these mysteries of grace
souls to save
and there our truth
regarded as our worth
to love as we are loved
without regard
to place

gracesundeserved

for every fall
a picking up –
a matter of perspective
someone crushed
an apple tree to seed
long I stood
just looking up
hanging then to heaven
o’er I would want
whatever fell to need

would prayers be heard
I know that now
no matter why the sinner
would fall to knees
with plead for lowly grace
chained the past
was one more grief
of burden to deliver
would nightbirds come –
to leave without a trace

to sigh aloud
the first amen –
is whispered without memory
of why the choice
or where our purpose came
now to lay (me down)
just so –
years from where I started
sorrow just as heavy
wears a different
name
