spring has melted
summer stone
as blossoms white
to grace the ground
crooners sit
the long night perched –
balanced by the moon

silhouette of shadow
against this pink charade
surely this –
our fate to know
one more blessed summer
met as one to count
of hairs
(every day) between

the rising
and the falling down
so glad we have no warning –
of when the bell
shall toll
and time begins

dusted light
before the dawn
yet eyes can see forever
as lovers press allegiance
to the blade

crickets
store their trumpets
and still their tired hands –
while luna slows her heart
against the wood

one more turn
eternal
as rings beneath the bark –
balance me beside the moon
as doves before
the day

colors ~

as soft the wind
the grasses lure
and golden flows the river
swayed against the backs
of skyward glance

such it is
the calm retreat
of thought before emotion
as voice remembered
after words
have gone

in the silence
do you listen
e’er your name be spoken here
or prayed the night
in private –
echoes falling
just as clear

as leaves
restore a blanket
spun to ribbons
for my hair –
will breezes blow
our truth to know
in pieces
everywhere

he couldn’t say ~

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain

with candles ~

let go
and I shall follow
as the shadow to your sun
and lie in sheets
the scent of maple leaf
converted as a lowly soul
found within the waters
and drifted out
as someone more
to sea

hasten as I beg you
do not let these
years be lost –
fated by the path we came
this meaning to forsee
press into
your aching heart
these hands
of solace sweet
and give them rite
to travel
every place
you long to be

given understanding
of another true desire
as passion laid to rest
when none could tell

kiss these burning lips
taste the name
I long to speak –
and share with me
the breath
that was surrendered
on our way

as one I have
remembering –
and nights I couldn’t sleep
for watching to the window
lest you come
standing near the lantern
while the porch
was worn away –
forsaken now the reasons
you were gone

lie upon the floor
these bent and broken boards
that I might be the waking
while you dream
take of me
the everything you swore
you’d never find –
sit the night with words
not written down

breath ~

as calm would wash
a weary world
with winds –
the weight of stone
or tears
the shape of ships
once rescued by the storm

as concious thought
to souls endeared
a place beyond the knowing
of destinies returning us
into the way of one

come to me
in silences
as rain within the rain
crossed beneath a kiss
upon my wrist

marked the two becoming
of need with sure desire
e’er weakness wear a name
I couldn’t say
or hasten me to realms
where dreams become reality
the one to know
as I was come to be

naked as the vine
to raise the angry thorn
bested by each trial
was blossomed here
laid apart by innocence
worn within these veils
as sheets to sweat
the night away –
and verses to forget

gather news of evermore
as marked the road I came
a blush of rose
as memory of my birth

take as I will give you
go as still it goes
within your own
bent to sound
so different now
than e’er was spoken here
would bid me come
into these places known

eternities as written
it would be
before I was
winds would find me waiting
as wonder to reveal

held within your arms
another time
when time was new –
passed along as breath
before the night
already still

and all that I remember
is of you

my only sin ~

of places
that I understand
there’s another
that I don’t –
the world
where you are God
and I – your only sin

the choice of others
chose for us
a story for the telling
turning back the pages
we begin

like as one
and to another –
just the way
we are
you and I the same
so few can see

where we were –
we came from one
into the one
returning
sworn to understand
these mysteries

speak
and I already know
words within my mouth –
for there you are
in verses unforgot

sang of more
and from the depths
one moment stills the others
as different as we were
– tho we
are not

you am I
remembering
another love as this –
promises
and when the time
would be

I would leave
and you would come
forever-night to wander –
waiting in the place
we couldn’t see

I was you
and you
another autumn night –
tempted by the cold
to turn within

revealing now –
a sweet familiar
fluttering of leaves
where I was God –
and you
my only sin

deliberate pause ~

Walking beneath stars at dusk,
doves coo (quietly) to one another,
songs only they (of dove wisdom) can understand…

and I wonder at their (selfless) lament…
What (can they whisper that) I do not know?

What invisible mysteries
do the waves instill — crashing against the cliffs…
(who can tell me)
what secrets the rain confesses to the violet dawn,
is its suffering (made) lesser
by the crimson sunset?
Is there a place (we’ve yet to find)
that waits under evergreen canopies of silence…
atuned to (the cry of) rainbows…
or is that for the poet (alone) to know….

Ten thousand paper birds
(without the heritage to) become feathers…
but still they drfit…tangled not (by expectations)
no tears for tiny fingers
(that pried) their inanimate bones…

they’ve yet to understand
they cannot soar…
and (so) they do…

Can the only secret (worth discovery) be
that a simple morning song…
bellowed atop (a twist of) cooper line
is more (precious) than a symphony of perfectly managed notes…

and that love needs no reason (to be)
(undone by questions — why not)
beyond a moment’s (deliberate) pause…..

traces ~

in the midst
of going crazy –
are words I strain to hear
sometimes I sit the night
and wait the want
to disappear

reminded of the places
still I keep
when day is gone
lest I forget when moments
came for me –
before the dawn

as one I knew
the same as love –
and times for days
the pages read –
when told of ways you walked
and miles to carry

pen and ink
were given life
a refuge from surrender
to shadows dark –
for there your light
was known

reminding me
of certain hope
much more than you
could utter –
whispers of belonging
touched by more
than rule and rhyme

word and still
forget me never
held between the lines –
no matter now
the distance passed –
as spirit folds around

revealing truth
we’ve yet to know –
in wandering to find
the paths we cleared
another day
are never left behind

for in my heart
and here – my soul –
as traces you remain
written by the trust
you swore
to give –

ageless
as were letters
carved into the bark –
are pages sent
to save me
tethered by your heart

musing ~

take of these
my all
my every
thing I was before
no less
than who I was
when once you wrote me
word for word
to pages pressed

echoes breathed
together
easy –
who can say
which came as first
the choice to be
as fate was drawing
lazy circles
in the dirt

back this way
as forward falling –
dare me reach
to catch the truth
what was meant
of passing whispers
sighs were secrets
poets proved

lacey lace
and midnight wonder
round the round –
and tied with string
verses vain
as morning musing
rhyme returned
but not a thing

ages past and yet
another –
one more time
beneath the fall
stillness as a siren
singing –
through the night
one spirit call

get me back
or take me never –
more and more
the same and not –
where was I
when first you found me
lifetimes since
the pen forgot

stories almost read ~

had I one more
grace to give
and not much more
worth keeping –
than roads I’ve come
to bring you love –
kneeling now in prayer

forgotten
every sorrow fell
grief beyond my season –
another dawn
is waiting me
lest I wander there

violet shades
of winter ash –
and canyons lit by longing
days to walk
and warmth we willed
to stay

as colors of the
sweetest songs –
winds the same as ever
shall free the lowly spirit
from the silence
of the grave

stir to voice
these fragile words
and give them place
to matter
save for me the mystery
of stories almost read –

stay the night
another life
that I might find your
wishes –
hanging by a prayer
beside my bed
