begonia
the color of Revlon 09
last year’s kiss
almost gone
brushed to the suede
green gloves of remiss
ached
where steps ran
flush with the porch
not long
til all we have left
of the winter
is a place where he stood
in the snow
peering through windows
while inside
we glowed
fat with the memory
of blossom
to come

december sits
in last year’s clothes
somewhere in the closet
patent leather shoes
and gabardine
woolen slacks
I hate them so –
you’ll never see me
wearing
gloves to match my scarf
to match my coat
barefeet stretch
into the cool –
boots along the hallway
bend me down a pair or two
will keep me here
til spring
winter winds
my story know –
talking through the window
frost the mirror –
tempt my soul to wing
dimestore pearls
and chapstick hearts
pictures crowd the mantle
proof of days
were seasons past the same
roses stand with brittle heads
bowed to prayer
for patience –
lacey lips are calling me
by name
practiced hands
deny the cold
to cup the fragile blossoms
breathed again a miracle –
as memory of the sun
softest hope
remembers now –
the promise of another
summer rain to save us
beyond december
comes
. . .

eternity
was gifted me
this morning
just at dawn –
when reason floated
pearl against the light
pastel pages
fluttering
as books were put away
stories almost ended
now begin
between the place
of getting by –
and knowing the unknown
pathways open wide
to worlds apart
fragile as a robin breath
pushed into the day –
as somewhere now
revival hymns
are played
stones
three hundred forty two
around the barn
and back
sorted once by size
and now by time
measured as girl to grow
knee-high to the mountain –
sings (tho she can’t sing)
of holding on
beauty keeps
a patch of grace –
queen anne’s lace and lilac
sheets are frozen stiff
upon the line –
winds are blowing
cool across these memories
of May –
tender now the calling
back to spring
. . .

november
barely made a hush
when passed outside my door
as traces
of the winter
tempted me
quiet slept
wrapped in snow –
somewhere near the road
but further from the world
than needed be
to see the stars
they aren’t the same
as bright from near the city
I wonder sometimes
lately what you know
magic flies
the liquid night –
on wings of never touching
luna does her best
to stay away
press my words
against the cold –
wherever love is still
wondering the reasons
we were come
just beyond the promise
where spring
her wait is done –
seeds of our november
yet to bloom
. . .

this morning
the driveway was covered
with letters
held a bit long by the sun
reminders of others
sweet as october
and dreams kept
for seasons to come
hands were unfolded
open and anxious
to catch every tear
as they fell
mystical dance
of reason returning
words without meaning
(or none we could tell)
shades of a lifetime
pressed to a moment
bound into pages
of memory wrote
sealed with a kiss
as ten thousand others
would wait us for passing
as maple to smoke
as poetry dried
by inkstain to wishes
thought gone the way of the wind
infinite proof
that love will sustain us
out past the places ~
we wander again
forgotten somehow
the seasons since passed
snowflakes and junebugs
are gathered to light
warmed by a day
(another we came)
haunted by leaves
kept real by the night
swirling (these gifts)
of red burned to gold
lessons we learned of
surrender ~
comfort me now
as life spills the ground
let go
let love ~
remember

of the truths
forgotten there ~
and words were never ours
when sought again
the need to understand
the mystery
of magnitude ~
the first
was last
to ever
and chapters fell
as flutters to the floor
a name or two
we trusted more
for keeping real our stories ~
when gave us all we’d need
for getting on
traded down the line
for love ~
spoke when none
would listen
and set the rights
of solitude to stone
red to grey
these lacey lines ~
trials and trails
and treasure
grace surrendered more
by shifting light
babies cry
while mothers pray
tomorrow will be better
when comes the son
another savior one
leave us not
with these to keep
show in us your presence ~
find us near
as prophecies revealed
in books our charge
foretelling ~
were not as pages sewn
but word becoming
more than word ~
when written
to the soul
….

come the early chill
of autumn
maple spurned by drying leaves –
there blossoms of december
sleep beneath
her mystery
come the blush of frost
a snowflake –
to seal the blessed earth
ageless as the rings
surrounding –
burned to black
her lowly birth
before the spring was made
to suffer
one more fall beyond our reach
sacred vow of consecration
wrapped in rain –
the willows breech
to stand before –
alone untethered
more by faith that one of time
seeks the truth
but knows its answer –
one more bud
to break the vine
beyond this fleeting
intuition –
hope for one more
warm embrace
before the sun concedes to shadow
cedars watch the night
for grace

with the faith of love
returning –
clouds beyond the smoke
and poems someone wrote to me
this way –
of serenades
in mid July –
April now forgotten
cept when the night birds
send the chill to bed
and come the frost
to take of vows –
spinning scarlet
dancers
wrapped in stems of lace –
the latest style
wished upon
a morning star
one night in late November –
tied a secret
to a firefly
and waited for the Spring
