was said
there’ll be another time
I wonder if that’s true
when I will find you waiting here
when I shall come to you
when I will read
and you will write
our words will spill the same
how many lives may pass as none
to wonder why we came

you feel it now
I know it’s real – this longing in my soul
was made for words
and words will come
how is that you know
I read it once – you taught me well
how could that ever be
another time – another bed –
a place of destiny

there are words
and there are words
that’s how I’m bound to you
as breath to breath
as earth to sun
I know this much is true
I’ll find you when
we next begin
as love
somewhere
we dream

I love that smile
it’s been a while
through times of disbelief
you knew me then
and now again –
the smell of burning leaves

would rivers know
the way to home –
or long for something more
than places still remembered
where love was passed
before

get me back ~

lifetimes more
somewhere I know
I left you broken (left you blue)
fortune raised to falling light –
into these arms
of wishes true

wore your tears
against my heart
eighty years and not a one –
you weren’t a part
of me (becoming)
– jealous moon
of curs’ed sun

found a note
you left behind –
and pinned your voice
inside my sleeve
for every time
I heard your name
my breath was stopped
for love (to grieve)

was ever I
to feel this way –
or given grace
again somewhere
(take me back) into this life –
another day
to find you there

dare you break
of ties so frail –
as final payment lingers due
wilted roses
broken fence
and miles between
(I never knew)

where you’d be
this time around –
Kentucky roads
split north and south
the same old stars –
(the same sweet view)
and all the rest
forgotten now

once enough
forever still –
words are folded
(you can’t see)
pages rub (my memory raw)
as night returns
your love
to me

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

as soft the wind
the grasses lure
and golden flows the river
swayed against the backs
of skyward glance

such it is
the calm retreat
of thought before emotion
as voice remembered
after words
have gone

in the silence
do you listen
e’er your name be spoken here
or prayed the night
in private –
echoes falling
just as clear

as leaves
restore a blanket
spun to ribbons
for my hair –
will breezes blow
our truth to know
in pieces
everywhere

now the page ~

mercy come
as mercies will
into the rite of slumber
and wait the waking eyes
to understand
the light beyond
was come into
the night without concession
stilled beside the river
was our lives

turning home
as one to know –
another shall be waiting
the roads between
and those we made anew
tie these strings
into the boughs
sing of something better
was held within the silence
secrets to the breast

honor me
as I have you –
speak that I might find you
waited by the door
where once you fell
give of me the story
become as one with mine
as everafter written
now the page

verses lie beneath me
where two were once
made one
wrapped in rhyme
and set afire by word

twisted locks ~

would dying change
the colors –
of daybreak on the pond
or move the waters
backward to the fall
would life go on
despite the urge
to end it all this way
as dew surrendered slow
into the sun

would leaving
be the answer
to questions I have asked
or roads be worn
apart beneath my feet
beyond the briar
nursed by time –
scratched into my skin
the memory of running
yesterday

would skies be sworn
to brilliance
before the darkness fell
or urge the daylight
burn beneath her flame –
forgotten now
the scent of rain
out beyond forever
tis where I wait
the night
without regret

would life be more
than I could bear –
or prayer my secrets fold
when given back
these souvenirs of love
twisted locks
of mystery –
braided by the dark
warm against the map
that is your hands

would ever I be
as one alone –
without these words to comfort
an empty page
and nothing more to write
breathe again
into the place
stories are remembered
walk the path
beneath my skies –
forsaken not
to roam

reminded of another ~

for a moment
of unspoken faith –
alone among the cedars
and dared my pen confess
of all I see

of light to split
the eager black –
a call to life somewhere
echoes ring of aches
upon the breeze

shadows shift
where spirits roam –
between the bear and afid
surely here –
the honey smells
of wine

where was I
when yesterday –
the need to find my keeping
when took to heart
a path beyond the pines

sweetly as a morning tear
I’m reminded of another
when once I stood
and all the world
was still

pages bent from aged bark
syllables grow silent
cast to words no longer spoke –
longing shall reveal

mists along an eastern ridge
where songs are being practiced –
nightbirds flee protection
by the sun

there as I was started
by these truths I knew before
turns with me to home
before the day
begun

framed by the sun ~

further than most
were daring adventure
and wandered I more
to those moments
of flight

truth held by silence
together (this ever)
and yet for the soul –
to remember me now

as writing to places
undone by the rhyme
and what was the vow
worth holding in trust
awaiting again
this reason to come

of somewhere
a life
never planned
awaits in the fold
of venus to clovers –
as love without need
for a time

or division of meaning
what of mine yours –
as the face
now framed
by the sun

in the dawn
where my dreams
are gathered to seed
and I –
but a pillow of stars

easy ~

more than breath
or seconds wore –
as grace
a skirt of solace
miles beneath these dirty feet
an ancient drum implores
and I of lowly presence
can’t ignore the come to me
as winds repeat
my name
upon the sea

to wander home
and home again –
beyond these streams of living
when opened up my heart
a measure more
than e’er could be
or one could tell
of times before revealing
as words
forever carved into
a sacred memory

as morning rings
a virgin light –
around the place I tary
while somewhere else –
a path to lay me down
with evidence
of all that is –
the same as once to wonder
shall breathe as one
so easy
twilight on the dawn

mystery
of wilderness –
secrets to surround me
liars leave no trace
of something less
will e’er I be remembered
as sunlight to the meadow –
where moments of forever
sleep with me
tonight

stained to stone ~

bliss, cherokee, connection, empty graves, faith, fearless, forgiveness, kentucky, life, love, memory of a dream, nature, old maps, passion, restless, spirit, wandering, wisdom

When I am still
I find my way –
into a realm (as truth concedes)
chased as I was letting go
resolved at last
to let me lead.

I don’t know how
was given this –
something more than I can write.
I have not words
or verse to claim –
of shadows cast within the light.

Beyond the yard –
beyond the fence
empty graves are sweat with vine –
markers left
though no one goes –
fallacy of love (divine).

Been this way
a time or two –
no need to wonder what it means.
Was come for something
stayed behind –
is living still
the days between.

Steps away – for nine or ten –
a broken mantle
guards the gate –
lantern burned but I can see
the walls are peeling
(much too late).

How can it be
the past endures –
as thoughts to touch
or breath to feel.
Mountains rise to block the moon –
silence moves
though I am still.

Close enough to trace the barb –
far enough –
and perfume fades
into the memory of a dream.
Would for another
I be laid –

in sheets of yellow
cotton gowns –
hung to dry between the trees.
Fearless light returns the morn –
brings me home
by way of these –
to say your name
without regret –
arms to reach (I take you in).
Roads we wandered yesterday
await the time –
we pass again

into this long forsaken place –
someone said
they knew me well
ageless path beneath the pines –
hides a truth
we never tell.

When turning home
from worlds denied –
huckleberry – stained to stone
where nothing left
(remembers me)
nights I walked these woods alone.

In search of this
remembrance sweet –
proof of love
with each refrain
pressed as petals (tender page)
an empty bed –
forgotten name.
